Your life needs a little SPARC
Review of Sun Ultra 5 360 - UltraSPARC IIi 360 MHz by
sjhill
Advantages: Cheap entry level Sun SPARC from 1997
Disadvantages: Build quality is PC like, and low cache processors
...The Sun UltraSPARC 5 workstation was brought out in 1997, and was priced so you could have one on your desk for approx 1000 US Dollars. They stopped shipping to customers in May 2002. These days, it is not a fast machine, but still they are perfectly useable for many workstation and server tasks.
Processor and Memory -
This model has an UltraSPARC IIi processor which is, of course, 64 bit and is clocked at 360 MHz. You can have 1GB of memory in the workstation, installed as up to 4 DIMMS, which must be installed in pairs. "Normal" PC memory will not work in these workstations. The 260MHz model only has 256kB cache (same with the 270MHz processor) For better performance, you need the 2MB cache version on the 333 or 400MHz versions.
Storage -
There is one HDD bay in the machine, although if you remove the floppy drive, you...

Strongly recommended
Review of Structured Computer Organization by Andrew S Tanenbaum by
Deenie
Advantages: No previous knowledge of computing needed, excellent writing style.
Disadvantages: Price
...I am currently doing a Masters in Information Technology and this book was the recommended text for our Computer Network Systems module. Costing £32.99 I was expecting a good book, and as it turned out it is an excellent book and the investment was definately worth it.
This book basically details the different levels that make up a computer, each one performing a specific function. The examples used throughout the book are the Pentium II, Sun Ultrasparc II and the Java Virtual Machine. Even if you are not studying a degree in computing but have a general interest in the way a computer works you will find this an excellent book that will teach you so much more than you would have expected to learn by such an enjoyable read.
It is written in a very easy to read style - unlike many other computing books I have seen so far during my...

The Merchant Of Venice Essay
Review of Everything that starts with V ... by
pumpkin_pie2002
Advantages: comedy for all other characters
Disadvantages: tradgedy for Shylock
...that fuels Shylocks most famous speech.
‘what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath
not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections,
passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons,
subject to the same diseases, healed by the means, warmed
and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is?’
(III-i . 54-59)
Shylock is revealing his true feelings to Salerio and Solanio. This speech shows just how hurt and upset he is. He wants everyone to recognise that he is just the same as any other person. He wants them to see that just because one person is a Jew and another is Christian, they are still both human and should be treated in the same way. The use of rhetorical questions in this speech is getting the audience, and the two characters he is speaking to, to think about what he is saying...

My Top 10 U2 Songs
Review of U2 X-Posed (Interview) - U2 by
shanecahill
Advantages: I picked them, they're good!
Disadvantages: No place for it, should be a place for it
...And Hum
The highest entry from Rattle And Hum on my list (not including the live version of Bullet The Blue Sky) this is another of U2's classic live songs, which became apparent on the Popmart video, where the boys performed a stunning rendition of this. Lively guitar, closely followed by Bono's vocals, forcing anyone who knows the song to shout (join in) "DES-IIII-IIII-IIII-RE". Brilliant, a touch of class.
Lemon
From the album Zooropa
Very un-U2ish (cool, I just made my own word!), yet still up ther with the best of them, Lemon barges in at number 8. From the album Zooropa, which has been compared to what Radiohead did with Kid A, this has lots of electronic noises and beeps and stuff, but what makes this song is the high-pitched vocals from Bono as he warbles "Lemooon... see through in the sunlight" etc. Don't try sing...

