Coventry university. Sent there, loving it
Review of Coventry University by  gavinos

Advantages: So many
Disadvantages: Lack of sleep

...When you think of Coventry university, you probably think of crap nightlife, "that hole in the midlands" and other demeaning terms. Well, thats what i used to think!!! but after a severe lack of effort and thus an obvious underachievement in my a-level results, i only just got in, but still....i was in....and the story unfolds. It seems that the rumours and ideas about Coventry are entirely unfounded, and more to the point un-true. Well this is my opinion, but i feel i speak for most of my fellow students and friends. We have a briliant time in our halls of 100, we go out at least 4 times a week, and dont really sleep that much!! We already realise that these are the best times of our lives and, although i hear that most people in most universities have similar opinions, i wouldn't rather be anywhere else! so if your thinking... Coventry - depends what for
Review of Coventry University by  isaac43

Advantages: Some subjects the best in the country
Disadvantages: Its not a picturesque place to be

...As with all Universities it really depends what it is you are looking at studying when you get there. I know league tables etc give some impressions but reading real reviews may also help. It is worth noting the only bad review of Coventry so far cannot actually be bothered to check what is written so probably reflects something of the general attitude of the reviewer. Coventry is not chic or stylish - its set in the centre of the city and you accept it on that basis. The advantages are accessible transport systems, lots of pubs/clubs in stumbling distance and the advantage of being able to get out to the shops between lectures. Some accomodation is excellent with full meals service if required and other accomodation is less good it depends on what you want to pay for. There are lots of sports and leisure opportunities... University - waste of time???
Review of Coventry University by  smudgeybabes

Advantages: Good reputation. Central for most of the UK, good road & rail links.
Disadvantages: Hard work? - wait 'til you get to the real world!

...I write this review as a parent of a student, who has been at this university for three years. During this time, I have visited Coventry many times, both to the university, and the city itself. I have gone in shops, museums, parks, fast food outlets, bars, libraries, and many more places. I have spent a long time in traffic, on the ring road, in & out of car parks, and all over the local area. I now feel qualified to comment. I have made up my own list of Specific Criteria, nothing wrong with the one below, just different. Location - Very good, near city centre, inside ring road. The shops, bars, fast food, buses, are just right. I believe that the location is very important, it has to be near enough to get home at night for one thing. There are a lot of large heavy pieces of course material to be transported, and most students don... Read review

Welcome to- umm- well, Coventry actually.
Review of Coventry University by  dogscoff

Advantages: Well equipped, organised and funded Uni in a great City
Disadvantages: You could proabaly find a more prestigious degree

...Coventry University is quite a large and well organised university, with something in the region of 15,000 students. A great many of these are from abroad, which generates a sizeable proportion of the uni's income. Student services at Cov are excellent - All first year students are guaranteed accomodation, be it in one of the many Halls of residence (some on campus, others further away) or in the university managed but privately owned houses. THese are of a varying standard - the freshers often get the scruffier places, especially if you apply late, but if you start looking early enough in the year you'll find some nice houses available, and once you're in one you have first refusal on it the following year. Rent is reasonable and since the places are managed by the uni you don't have to worry about disputes with the landlord... Read review

Sending people to Coventry
Review of Coventry in General by  kieransmum

Advantages: Plenty to do and see
Disadvantages: Lots and Lots of concrete

...I don't know about being sent to Coventry, I'd go there quite happily of my own accord. I was born there and lived there until i left to go to university some 19 years later. Ok so when people think of Coventry they usually think yeah ok they've got 2 cathedrals, but else do most people know about the town, not alot. However there is plenty of things of note. Ok forget the boring historical nonsense, yes we were bombed by the germans, and yes we have a proud history in car manufacture, but is that really going make people want to come i don't think so. So what is there to do or see in Coventry. In recent years Coventry has been trying to shed the image of a nasty concrete post war town, pity about the ring road which really is a case of taking your life into your hands whenever you have to use it. We had the first pedestrian... Read review

Coventry - inner beauty
Review of Coventry in General by  dogscoff

Advantages: Shopping, pubs, nice atmos.
Disadvantages: Too much concrete, not much choice for eating.

