The UK's '4th coolest boutique hotel'

Advantages: Cental location, friendly service, individualistic
Disadvantages: A little cramped, grubby carpets, a little inflexible on breakfast times

...I travel a lot with work and it's a trifle sad but I have become blasé regarding the same luxury hotel chains-Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc It was nice to stay at a boutique hotel for once-and one right slap bang in the middle of Newcastle city centre. Prestige Events Magazine voted it the 4th coolest boutique hotel in the UK last year. The Lowry in Manchester (I love it) was number 10. It's a cute little hotel with a mere 49 bedrooms. I'm not sure why we stay here rather than one of the hotel chains but I am not complaining! Apparently it used to be a bank. It's also Newcastle's first pet friendly hotel. I travelled with my dear deceased little dog in the past and we both enjoyed dog friendly hotels. First impressions: You could almost miss the hotel, as it's very discreet. And small! As soon as you walk through the door...

Review of Grey Street Hotel, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

great hotel ... deserves a much better rating

Advantages: great prices ... offers always on ... great (well cooked) food
Disadvantages: noisy at new year and christmas i have heard ... (what do you expect)

...i thought this hotel was fantastic in my personal experience ... i travelled from shrewsbury ... up to newcastle to watch the famous newcastle united fc with some family members ... i was rather pleasantly suprised when i found myself at the hotel ... only minutes away from the station ... this was very pleasing ... the hotel was very cheap ... i didn't pay but we got a very good deal ... it worked out to about £13 per person ... per night ... as we only stayed for one night ... the hotel was fantastic quality as the name sugests and deserves much more than 2 star ... i'd personally rate it at 3/4 ... 4 at a push maybe with a slight redecoration and some younger, sexier staff ... :P ... the rooms were very pleasant ... spacious and were basicly furnished with iron ... ironing board ... TV ... Sky via payment ... same...

Excellent Service, Great Food

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...It was my mam?s 50th birthday on August 31st and we wanted to do something special to celebrate. My dad decided to book a table at Azzurri in Newcastle (on the Quayside) as a surprise for my mam and we invited my Nana and my aunties and uncles. There?s too many of us for the whole family (cousins and their children) to all go for a meal together but we ended up with a party of 13. My dad had been here with work previously and he knew that it was nice which is why he chose this as the location. My dad did most of the booking via email or on the phone, but he did call in to leave a £50 deposit. As there was a large party we were given a choice of three set menus at three different prices per person (£20, £25 and £30). This offered a choice of 4 starters, 4 main course and 2 deserts. We all managed to choose something we liked from this...

better than where i was gonna stay

Advantages: cheap,good location
Disadvantages: not many

...****Royal Station Hotel-Newcastle**** Initially my friend and i booked into a Travelodge but we decided very quickly that we needed another hotel and this is the one we ended up staying in. **Location/Getting there** This hotel is located right next to the train station which is fantastic, nothing worse than a long journey followed by having to find a hotel. There is loads of places to eat nearby, plenty to see and do.The bus station is also quite nearby and would take about 10 minutes to walk too. **Reception/staff** The hotel looks really nice from the outside-a grand looking building.Reception looks really nice with big chandlers hanging from the ceiling and there are two lifts.Staff were nice and i had the option of paying straight away or when i checked out. **Hotel/Room** The room i stayed in was a twin room...

Fine Italian Food on the Tyne - Azzuri Restaurant

Advantages: Great food, popular, affordable
Disadvantages: Too noisy and crowded on Saturdays

...distinguishing flavours and although pleasant, they did not find it particularly memorable. My Dad on the other hand ordered a fillet steak. His meal came simply served with a selection of vegetables, one of which was unidentifiable and this led to a highly amusing exchange between my Dad and one of the waiters who was very good-humoured and had us all giggling (it turned out to be a radish - for which the Italian was 'ravanello' - well, you probably had to be there!) Anyway, the steak absolutely huge and simply served, and my Dad said it was one of the best steaks he had ever had - and he has eaten a lot of steaks in his time, including a few in the USA (steak capital of the world). We were all too full to even attempt dessert so I cannot give you any thoughts on that, however the overall quality of the food was high and I saw some elaborate...

