Umax Astra 1220P
Advantages: Good resolution, good build quality, good drivers, price
Disadvantages: A little slow
...I bought this scanner for about £90 December 2000.
The scanner is quite a big machine in comparison to others like Canon but at least it's sturdy and well built. The quality of the scans are very good although the scanner is very slow. The parallel interface is partly the problem but the scanner head moves slowly anyway. Fortunately, speed isn't much of an issue here but because of the interface you can't do anything else with the computer while you are scanning.
The software is great! It's very easy to use and has some good features. There is an online scanner manual as well as the paper manual and an online driver manual. The driver is an industry standard TWAIN driver so it can be used in all supported applications.
The scanner features a 1200 x 1200 PPI (optical resolution) scan head which offers single pass 36 bit...

Umax Astra 2000P
Advantages: good price
Disadvantages: persistent failure
...Hi
I used to have a Umax Astra 2000P parallel-port flatbed scanner, but after the third one went wrong, I asked Umax's UK support provider to give me something else, because the darn thing would always go wrong when I most needed to copy a document or scan something.
I don't know if this is the experience of other users, but the parallel port model was nothing but trouble from the start.
The problem was always scanner connection. VSaccess used to suddenly and without warning say the scanner was undetectable and that was it. The last problem occurred during a scan - my machine hung whilst it was scanning happily, but following reboot the scanner was permanently undetectable.
I now have a 2200 instead, which has worked fine (so far), but did need me to go and buy a scsi card....

Super Scanner!
Advantages: Good looks, nice price
Disadvantages: A bit slow
...The UMAX AstraSlim 1200 SE is quite a fashionable scanner, which can be brought on a budget for around £35. I decided to buy one when I found out or suddenly became aware of how useful owning a scanner is. But, as usual, I was on a budget, and gave myself the task of buying a scanner which, is not only inexpensive but also is of good quality . After looking through the catalogues, I stumbled across this scanner. The package looked good and it was relatively cheap for a scanner so I brought it. It was money well spent. The scanner has plenty of functions and it does exactly what I wanted it to do!
Features:
-No power supply needed, connects through USB cable
-Photo-copy option
-Direct Scan option
-Direct e-mail option
-OCR function
-Photo express CD
A little information on the UMAX then:
Speed: 6 out of 10---The scanner...

Actually got a Astra 2000U
Advantages: It scans
Disadvantages: Squeeks a bit
...The UMAX Astra 2000U, comes in a USB format for the easiest of setups.
Software also came with the package with a nice bundle of Adobe applications for great picture editing.
The scanner is of a good quality, desgined well. I wouldn't say it was fast at scanning, but since this is my first scanner, what do I have to compare???
It scans from simple text, to detailed photos. Also offers a preview text so you can see what your scanned image would look like.
All round good scanner from UMAX, and great value for money. This thing helped me in my GCSEs a LOT!...

A very good investment
Advantages: reliable, durable and cheap
Disadvantages: Hand-writing recognition not that great.
...About a year ago I figured I wanted to buy a scanner as it would be handy to have for college work. As I am a student I am on a rather tight budget and finally decided on the UMAX Astraslim SE.
At first I did not expect much from this scanner as it was less than £40 to buy but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to find it was such a good investment.
Along with it's scanning capabilities this piece of hardware also comes with a photocopier (direct image to printer), e-mail function which allows you to avoid the hassle of saving to the hard-drive in the correct format then having to find the file again before you can send it. The scanner also comes with a handwriting recognition option and some limited recognition software. (textbridge and ABBYY)
Other software included with the scanner is the Ulead photo express suite. This...

It's a scanner and it's got a flat bed...
Advantages: Good quality and a transparency adapter
Disadvantages: Poor handling of negatives
...of transparencies or negatives. While I didn?t really expect to print from 35mm at the resolution I was looking at, I had a lot of old negatives that I wanted to catalogue and preview to decide if any were worth getting printed.
Having looked at many specification sheets and read even more reviews I decided to buy a Umax Astra 3450. The basic specification met my requirements and it was available at the right price for my budget.
Specification

USB Interface
600 x 1200 dpi optical resolution
A4 flatbed with 100 x 127mm transparency adapter in the lid
42 bit colour depth/14 bit monochrome (assuming your software supports it, otherwise 24/8 bit)
Size: 460 x 295 x 87.8 (according to the spec. sheet ? this means it is one of the medium size machines rather than the very small breed)
Scan/Copy/Custom buttons allow simple...

For positive - very good, for negative - very bad.
Advantages: Rather compact, excellent price, scanning positive image is very well
Disadvantages: Poor software, problems with USB, scanning of color negatives is bad
...and direct copying on the printer.
Connection of the scanner and installation of the software have not call any difficulties. The scanner works with little noise level, the process of scanning is accompanied by small vibration. The power supply unit in operating time is appreciable heated up.
When work with transparent originals on a plane table to put a special framework. The sizes of area of scanning in this mode allow to place rather large originals, for example slides by a size 9x12 sm. Unfortunately, the absence of special inserts hinders work with a 35-mm film.
In a counterbalance to the software of performance of the hardware Umax Astra 3450 have appeared much better on a comparison with the 2200 model. The scanner shown the excellent output results and good productivity. It is necessary to mark a high exactitude colors and balance...

scan this
Advantages: It scan's
Disadvantages: big and bulky,
...A while ago as part of my pc bundle I bought. I purchased a Umax Astra 5400 scanner. The first thing that struck me when it was delivered was the sheer size of it. I know most flat bed scanners are quite a good size but this one seemed quite a bit bigger measuring 16 ½ inches by 12 ¼ inches. This as you can imagine takes up a goodly proportion of my desk. It was light and dark grey in colour with four buttons on the front. One is to turn off the lamp for saving the power; one is for scanning straight to email, one for scanning to documents and the other is just to scan to file.
When I started to assemble it and connect it to my pc. I found that the connector that connects the electricity supply was a little loose and when I choose to move my scanner a little it often falls out. It may not be that bigger deal to simply plug it back in...

Acquiring Immaculate Images
Advantages: Cheap, good image quality, excellent bundled software
Disadvantages: Short USB cable
...The only previous experience I’ve had with scanners was with my sisters aging Black Widow parallel port scanner which recently went to the great image processor in the sky. As such, she was looking for a new scanner, and at the same time, my dad mentioned his interest in one as well, for some charity work he was doing. As I was the one with the Internet connection, I told them that I would sort them out.
After recent dealings with Scan.co.uk, I decided to give them a go – looking on their web site showed lots of scanners, but one caught my eye – the Umax 3400 USB. It had recently been awarded a PC Format Gold Award, and was in the right price range for both my father, and my sister (around the £55 mark). After clearing the price with them, I ordered two.
After a shockingly short amount of time waiting (i.e. less...

Perfect First Camera for a Child
Advantages: Easy to use
Disadvantages: It's not David Bailey quality
...?What would you like for Christmas Amy?? I asked.
?A camera and a DVD player please.? She answered.
Now, if you have children, you will know that as they get older, their requests get more expensive.
We decided to trawl the internet looking for a good deal on a digital camera; after all, in the long run it will be cheaper. At the age of 8, probably only 2% of all the pictures she takes will be any good, so developing films would be quite expensive, and there was no way I was letting any 8 year old get their hands on my camera!
After searching for a couple of hours, I discovered the Umax Astrapix. I was thrilled to bits to find this camera for £80 including delivery, but I have seen them on Ebuyer for £46.99, which is excellent value.
--{{{First Impressions}}}--
When the camera arrived, we had a look at it. After all, I...
