The UK's '4th coolest boutique hotel'
Advantages: Cental location, friendly service, individualistic
Disadvantages: A little cramped, grubby carpets, a little inflexible on breakfast times
...I travel a lot with work and it's a trifle sad but I have become blasé regarding the same luxury hotel chains-Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc
It was nice to stay at a boutique hotel for once-and one right slap bang in the middle of Newcastle city centre. Prestige Events Magazine voted it the 4th coolest boutique hotel in the UK last year. The Lowry in Manchester (I love it) was number 10. It's a cute little hotel with a mere 49 bedrooms. I'm not sure why we stay here rather than one of the hotel chains but I am not complaining! Apparently it used to be a bank. It's also Newcastle's first pet friendly hotel. I travelled with my dear deceased little dog in the past and we both enjoyed dog friendly hotels.
First impressions:
You could almost miss the hotel, as it's very discreet. And small! As soon as you walk through the door...

great hotel ... deserves a much better rating
Advantages: great prices ... offers always on ... great (well cooked) food
Disadvantages: noisy at new year and christmas i have heard ... (what do you expect)
...i thought this hotel was fantastic in my personal experience ...
i travelled from shrewsbury ... up to newcastle to watch the famous newcastle united fc with some family members ...
i was rather pleasantly suprised when i found myself at the hotel ... only minutes away from the station ... this was very pleasing ...
the hotel was very cheap ... i didn't pay but we got a very good deal ... it worked out to about £13 per person ... per night ... as we only stayed for one night ...
the hotel was fantastic quality as the name sugests and deserves much more than 2 star ... i'd personally rate it at 3/4 ... 4 at a push maybe with a slight redecoration and some younger, sexier staff ... :P ...
the rooms were very pleasant ... spacious and were basicly furnished with iron ... ironing board ... TV ... Sky via payment ... same...

better than where i was gonna stay
Advantages: cheap,good location
Disadvantages: not many
...****Royal Station Hotel-Newcastle****
Initially my friend and i booked into a Travelodge but we decided very quickly that we needed another hotel and this is the one we ended up staying in.
**Location/Getting there**
This hotel is located right next to the train station which is fantastic, nothing worse than a long journey followed by having to find a hotel. There is loads of places to eat nearby, plenty to see and do.The bus station is also quite nearby and would take about 10 minutes to walk too.
**Reception/staff**
The hotel looks really nice from the outside-a grand looking building.Reception looks really nice with big chandlers hanging from the ceiling and there are two lifts.Staff were nice and i had the option of paying straight away or when i checked out.
**Hotel/Room**
The room i stayed in was a twin room...

A Village Gem
Advantages: A personal touch goes a long way
Disadvantages: May be too out of the way for some
..., and all of these include a full English breakfast. All children under 2 years stay free of charge when using existing bedding or in a cot. Pets are not permitted.
It is not really somewhere you will happen upon, and it is not in a central point for all of the shops and nightlife in the North East, but if you want somewhere secluded and not in an obvious position then this hotel is for you.

Matfen Hall - What a Gem!!!
Advantages: Food, Rooms, Location, Grandure, Staff, Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Quite Pricy, apart from that i am truly struggling to find any
...What a hotel. I got married here in 2004 and have been returning for our wedding anniversary ever since. Matfen hall is situated in a charming small village in the heart of Northumberland. This magnificent old property was voted 'Britains Best Large Hotel' in the Enjoy England Awards 2006.
So what about the experience, well from the moment you pull up the long drive you are treat like royalty. The staff in this hotel really cannot do enough for you. The are pleasent without being overbearing and are always quick to help should you need it. The conservatory serves wonderfull light bits and lunches where the Library is used for formal dining on an evening with a fantastic choice of food from an A'la Carte menu. Times for dining are best pre-booked because a lot of local people dine here for the food on Friday and Saturday nights so...

