Study in Edinburgh
Review of Edinburgh University by  cutesally

Advantages: Good place to Study
Disadvantages: High cost of living

...The University of Edinburgh which was founded in 1583, has a student population of around 21,000 and employs around 6,000 members of staff (academic, clerical, technical and manual) with a turn over in excess of £315 million. The University operates on a number of sites with the main location in the city centre. The University of Edinburgh is one of the largest unitary non-collegiate universities in Britain, covering a wide range of Academic disciplines as any Brittish university. The University's strategy is research-led, attracting a substantial volume of external funding. Equarl importance is attached to hight quality teaching within this environment, and the University is actively engages in expanding its recruitment of students from overseas and in widening participation by students from all backgrounds within the UK... An A-Z Guide to Edinburgh
Review of Edinburgh (Scotland) by  Crazy-Christian

Advantages: It's beautiful. It has a castle! It's very centralised
Disadvantages: The weather (occasionally) and can be expensive

..., as it is very atmospheric but it is not to everyone’s taste. Kids may well be bored. It is something I think everyone should try at least once! See: http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/ U is for UNIVERSITY Yes, Edinburgh is not just for tourists - some people come here to have FUN! It has a very good reputation and was competing with St. Andrews for Prince William’s attendance. I have a couple of friends currently attending and they say it is very good. What more recommendation do you need! They also have plenty of part-time courses open to non-students; a colleague recently did a Film Criticism course which he thoroughly enjoyed. (And of course I went to Edinburgh University - but they turned me away as they already had someone to clean out the toilets!) Ahem, see: http://www.ed.ac.uk/ V is for VAULTS These are a set... Edinburgh at it's most vocal
Review of Edinburgh Evening News by  littlem

Advantages: local news and adverts, what's on section, widely available ... in edinburgh
Disadvantages: parochial, poor writing quality, sensationalist

...headline was referring to a small story on the advice the Edinburgh University Student’s Association was giving new students about staying safe. I do a lot of head shaking when reading the News. What will I read about? The Edinburgh Evening News will run stories that almost no other capital daily newspaper would. This is a reflection of the safety and general niceness of the City. Rarely is the front page taken up with tales of actual violence (only perceived threats) and the bulk of the news is taken from minor research findings. Page 2 is usually reserved for an international story (and the weather) but you will only get the bare bones of this, no matter how serious. As you read on you will find small 200-500 word articles on a variety of local subjects. Yesterday, one woman had received a £2,000 bill for unpaid Poll Tax... Read review

Heriot Watt University
Review of Herriot Watt University by  craigwstewart

Advantages: Excellent campus with superb facilities
Disadvantages: Nothing major

...It has been a little while since I posted a review and that is because I have just started university. I am currently in my first year at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh studying Mechanical Engineering. This review is based on my experience of the university. While at university I am staying on campus and therefore will be able to comment on the university, its facilities, the course I am doing and the accommodation. Heriot Watt University has two campuses in Scotland. This review is only based on the main campus which is in Edinburgh. Heriot Watt is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. It was established by Royal Charter in 1966, but its origins date back to 1821 through the School of Arts of Edinburgh. The name Heriot-Watt, commemorates George Heriot and James Watt. George Heriot was a renowned 16th... Read review

Edinburgh City of Dreams.
Review of Getting around in Edinburgh by  elinor.z

Advantages: To Experience the Ancient & Modern beauty of this wonderful city.
Disadvantages: Only if you are disabled or in a wheelchair.

...to bed. I crept even more quietly back up again. Slipped into my bunk among snoring, whispering and other strange sounds, and fell asleep again, but not so quickly. This time I noticed how uncomfortable the bunk was. I hadn't been asleep long when I was once again awoken, this time to the rhythmic rocking of the bunk, not quite sure in my sleepy state what was happening, but soon realising that the movement was coming from the upper bunk. After a few seconds of this I once again arose to make a cup of tea and retire to the lounge and settle in peace and quiet on the sofa. Me? old fashioned?, Not really, just tired. When I did finally awake I had a quick shower and retreated to the streets for breakfast. This was welcome and I started my plan to find the exact location of the University of Edinburgh. Everyone was most helpful... Read review

Edinburgh's Hideous Hidden City
Review of Hidden Underground Vaults Tour, Edinburgh by  sandrabarber

