Review of Leeds University by  kazzle

Advantages: Excellent Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Too many students and not enough facilities

...As a current second year student at Leeds University i thought i would share my opinions and experiences of this university with you. Leeds is now the most popular choice for undergraduates and has the largest number of undergraduate applications in the UK. With over 23,000 undergraduates alone, Leeds is an excellent place to study. When deciding on which university to attend I had certain things I was looking for and so I thought I’d write this opinion based on these areas. ACCOMODATION Leeds university has a wide range of halls of residence including catered and self catered. I stayed in self catered accommodation for my first year in Devonshire Flats which is part of Devonshire Hall. The flats are very modern and clean and each flat has 6 private bedrooms and a kitchen and bathroom (some are en-suite). They are located... Read review

GO Leeds
Review of Leeds University by  chachaqueen

Advantages: Reputation, quality of facilities, sports and nightlife
Disadvantages: Expensive accommodation

...I have been a student at Leeds University for 5 years now, and have experienced it both as an undergraduate and as a postgraduate student. So, I should have a good feel for the place by now!! I took my degree in Geophysics in the Earth Sciences Department, and then stayed on to do a PhD working on volcanic earthquakes. Leeds University is one of the old red brick Universities, which received investment from the local textile industry to help it expand in the early years. Leeds University has an excellent reputation and over 6000 students graduate from the university every year. The Chancellor of the university is Melvin Bragg, and I was lucky to have him presiding over my graduation ceremony (the photo is on the mantle piece!). FACILITIES: Libraries: There are 3 main libraries on the main campus, the science library... Read review

The Wendy House, Leeds University Union
Review of The Wendy House, Leeds University by  JeeanA

Advantages: Great mix of people, music and cheap drinks
Disadvantages: Disadvantages? What are they then???

...going along I'd thoroughly recommend it! Check out the website first at www.thewendyhouse.org. This also has a photo gallery, a monthly competition to win tickets, a map for how to get there, lovely colourful fliers featuring various characters from cartoons/ kids tv programmes and if all this isn't enough, there's some games on there too! Getting there is reasonably easy. I can't say what buses go that way as I don't know, but if you go by the map you can walk from Leeds city centre (if you don't mind and your shoes aren't too tight!) or by taxi, which is about the easiest mode of transport. The website also includes a useful link to local B&Bs if you want somewhere to stay and don't have mates with crash space in Leeds. I would thoroughly reccommend trying this venue at least once on a Wendy House night. There's a brilliant party... Read review

The Leeds side streets that you slip down...
Review of Leeds University by  MagicKitten

Advantages: Excellent university, everyting you'll ever need!!
Disadvantages: Obviously any big city has a high crime rate, so be careful!!! Also, the large campus can be off-putting at first.

...Okay, I'm here now and I should expand on my enthusiastic but extremely vague opinion!!! The University of Leeds is one of the biggest and most popular in the country, with lots of students!! (I don't know the exact number but I know the total number of students in the city, from the University and the Metropolitan University, and other smaller higher education colleges goes well into the tens of thousands, so that's a lot of students!!), and after only a few weeks here (I'm coming up to the end of week 7, so including freshers' week that makes it nearly 8 weeks) I can see why. Academically, the University has a lot going for it. I'm studying history, so from an Arts perspective there are two big main libraries, with what seems like squillions of books, so it's certainly well-equipped, the tutors and lecturers are all extremely... Why, why must Refectory be Leeds' biggest venue?!
Review of The Refectory (Leeds University) by  tomhughes

Advantages: Attracts relatively big-name bands, convenient location
Disadvantages: Terrible venue, no air-con, poor facilities, ill equipped.

...INTRODUCTION - I've been a fan of live rock music for some years now but living in Leeds have nearly always been forced to travel to Manchester to see bigger name bands simply because of the lack of a venue big enough to attract them. Now Leeds has some brilliant venues, like the Cockpit, Joseph's Well and the Met but none of these reach a capacity of over 1000 which is essential for larger bands really. Then all of a sudden, there was a new player on the scene. Part of the Leeds University campus, The Refectory offered capacity of over 1000 with big names to match. Had my prayers been answered?! BANDS - So far I have seen the brilliant Feeder, the sublime Placebo, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger and Less Than Jake at the Refectory. Were it not for these superb bands having played there it would probably get 1 star. Coming soon... Read review

Long Live Leeds
Review of Leeds University by  angelwds

Advantages: A fantastic, fun place to be
Disadvantages: You have to leave when you finish your course!

...While browsing through Ciao, I noticed that no one had given their opinion on the University of Leeds for a while so I thought I would share mine with you. I began my study at Leeds in October 1990 (yes, that long ago!) but I'm sure it hasn't changed much and I would imagine it's only changed for the better. When we arrived (I was lucky enough to have a friend from school on the same course) we quickly found our accomodation began to get acclimatised after being welcomed and given lots of information on what lay ahead for us. Although I was initially in a university flat (didn't get on with room mate) we both ended up at Bodington Hall approx. 4 miles from the University in Lawnswood. It may seem a long way but this was not a problem as there are buses which come into the Hall grounds and take you right to the Uni. I thought... Read review

Leeds United?
Review of Leeds University by  REG

Advantages: lively place to be
Disadvantages: long way from home for some

...My daughter is currently at Leeds University. It always has had a good reputation and it is didappointing to see them down the scale in the Times newspaper annual listing. However, I cannot bellieve they will sit on their laurels and will do what is needed to regain their place in the top ten. What I do have to say about Leeds is the impression I get from her and it has nothing to do with the academic side. If you are a student and want good companionship, Reasonable accommodation, stacks of things to do both inside and out of university, during the day and night, this must be one of your hot favourites. Leeds has a feelgood factor and it is a surprisingly friendly place and quite cosmopolitan. I do not think any student would be disappointed there and its also bearable for parents.... Read review

Leeds Met - Good Crack
Review of Leeds Metropolitan University by  BIGSHOWS

Advantages: Good nightlife and cheap cost of living
Disadvantages: Beer is not subsidised - disgraceful

...Leeds Met is a former polytechnic university with a good reputation for business and also sport. The sporting facilities are amongst the best in the country and aside from that there are some very reasonably priced and well equipped gyms near the city centre as well. There are a number of good nightclubs around offering some good deals such as Planet Earth on a Wednesday night. There is also an excellent shopping centre with all major chain stores in attendance and a good selection of restaurants as well including Maxi's, a well-known chinese restaurant. Also a fantastic restaurant is contained within Napoleon's Casino and Restaurant, with free breakfast on thursday nights.... Read review

Loving Leeds Life
Review of Leeds in general by  VerySpecialOne

Advantages: Great shops, restaurants, bars, friendly people
Disadvantages: None

...As a students of the University of Leeds for the last three years, I feel I am more than qualified to give you a good insight into the Leeds experience. Leeds is a great city with many exciting things to do. Situated in the county of Yorkshire, Leeds is regarded as one of the major and most glamourous cities in the UK. Firstly, the people in Leeds are so friendly. There is a really nice atmosphere when you walk round Leeds city centre and this is a definite plus. Also with the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University - the city is very student friendly. Most students I know have had a fantastic university experience in Leeds. SHOPPING. Leeds has great shopping, situated in a fairly compact shopping centre. *Harvey Nichols With doormen in hats to open the door for you and with a great range of designer goodies... Read review
