...The new series of Ugly Betty started on channel 4 on Friday, this is actually the second part of series two due to the writers strike in America earlier in the year. Ugly Betty is shown on both channel 4 and E4 throughout the week althought the main showing is at 9pm on Fridays on channel 4. Ugly Betty is set in the office of Mode Magazine and follows Betty who was hired as the assistant to the editor Daniel in series one. Betty is not a typical beauty but she has battled against prejudices to be good at her job. ...Being a fan of most soaps and dramas I thought I would give this one a go and was not disappointed a little farfetched but I think that is what makes it so great, they do not take anything too seriously. Ugly Betty is based around the fashion industry and the lives of the employees around publishing Mode Magazine, unfortunately she is far from a model with her braces and her size 12 frame, although she was hired for the pure fact that her boss Daniel would not sleep with her. America Ferrera plays Betty Suarez, Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade, Alan Dale as Bradford Meade, Ashley Jensen as Christina, Becki Newton as Amanda and Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. ...anything and when I feel like I'm about to faint I eat a cube of cheese' ~~Overall Opinion~~ This was a very slick film with lots of stylish outfits which is to be expected from a film about the fashion industry. I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack with tracks from KT Tunstall as previously mentioned as well as Madonna and Alanis Morissette to name a few. I did find the film reminiscent of the TV series Ugly Betty particularly near the beginning, although Andys character was not as kooky as Betty. All the performances were well cast and enjoyable. Streep and Blunt being the highlights for me. The film moved at an even pace and kept me interested from beginning to end. I labelled this a chick flick at the beginning of my review and I would still class it as this. It was funnier than I expected though and may appeal to a male audience... Read review

...Nurse Betty is about a sweet natured young woman, Betty Sizemore, (Renee Zellweger). Betty works as a waitress, stuck in small town Kansas, with a jerk of a husband (Arron Eckhart). Bettys only joy in live is the soap opera “A Reason to Love.” When she witnesses her car salesman husband being scalped and killed by two hitman (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock). She suffers post-traumatic syndrome, this leads to her becoming delusional and believing that she is the ex fiancee of her idol in “A Reason to Love” (Greg Kinnear). Through the delusion and trauma she also believes that the soap is real and sets off across country to find the hospital where he works. ..., both in French and English. So of course, I bought the record (If you don't know what that is… oh, never mind). The record sleeve reproduces the theatrical poster, which has become immediately recognisable for so many. It shows the silhouette of a beach hut at twilight (the background a gradation of orange through to dark blue) and floating over it a picture of Béatrice Dalle, the female lead of the film, in blue. On the back, the tracks are listed, along with the musicians. There are 4 pictures from the movie. The composer, Gabriel Yared already had quite a few movies to his name, mostly French films. He had already worked with Beineix (who did Betty Blue, and also Diva) on 'La lune dans le Caniveau'. ...Bettys of Harrogate is a real institution, it has a wonderful location at the top of Parliament street with beautiful views over the green areas of Harrogate and the lovely Regency architecture of the town. We were there last week and dined 3 times in the place as my wife is a huge fan of the opulence of the shop. At the entrance you are greeted by a mouth watering selection of pastries and fine hand made chocolates as well as a vast array of speciality teas and coffees for purchase to take away. The place is always milling with people and you regularly hear foreign accents at the checkouts and the queues. Bettys can be used for purchasing lovely treats to bring home to your loved ones, for an inpromptu coffee/tea break or a lavish evening meal, the choice is yours! Advantages: The best film of all time bar none.
Disadvantages: It's in French.

...that you would do anything for them. There are two versions of the film...the one you want is the full length Directors version (178 mins) released in 1991, not the shortened one although that's ok. Very hard to get on DVD although there is an Australian version in Pal format (I bought mine on QXL, try eBay also). Beatrice Dalle is fabulous as Betty and Jean Hughes Anglade is outstanding (as he was in La Femme Nikita and Killing Zoe) as Zorg. The supporting cast are both eclectic and superb. Damn, I am running out of adjectives. I could go on about the film for hours but I don't want to take away any of the effect it will undoubtedly have on you so I will just say that it's a very tragic love story (a screwed up Romeo & Juliet) which charts the descent of Betty into madness and the heights of delight and the depths of despair...