Einsteins in the making
Review of Physics by
Saltire
Advantages: Excellent teaching, friendly staff, good course content
Disadvantages: Damned difficult!
...of separate module courses, each examinable (no such thing as exemptions in ‘my day’!). The pass mark is 40%. The final degree mark is based on performance in the final two years but is weighted 66/33 to the final year. With an overall percentage, you can expect the following degrees:-
40%+ - III
50%+ - II(ii)
60%+ - II(I)
70%+ - I
Subjects studied in the first year comprised of approximately 60% Physics, 40% Maths. This came as quite a shock to me (especially with a weakness in Maths!) and I struggled for quite a while before finally getting a grasp on the subject, thanks to help from others. Typical subjects studied in the first year were Instrumentation (how to use lab equipment and take good measurements), Mechanics (think Isaac Newton), Properties of Matter, Optics. Second year studies built on the foundations...

As seen on Bond...
Review of Tarot of the Witches - Stuart Kaplan by
thera_42
Advantages: Clear and easy to see.
Disadvantages: No pictures or help on the Minor Arcana, definitely not a beginner's deck. Some people won't like the artwork.
....
The Major Arcana:
The Major Arcana is made up of 22 cards and in this deck they contain:
0 (unnumbered) The Fool – Portrayed by the typical court jester, here he is blindfolded, throwing away money, and about to walk off a cliff.
I The Magician – Not much to say about this card, it’s a magician.
II The High Priestess – Sat on her thrown with the sun, moon, and stars all represented about her.
III The Empress – Holds the world in her right han
d and a sceptre with the moon at its head in her left.
IIII The Emperor – Holds the world in his left hand and a sceptre with the sun at its head in his right.
V Hierophant – Shown sitting on the world…there’s a bird nesting in his beard ::shrugs:: don’t ask.
VI The Lovers – Seen in a passionate embrace they are entwined by her hair.
VII The Chariot – …small horses, small chariot, large...

Good old fashioned good v everyone else game
Review of Heroes of Might and Magic (PC) by
leg-end
Advantages: easy to get started
Disadvantages: very old game, graphics arent very good
...! Even if you play the same map over and over again, it’s never the same game twice! If you see it lying in a bargain bin, its worth trying out, and it definitely is a bargain! You can also get Heroes I-III in a compendium box set if you wish, but I prefer the old style first game. I can't rate this game highly enough! I will still be playing it in many years to come!
Go on, give it a try! You know you want to!...

'Witch' deck would you choose?
Review of Tarot Cards - Tarot of the Witches by
Jammie_Dodger
Advantages: Beautiful illustrations, easily recognisable.
Disadvantages: Associated with witchcraft and covens, not for beginners.
...man in a blue, red and yellow jesters outfit, looking like he is about to walk off of a cliff. He is being tugged back by what looks like an ocelot, which is holding his pants between his teeth.
I The Magician
A man dressed in blue with a long pointed beard and wizard's hat. He stands in front of a table holding a magic wand in one hand and a crystal ball in the other. On the table is a surprised looking cat sat next to a playing card, the three of hearts.
II The High Priestess
A dark haired maiden dressed in green sitting on a huge wicker chair. She holds a staff in one hand and a mouse by the tail in the other. Sat proudly by her side is a tabby cat.
III The Empress
A beautiful lady dressed in red and gold carrying an orb and sceptre. Her Crown and sceptre are topped with a crescent moon and the orb is a small globe.

Something for any mood..
Review of Top 10 Albums by
polomonsteruk
Advantages: everyone must like something on the list
Disadvantages: only allowed 10 albums
...the album stood for that make it so great, the musical ability of the 4 band members showcased within this album is fantastic, and the combination of these 2 factors easily place this album within my top 10.
>>> Led Zepplin IIII
Need I point out this is the album that contains the truly awesome "Stairway to Heaven", on its own enough to secure this album a place in my top 10. However even discounting stairway for a moment the rest of the album is also fantastic; exprimentary, mind blowing and awe inspiring lyrical and musical properties and of course - the guitar solos!! What else can i say?
>>> Smash - The Offspring
One of the finest albums I've ever had the pleasure of purchasing Smash is easily as good now as it was upon release back in 1994 and is by far the best album the Offspring have ever released. This is what modern...