...University brings a hell of a lot of students from all over the world. In fact, the university accounts for about 5% of the town's population. With Warwick uni just down the road, Coventry is a real student town, so if you don't like students, you'd better go somewhere else. . Where you find students, you inevitably find two things - traffic cones defiling statues and cheap drinking. Prices of less than a pound-fifty a pint is not uncommon if you know where to look, and the town is literally reeling with cheap street corner off-licences. Finding cheap drink, then, is not hard. Finding cheap drink in a decent pub is not so easy. Most of the decent pubs in Cov have succumbed to the myth that students are more likely to spend money in a pub if all the walls are painted in prime colours. The Courtyard is often avoided now for prostituting itself... Read review

Need somewhere to stay in Coventry
Review of Coventry in General by  sue.51

Advantages: Branded and standard service
Disadvantages: Their best prices are well hidden

...activity close by, save for a few other hotels, hence you would have to drive or get a taxi to see any real life. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION The Britannia Hotel, Coventry (previously the De-Vere) is situated on the edge of the city centre, approximately 2 minutes walk away from the Old and New Cathedrals, and literally a stones throw away from the Main Bus Station. Pubs, Club and restaurants abound are a short walking distance away from the hotel. It is adjacent to Coventry University (might be worth avoiding during Freshers Week), ideally placed for a good night out in this ever developing and improving city. ENTRANCE Reception in common with the other Britannia Hotels, is a rather grand marble style affair, more reminscent of what you would expect in an upmarket overseas hotel. Check-in was slow despite... Read review

Coventry :Work-a-day City
Review of Coventry in General by  ashford

Advantages: Modern. Excellent road and rail links. Good universities
Disadvantages: Lacking in character.

...Coventry,in the west Midlands,is one of England's great centres of engineering housing tractor manufacturers, aero engine companies, armoured vehicle manufacturers and this industrial city is home to the famous "green cats",Jaguar cars. Although actually a historic city Coventry now appears as a modern rather work-a-day city bent on earning its living. It was heavily bombed during world war II and much of the city was rebuilt during the early post war years. Pride of place in Lady Godiva's home city has to be accorded the splendid Cathedral which is a phoenix rising from the ashes. The Belgrade Theatre is another modern building of quality and the University of Coventry in Priory Street is also attractive. On the outskirts of the city is the well respected and highly rated University of Warwick which some observers refer to as "The MIT... Read review

Guide to choosing University accommodation
Review of Member Advice on Applying for University Accommodation by  stuartcorey

Advantages: Guides both prospective and returning students on what factors to consider in choosing both on and off- campus accommodation
Disadvantages: Not relevant to all unis, but is to most

...It is difficult to write this opinion from a general perspective, as choosing and applying for accommodation varies so greatly between universities. I am about to start my 4th and final year at Warwick University, where I have lived both on and off campus. Based on my experiences, I shall try to give prospective and returning university students some kind of general idea of what to look out for when selecting accommodation. For some students the main factor involved in their choice of accommodation will inevitably be the cost. On one hand, cost may not be an object, especially if your parents are funding you, but there are still certain factors I would advise you to take into account. These factors will apply to all other students for whom the most expensive residences may be ruled out. Warwick has a great choice of on... Read review

City University, expensive and exhausting.
Review of City University London by  chris_ray

Advantages: good rep, ..... ?
Disadvantages: Expensive, poor facilities, lack of student support, student union,

...I looked at a few Universities, Greenwich, Coventry, Birmingham and City University. Initially I worked out the costs of all the Universities and City/ or Greenwich was the cheapest of them. I'd live at home, commute, and work weekends. 1st problem is that commuting doesn't take the average hour that it used to, especially in the morning, I have commuted befotre at this time but obviously not continuiously throughout the week, boy was I in for a shock. 2 hours each way, if your lucky from Southend to Islington, costs are now £87.50 per week, which rose from £69 per week, which I hadn't realised could happen. The next is that I visited other Uni's to see what factilities they had and if they were helpful, City came outright the top, next was Greenwich and the others followed. I would have to say I was pleasantly surprised... Read review
