Faculty of Informatics - Jordanstown
Review of Ulster University by marco

Advantages: Constantly updated course with good facilities
Disadvantages: Could be more options available on the Computing Science course

...The best University in Northern Ireland if not the whole of the UK for studing Computing Science. The course is reviewed all the time and input from the students is taken on board. Changes in the course do reflect the needs of industry and this is a good thing. The technologies and hardware available is the best the that I have seen and heard of. I would recommend that if you wish to take on an undergraduate Computer course you check out the University of Ulster. Computing courses are offered in Magee, Coleraine and Jordanstown.... UMIST - not to be forgotten
Review of University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) by jonyee

Advantages: Good quality
Disadvantages: Not well know

...They very fact that this university is not featured in the list of univerisities on this site is a reflection on the attitude of people in general regarding this university. There seems to be a poor recognition of this university, despite it is one of the oldest and arguablely the best university in the North West area. The courses are mainly sciences and management. It comes joint top in management with the likes of the London School of Economics and other top universities. It is the top univerisity in the North West and is one of the first places to stop if you want to be in a large city and have a great education.... Read review

Small but great.
Review of Aston University by JimmyMuffin

Advantages: Small and friendly.
Disadvantages: No arts subjects.

...Aston University is in the centre of Birmingham. It used to be a science and technology college but changed into a university in the 1960s. Aston does not offer any arts or humanities based courses but specialises in science, business and languages. The Aston University campus is very little but that means that everything is very close together. It is a friendly university and has a great reputation. As a student you are encouraged to do a sandwich course, thereby increasing your employment after university chances by about 400%. Because Aston do not teach arts subjects or philosophy courses etc, most of the Aston students do go into business which is how the employment rate of graduates is so high when compared with other Unis. I would recommend Aston to anyone. Facilities and resources are excellent. So is the teaching.... Read review

Why I found Abertay to be an average university.
Review of Abertay University by georgie

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...After leaving secondary school, I enrolled straight away with the University of Abertay. My first impressions were not good. I found that there was not enough support, particularly for new students, and that there were many bad lecturers. There were many students who were finding the maths course very difficult, however where not given the help they required. The best department in the University of Abertay is the computing one. It is wildly acknowledged that they have some of the best facilities, more computers than most universities, and wider choice of courses in that area. However if your course is not computer related then I would not recommend this university. The student union is a mess, it is very rarely full, and on the plus side, Dundee has a lot of pubs and clubs to choose from. Overall, Dundee is a nice place... Read review

Very Nice Facilities, very good library. very expensive
Review of Warwick University by Gemimathecat

Advantages: Excellent buildings, library, teaching staff
Disadvantages: Location, enclosed campus environment, local resentment of students

...Warwick university has a very nice campus, and one of the best university libraries I have seen; however its location halfway between Coventry and Leamington Spa means that students living off campus have to travel a lot. Only come here for the courses, the facilities and the teaching not for the nightlife, it is quite apparent that the locals in Coventry are very resentful of students and burglary rate is high. Apart from all that Warwick University does have a very good art centre and language learning facilities which are also available to the public, perhaps over commercialised as a university?... Modern and Useful
Review of Salford University by MichelleC

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...I graduated from salford University in 1996 after completing a four year course in Modern Languages (French and Spanish). I chose salford University as the course was a very modern course - unlike the tradtional courses of places such as Oxbridge where literature is the main basis of many parts of the course. During my time at Salford, I learned much about translation and interpretation and also spent a year abroad. The first six months I spent in Granada, Spain, as an au pair and then the University found me a job as a secretary in France for my second stint. I would truly recommend Salford if you want to go somewhere with a modern and practical outlook to courses.... Read review

An Independent University
Review of Buckingham University by karlb

Advantages: small groups; individual attention; international student body
Disadvantages: no night life; tuition fees

...Buckingham is the only chartered independent university in the UK and as such is quite different from all other UK universities. 1) It receives no state funding 2) All students pay the same tuition fees, unlike other UK universities where overseas students subsidise UK students 3) It is small, only 650 students 4) Students receive personal attention; groups of 8 to 10 students are the norm 5) BA/BSc/LLB courses are completed in TWO years, because there is no long summer vacation There are disadvantages. Buckingham is a small town, and despite its proximity to Oxford and Milton Keynes, there is little or no nightlife. Also, the tuition fee of approximately £8000 pa is expensive in comparison with state universities. The university is suited to the mature student who is not interested in clubbing and who is keen to mix with a multinational... Read review

Good Career Opertunities
Review of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen by stocher

Advantages: Placement Year
Disadvantages:

...I chose The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen because of its reputation of having close links with Industry. It has a very wide range of Courses, many of which are "Sandwich" courses. These Sandwich Courses include a year working for a company in your chosen Industry. I am studying for a BSc(Hons) in Computer Science and I'm currently approaching the end of my Placement year. The University's close links with Indsutry, and the experience that is gained by undergraduates on their placement year, stands them in very good stead for gaining employment after graduation. As well as providing a very high level of academic teaching, the university prides itself on it's practical (hands on) approach to learning. I feel that Robert Gordons University is well worth consideration by people looking for a well rounded approach to teaching... Read review

Current students opinion
Review of Portsmouth University by mlinsell

Advantages: Good social life
Disadvantages: bad reputation

...The university of portsmouth, a former polytechnic. That is most peoples view on the university. But it is no longer a polytechnic, and is rapidly becoming one of the top universities. Don't be put off by some peoples negative comments about the university, the atmosphere amongst portsmouth students is great! Everyone comes together as one, and if it wasn't for such a poor students union, the social life in portsmouth would be second to none. It is very wise to pick your course very carefully, as there are some courses which hand out degrees just for turning up to the occassional lecture, but the majority of courses will work you very hard and make you work for your degree. My only bit of advice would be to come and visit, and make your own decision!... Read review

T102 - technology is FUN!
Review of Technology by djhendra

Advantages: Excellent breadth - fascinating summer school
Disadvantages: Can't think of any at all

...T102 is the Open University's foundation level (Level 1) technology course: Living With Technology. It is by far the broadest course I have taken with the Open University - it covers Design, Heat, Electricity, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry and a host of other disciplines. Obviously this means that no one subject is covered in great depth, but it does give you a brilliant 'taster' of each topic and can help you decide which courses might interest you next. The summer school was superb! Imagine cramming all the lab and field work you would do in a year at a conventional university into one action-packed week! Brilliant! Anyone who doesn't enjoy the T102 summer school needs a checkup from the neckup. Well done, Open University! A superb course. Don't just read this - register!... Read review