Mighty Jokes From Little Acorns Grow

Advantages: No rent increases over the term I rented from them
Disadvantages: Uncommunicative, Poor customer service, Poor record on repairs, Moved office without telling us

...rather than anything else, now I think about it), and service was gradually improving over the last few months of our tenancy. By "improving" I mean they answered the odd phone call, and some of the staff even started to behave like professionals, so you could almost get the impression that they were doing something more than just taking your money each month. Almost. They may have started out as a zero star company, but by the time we moved out, they were more like a half star company (maybe I would have given them a whole star if they had done any of the outstanding repairs in the last four months of our tenancy). But due to ciao ratings, a full star is what I have to give them. Not recommended. Acorn Properties 59 St George's Terrace Jesmond Newcastle upon Tyne Tyne & Wear www.acornproperties.co.uk...

La Tasca? Non, gracias

Advantages: Quick service, good wine
Disadvantages: Bland food, over-priced, no atmosphere, toilets, chain

...that don't require cutlery. So, going to eat tapas at a chain restaurant was going to test me. Would the food be authentic, would the place have any atmosphere and could they make the tapas thing work? LA TASCA, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE The restaurant is situated just behind the Quayside, not quite on the front but it has half a view of the river. Behind it is a multi-storey carpark and next door is the Malmaison Hotel. From the carpark you can enter the restaurant by the back door but there are half a dozen stairs which may cause problems for some customers. You can walk down the path at the side of the restaurant and enter by the front door if this is a problem for any of your party. The Q2, a bright yellow electric bus, runs from the city centre to the restaurant every ten minutes during the day, twenty in the evenings. The bar...

Fill up on tapas

Advantages: Lots of food
Disadvantages: It's a chain

...with or without food are normal city centre prices- around the £2 mark for a glass of wine, and whilst the sangria is £3.15 a glass, I usually find it better value to order a pitcher, which at £11.95 represents much better value! We tend to order a few things from each section, so that we get a bit of everything, although last time we had the set menu. The food comes in small dishes, and when they are served, each dish is explained to you, unless it?s completely self explanatory (like the salad). The dishes always seem quite small, until you start to eat, and then it?s incredible how quickly you are filled. CONTACT DETAILS: Address: 106 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE1 3DX Telephone: 0191 2304006 Fax: 0191 2304007 Website: www.latasca.co.uk. The website is actually quite detailed and you can even book a table online. VERDICT: We quite...

A Village Gem

Advantages: A personal touch goes a long way
Disadvantages: May be too out of the way for some

..., and all of these include a full English breakfast. All children under 2 years stay free of charge when using existing bedding or in a cot. Pets are not permitted. It is not really somewhere you will happen upon, and it is not in a central point for all of the shops and nightlife in the North East, but if you want somewhere secluded and not in an obvious position then this hotel is for you. Review of Ryton Park Country House Hotel, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

A perfect, quiet weekend away

Advantages: Excellent location, service and facilities
Disadvantages: Quite expensive; hardly a thrill-seeker's paradise

...'s legacy is finally being put to rest at long last and you'll be hard-pushed to find someone in Newcastle who's crying about it. Inside the hotel is a wholly different matter; the marble floors of the reception area are elegant and beautifully polished - likewise the dark wood of the fittings. The adjacent lounge is much the same and is a perfect spot for a coffee - or in my case, a beer and two double vodkas - while you wait for your room to be ready. The drinks are expensive here, but that's to be expected - any hotel that sells Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac at £clawyoureyesout.00 per measure is hardly likely to have neon BOGOF signs hanging outside. On the plus side, it's hardly likely to have legions of screeching, staggering chavs clutching bottles of blue WKD either, which is a welcome bonus. The room itself was bright and airy...