A perfect, quiet weekend away
Advantages: Excellent location, service and facilities
Disadvantages: Quite expensive; hardly a thrill-seeker's paradise
...'s legacy is finally being put to rest at long last and you'll be hard-pushed to find someone in Newcastle who's crying about it.
Inside the hotel is a wholly different matter; the marble floors of the reception area are elegant and beautifully polished - likewise the dark wood of the fittings. The adjacent lounge is much the same and is a perfect spot for a coffee - or in my case, a beer and two double vodkas - while you wait for your room to be ready. The drinks are expensive here, but that's to be expected - any hotel that sells Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac at £clawyoureyesout.00 per measure is hardly likely to have neon BOGOF signs hanging outside. On the plus side, it's hardly likely to have legions of screeching, staggering chavs clutching bottles of blue WKD either, which is a welcome bonus.
The room itself was bright and airy...

Brilliant reviews for Boutique hotels
Advantages: Lots of honest reviews on interesting hotels
Disadvantages: Hotels can be quite expensive to stay at
...** Please note that this review is on volume 2, which is not the book in the picture**
Mr and Mrs Smith is essentially a travel guide, but not in the same way the AA is a travel guide. This book only looks at a handful of hotels and they must be 4 or 5 * or boutique hotels.
It is a very stylish book and can be picked up at most book shops for about £20 ? £25. You may think this is quite expensive, but an added benefit is that in every book you receive a Mr and Mrs Smith card. All you have to do is register the card on the website and it allows you to receive free gifts and discounts at the hotels they feature, both in the book and on their website www.mrandmrssmith.com.
The book starts with an introduction from the people at Mr and Mr Smith and explain that is has been going for nearly 5 years now. On the second page is where...

A good hotel in a great location
Advantages: Great location, cheap, new and modern
Disadvantages: No free parking
...'t great during the night when we were trying to sleep, it was probably one of the many hen and stag parties that were staying in the hotel, but as we were also there on a night out we didn't mind too much! For this reason it might not be best for families, but as Newcastle attracts a lot of stag and hen parties you will find them in every hotel.
Our rate didn't include breakfast, we were informed on check in that it was £8.95 each if we wanted it.
I would definately stay here again, especially if the prices are low again (though this was probably due to it being the weekend after new year and it was freezing!). If staying here I would ask for a room facing the courtyard and ask for one on a floor that isn't occupied by groups (unless you are also having a big night out too!)....

Queens Hotel, Queens Staith, York, UK
Advantages: City cenre, riiverside location. Close to ameneties and attractions
Disadvantages: Potentially noisy nightlife just across the river
...My wife and I stayed at the Queens Hotel on a Saturday night, in mid-May.
The hotel is quite modern, having been converted from an old warehouse in recent years, and is only 4 storeys high. It is right in the heart of the city centre, within the city walls, and is on the riverside overlooking the River Ouse. It stands directly opposite the Kings Arms pub, which is famous for getting flooded after prolonged periods of heavy rain. The Queens Hotel stands on Queens Staith, however because it has been fairly recently converted is designed not to be adversely affected by high water. As it is in the city centre there are loads of pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants, as well as 2 theatres, 2 cinemas, various museums, including the Jorvik Centre as well as the Minster etc. all within a few minutes stroll.
I know my way around York quite...

Hotel International
Advantages: Location, breakfasts
Disadvantages: Poor rooms
...I recently went on a cultural girlie trip with a friend to Paris. I was left to do all the booking. I was looking for a reasonable hotel, near a metro stop, which included breakfast. I came across the Hotel International on various travel sites and it seemed fairly highly rated so I booked us in for three nights.
LOCATION:
The hotel is located 6 Rue Auguste Barbier in the 11th Arrondissement. The nearest Metro stop is Garcourt which was a two minute walk away and it was a five minute walk to Republique which gives good links to other lines. It's not really central enough to avoid the Metro and walk to the attractions but it was located so close to a stop that it seemed ideal.
PRICE:
Prices vary depending on size of room and season. There are singles, doubles and triples available. We paid Euro254 for the whole time...
