University of Glasgow you know you want to!
Review of Glasgow University by
The_Honest_Truth2006
Advantages: Great city, great people, great choice of courses, high quality teaching
Disadvantages: moving around classes can be a trek depending on your course(s)
...Having studied at the University of Glasgow for 5 years I can honestly say you are highly likely to have a fantastic time studying here.
As well as the young ones fresh out of school, Glasgow University also attracts many 'mature' students and over my 5 years there, I found the camaraderie and banter among young and old alike second to none! With the exception of courses like medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, students are required to select 3 subjects to study in their first year. Furthermore, these subjects need not be from the one faculty - i.e. your primary interest may be physics for example but you could also select English Literature and Biology to study in your first year too! While at first this set-up may not seem too appealing, I guarantee that if you choose wisely, you may find that you end up enjoying another...

Caledonian is a good university.
Review of Glasgow Caledonian University by
il_cacciatore
Advantages: Central location, good facilities and good choice of courses
Disadvantages: Only two cash machines (ATMs) for 15000 students
...I am a level four student on the Building Surveying course at Glasgow Caledonian University.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Glasgow Caledonian is located on one campus on Cowcadden's Road across from Buchanan Street Bus Station in Glasgow. The University is quite young as it was Glasgow Polytechnic until 1993 when it became a fully fledged university.
The university has 90 undergraduate courses and 40 post graduate courses with over 14,000 students currently studying with 1500 staff.
It comprises of a number of 'schools':
School of Built and Natural Environment
School of business
School of Computing and mathematics
School of Engineering, Science and Design
School of Health and Social Care
School of Life Sciences
School of Law and Social Sciences
School of Built and Natural Environment
The principle...

Glasgow Uni, the best choice of all
Review of Glasgow University by
Conicview
Advantages: Choice of Honours subject
Disadvantages: Popular courses oversubscribed
...I first went to Glasgow University from England, eleven years ago as a mature student and loved every moment of the undergraduate course. Glasgow University has many advantages for a mature student, as the first two years are the introductory years. During this time you take 4 ‘level one’ courses and 2 ‘level two’ courses. Its can be difficult to chose as there is such a wide range of subjects particularly in arts or social sciences. You don’t necessarily have to choose the subject on your UCCA form. Its possible in theory to cross faculties as long as the student is capable of doing the course. The advantage for a mature student is not only the wide choice but you can get into the learning /taking exams business more slowly.
During the third year students can either opt for further level one...

Glasgow's Alive
Review of Glasgow in general by

Advantages: Vibrant, City of Culture
Disadvantages: None
..., drinking and shopping. What else is there to do in Glasgow, I hear you ask?
Museums and Art Galleries
---------------------------------
One of the best things about Glasgow is that many Art Galleries and Museums are free to enter. The Hunterian Art Gallery is situated near Glasgow University, and contains paintings by Hunter, but also a replica of Rennie Mackintosh’s Town House. The University is located beside Kelvingrove Park. You will also find the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum here, and this is Glasgow’s Main Gallery.
The Museum of Transport, is dedicated to …err, Transport, whether it be car, motorcycle or train. There are plenty of restored carriages and the like in here, and it is definitely worth a visit.
Glasgow Green is a park which is adjacent to the Clyde on the East Side of the city, and it is here where you...

Glasgow Tries Harder Updated 3/04 (scroll down)
Review of Glasgow in general by
mark-southside
Advantages: unexpected, value
Disadvantages: not picture postcard pretty
...and a substantial Asian population. There are several large Parks, Pollockshields is home to the Burrell Collection and Pollock House (NTS), where you could easily imagine you are in the countryside. At the edge is comfortable suburbia and one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK.
To the west there is the West End, home of the BBC, Botantic Gardens, University, luvvies and movers and shakers. If you have money this is probably where you will settle. The old docks down along the River Clyde are for the most part fairly derelict but a vast amount of money is going into regenerating this area. Key developments are the wonderful Glasgow Science Centre, Planitarium and IMAX, shortly to be joined by a new transport Museuem, BBC and it is rumoured Channel 4. Keep going and you will come to working class Ibrox (Rangers FC), Partick, and the out...

The Palace for Glasgow's people
Review of People´s Palace (Glasgow) by
duskmaiden
Advantages: some great exhibits, free, the Winter Gardens
Disadvantages: Some tatty exhibits
...on that floor there was an exhibition about the pros and cons of alcohol. I had studied the temperance movement in the West of Scotland and the association of poverty with drinking in my degree course. I found it interesting as it displayed both sides of the argument and had a lot of alcohol paraphernalia including 1990s alcopop bottles. Me and my friend had a good time remembering trying things such as Hooch, Two dogs and diamond Blush from Akrams shop in Stirling University.
Upstairs did not quite capture my imagination as much as downstairs. The middle seemed to be slightly political which I skipped. I am not that interested in politics. There was also a lot of space devoted to Glasgow’s industrial heritage. I noticed in this part the interpretation was a bit tatty and faded. Some of the words on some of the panels were very difficult to read...

Glasgow - excellent
Review of Glasgow University by
mrbounty
Advantages: culture, beauty and all you could want
Disadvantages: weather, rains all the time
...Glasgow uni been around since 1451 and well it's good. One of the best in Scotland at least. Comparable to Edinburgh, although us Glaswegians will never admit it. The selection of cources is as good as you can get. Glasgow being the biggest city in Scotland is also in my opinion the best. I'm originally an Aberdeen man and have family in Edinburgh so I've been round them all. Edinburgh is beautiful, Aberdeen is rich but Glasgow has culture! And who needs money or beauty when you have culture. You will never get bored, the uni campus is beautiul in itself and, as is so rare, all courses are in the same area of the city! A great benefit leading to a concentrated student area full of pubs, clubs and eateries. And last but not least the teaching seems to be damned good. What else could you ask for?...

Glasgow, a city near the Scottish countryside
Review of Glasgow (Scotland) by
Conicview
Advantages: Lots to do, near magnificent countryside
Disadvantages: It rains sometimes
...too. I love the Buchannan Galleries because its new and shiny but Argyle, Buchannan and Sauchiehall Street have loads of interesting shops too. There are also usually a few buskers around, with bagpipes to entertain you and lighten the shopping load.
Glasgow has a number of universities but the oldest, Glasgow University is in the West End. The West End is well worth a visit or even a good place to stay. The university has a Visitors Centre with some helpful staff. The Byers Road is in the West End and a mecca for some interesting places to eat. If you are looking for something Italian try Leonardo's near the junction with Dumbarton Road.
If the weather turns really good, its easy to get out of Glasgow by car or public transport and explore the rest of SCotland. You don't have to go far to find peace and tranquility. Loch...

Glasgow, not just a Raintown!
Review of Glasgow in general by
believe
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Not enough time to see it all
...I don't live in Glasgow and I probably had the same preconceived ideas on it as most other non Glaswegians. But let me open your eyes to a side of the city not well known to outsiders. Starting with tourism there are many points of interest including Art Galleries of the highest standard, a standard which is backed up by The Glasgow School of Art which has a worldwide reputation for excellence. Museums and a University which will satisfy the curious and knowledge hungry types. All are free and well worth a visit. What about accomodation? Well depending on your budget ther are city centre hotels such as the Hilton or the Hospitality right down to friendly bed and breakfasts. Nightlife, its got the lot, theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys, fancy a flutter in the casino or a drink in any of the first class city centre bars and onto...
