Room with a View in the Highlands of Scotland
Advantages: Fantastic views from room, very relaxing
Disadvantages: Dinning in the hotel was chaotic
...My husband and I spent 2 night at the Caledonian Hotel in Ullapool last week.
Ullapool is a small town in the North West of Scotland, about an hours drive north of Inverness. As one of the main ports for ferrys over to the island this is reason most people come to the area.
The Caledonian Hotel is one of the oldest and largest hotels in the town, with around 85 rooms. Being 8months pregnant I was a bit disappointed when we checked in and found out our room was up 2 flights of stairs, but on opening the bedroom door the climb was well worth it. We had one of the "turret rooms" which was large, spacious, and for the giant bay windows had fantastics views right out over the harbour and the surrounding hills.
Our room had everything we needed - comfy double bed, en suite toilet, bath and shower (with plenty of hot water!) kettle...

Corrieshalloch Gorge
Advantages: Lovely scenery, free
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to, not for the feint hearted
...I love to discover a new place quite by chance and the Corrieshalloch Gorge is an example of such a place. Located on the A835, which is the main road between Ullapool and Inverness in the Scottish Highlands it?s a place that could quite easily be missed as it is hidden from view from the main road. There is a sign just before you reach the falls and when we spotted this last Summer we were ready for a short break from driving so we decided to pay a visit.
About a quarter of a mile along a minor road that runs off the A835 there is a car parking area but even from here it is not obvious what lies in wait. To view the gorge there is rather steep footpath to scramble down which certainly wouldn't be suitable for the disabled or those unsteady on their feet, but for those able to make the short descent it is well worth the effort...

Hebridean Escape
Advantages: Whatever you want to escape from, do it here.
Disadvantages: Peace and big skies (are these disadvantages?)
...The Calmac (Caledonian McBrayne) ferry creeps out of Ullapool into the stormy swell of the Minch and, green already, you wonder what you're letting yourself in for.
Crashing solidly into the Stornoway pier at maybe the third attempt, you peer through the darkening evening and the dreich grey drizzle that only the West of Scotland knows how to produce.
You huddle into your rented cottage, throwing another kindly-provided peat on the open fire, and wonder what on earth possessed you to book a holiday in the Western Isles.
But tomorrow's another day. A day of crystal clear oceans and pristine beaches. Of the whitest sands in the universe and views to the end of the Atlantic. Smells of fresh hay, cut by scythe, draped over derelict fences to dry. Crofts from another age, and standing stones from another age still. The grazing lands...

Paradise Found!
Advantages: Fantastic Unspoilt Scenery
Disadvantages: Difficult To Get There
...track roads with passing places. It can take half a day to travel 30 miles on these roads and although the distance from Inverness is only a hundred miles the civilisation of Inverness seems like a lifetime away.
There are two possible routes to take from Inverness, both equally picturesque so the choice is yours, but I would suggest that you approach by one route and return by the other.
From Inverness on the East Coast or Fort William on the West Coast you can take the A835 North to Ullapool. This route takes you through wild open Moorland and alongside Loch Garve, Loch Glascarnoch and finally Loch Broom, just before you reach Ullapool.
Most people travelling further North on the West Coast will stop off at Ullapool as this is the last of the larger populated towns before the true wilderness of Sutherland. Ullapool itself is...

Midges, DJ?s and toilets
Advantages: Local News, Midge Count, Be a DJ
Disadvantages: not streaming online.....yet
...In The Beginning
LochbroomFM was once Britain?s smallest radio station going on air in 1995 from a small corrugated iron shack. Originally broadcasting to 1,500 listeners in Ullapool, Lochbroom, Achiltibuie and Lochinver as well as the Aultbea and Poolewe area. In 1997 they gained their full time licence, which was the smallest permit that has ever been granted by the radio authority.
The radio station was also the only location north of Scotland able to tune into Virgin Radio. The link with Virgin came about when Virgin Radio managing director David Campbell married in Ullapool and heard the station. He was so impressed he offered his help along with technical advice and support
A ?Wee? Problem
The tiny tin shed (or broom cupboard as it became affectionately know) was perched on the banks of Lochbroom. But the vital...

It's The Fish John West Reject...
Advantages: Tasty, tasty, tasty. Delicious, delicious, delicious.
Disadvantages: Not a lot!
...~ ~ The first time I truly appreciated the humble mackerel as a tasty dish was on a trip to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland when I was a teenager.
I had to spend the night in Ullapool, waiting for the morning ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, and decided to take a short fishing trip on one of the many small vessels that ply for her at the quayside.
Using simple hand lines, we reeled in herring and mackerel literally by the score, and I’m sure that the boat owners made a tidy pile of extra profit from all the fish that were left behind by the amateur anglers!
Anyways, myself and my friend kept back a few for our evening meal, and fried them up in an old frying pan on a wood fire on the beach.
Mackerel is an oily fish, and we simply skinned them and then fried them in their own natural juices. It was a meal fit...

Arguably the most scenic railway line in the UK
Advantages: Impressive scenery
Disadvantages: Cold carriages, weather can be a factor in spoiling views, not many services
...swings to the left away from the main Dingwall-Ullapool road, following the northern edge of Loch Luichart instead. Lochluichart and the next station, Achanalt, are both request stops, so the train often simply slows down at each place rather than stopping entirely. The latter is simply a hamlet with a couple of houses and a lodge alongside the Garve-Achnasheen road. The hills above the Strathbran forest now come into view.
Achnasheen station marks the watershed on the line, from here the track runs south-westwards and down towards Loch Carron and the west coast. Watch out for deer close to the railway line - I saw five really close to the fence (and another inside the fence!) just minutes after leaving Achnasheen. They didn't bolt as much as when encountering cars or walkers - excellent photo opportunities!
Further along, towards...

Planning is half the fun
Advantages: The planning makes sure things run smoothly
Disadvantages: It takes some time and effort - but it's worth it
...was to be Edinburgh, where we would stay for three nights, then on to St Andrews for one night, Loch Ness for two nights, Ullapool for a night and then on to Skye for a full week.
My next job was to sort out some accommodation. We didn’t want to spend a lot as my continued sick leave had meant that I had been reduced to half pay. I was beginning to use the Internet as a source of communication so it was here that I turned for my holiday information.
One of the best sites I found for accommodation is www.smoothhound.co.uk. This gives details of all sorts of accommodation from the most expensive hotels to cheaper self-catering accommodation. It also gives maps, which can be accessed on various scales giving the general area or the specific street.
I found a bed and breakfast in Musselburgh on the outskirts of Edinburgh for our...