Advantages: Fascinating
Disadvantages: A little claustrophobic

...valley of the city. The Edinburgh sewer is also the Edinburgh drinking water. People are riddled with disease in the vaults and infant mortality is about forty per cent. The average lifespan is 32 years. Later, as sanitation and social awareness increases, people move out of the vaults. They are then taken over for other purposes - illegal stills and drinking dens, for one. It is thought that the vaults also served as storage for the corpses taken by the bodysnatchers, later to be sold to the university for experimentation. It is also rumoured that the infamous 'Monday Club', a bunch of decadent aristocratic young men, meet there and practise devil worship and sacrifice. Homeless people still seek refuge there, until at last one day the vaults are closed off, bolted, and left to rot. It is hard to believe today... Read review

Deconstructing Edinburgh
Review of Edinburgh (Scotland) by  DJWally

Advantages: Cosmopolitan atmosphere, loads of culture, loads of pubs.
Disadvantages: Not a lot of big live music venues, Prince's Street's layout can be annoying if you're in a hurry.

...This is a shoo-in, right? I mean I've been living here for almost six years, I should be able to write a fairly decent opinion on this town. But sitting down, writing this, whilst plans are in motion for me to leave this fair city (work hassles), I'm not really sure where to begin. Edinburgh is a beautiful city, so much so that if you're a resident you kinda take it for granted. Edinburgh is a city of layers, one that, as it's expanded, has carefully preserved the past alongside the present. The town itself boasts three universities, and several art galleries and theatres. This helps create a fairly cosmopolitan atmosphere, with people from all over the world coming not just to visit, but to study, and sometimes to live. Of course, during August's fringe festival, the population of the town seems to double, with performers... Read review

napier is a good modern university
Review of Napier University, Edinburgh by  napier08

Advantages: employability after your degree, the location, the facilities, student accommodation location, the friendly staff,
Disadvantages: lack of clubs other than sport, not a well known uni,

...I am currently a Napier student, i'm in my 2nd year of my honours degree. I am doing festival and events managment. I'm based at Craiglockhart campus. It is a really good business school. It is a good size of building so it is easy to find the room you are meant to be in. I have friends from loads of different countries. The tutors are very friendly and are easy to contact if you need any help. Good facilities including a brand new gym. The student accommodation provided for first years is good because it makes it easier to make new friends and you never feel lonely. Also it is in a great location in the city centre of Edinburgh. Making it easy to get a bus to uni or stumble home from the pub. The bad things about the accommodation if i'm being honest is that we did have a problem with mice, although the accommodation... Leading in Scotland
Review of Edinburgh University by  jmcmeekin

Advantages: Location location location
Disadvantages: Maths!

...Edinburgh University is currently ranked top in Scotland league tables, with over 20,000 students this is no easy task. The university is not only appealing on its diverse range of subject options open to student, but the location is arguably one of the best in the UK. A typical year in Edinburgh will see the world famous Fringe festival, the world famous Hogmanay, a diverse range of bands playing in both small and large venues such as the corn exchange, or my personal favourite Whistle Binkies - where they have live music most nights and open mic nights on Monday and Tuesdays – they also serve a mean pint of Guinness, a rarity in Scotland. If Edinburgh doesn’t hold all the live music necessary then a quick train journey down to Glasgow will easily satisfy that need for live music – recently staring there were Muse, supported... It sends shivers down my spine!!!!!
Review of Queen Margaret University College (Edinburgh) by  Kink2000

Advantages: Great course, good nightlife
Disadvantages: Edinburgh's so cold

...Edinburgh, its a great city, got 3 universitys, so it can't be that bad can it? They were my thoughts when i switched courses from London Kings College to Queen Margaret University College Edinburgh. The reason for me moving courses was that the living costs were far too high, and the additional support given in my loan and bursary (I'm studying a healthcare career) wasn't enough. I was paying between £100-150 in rent PER WEEK. If a normal person can't afford it how am i supposed to afford it. I am studying to be a dietitian which means i have signed upto a 4 year Bsc (Hons) degree in dietetics. I am now in my 2nd year after spending a forgetful (hopefully) 12 months in London. The courses are exactly the same which is good because neither me or my new friends are at any advantage. Whilst London was a University spread all over... Read review
