...I'm in my second year studying at York and I'm loving it. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm very happy being there. I'm enjoying the course (well, some of the lectures aren't brilliant) and the social life if great. ~ General Information ~ The university was founded in 1963 and had only 200 students. Advantages: Facilities, sports, community

It's a tough choice with so many establishments to choose from and there are many factors which will affect your final decision. Get it wrong and it could change your life forever. Advantages: Nice campus, high in league tables
Disadvantages: Small, full of academic but not so hip students!

...The University of York is renound for being known as the University of Dork in the papers, though I didn't know this prior to accepting a place! This is probably because it has been climbing the league tables and is currently seventh in the Times top universities but also won "university of the year" for 2003, so its only natural that some of the students spend more time looking in their books than looking in the mirror. GEEKS I am also pretty biased seeing as I do Maths, which is full of "geeks" where as subjects such as humanities, business courses etc are a lot more trendy nowadays and the students are slightly cooler! In a questionnaire about the university I was asked to fill in gave me the question "draw and describe a typical maths student." My response was big hair, spotty, glasses, no style whatsoever, could smell slightly... Read review

...A couple of years ago I was seeing a girl and she went to York University. Had a great time with her I dont mind saying!!! I saw a bit of york while I was there visiting her for essentials. I can highly recommend visiting the chinese restaurant in the town call the Willow. Lovely food and not too expensive for you students. I found the uni to be a bit of a dive but did not see much of it other than her room. Worth the 220 mile drive though. I got back in 2 hours and 35 minutes once but dont tell the police!!!! Advantages: Friendly, quirky, excellent bars and restaurants and attractions that will suit everyone.
Disadvantages: Other people know this too and come in their hundreds

...I was born near to York in a place called Harrogate and went to York for University, I now return as regularly as I can. York is one of the few large cities in England that has retained it's prettiness whilst still being extremely friendly towards visitors. It does not sprawl far outside the city walls and provides something new on every visit. Architecture ------------------------ - Naturally the oldest thing in York are the Roman and Medival walls, which despite years of being repaired and reinforced are still walkable and in the Spring when the daffodils which line the banks are out, it is a best way to sightsee around York as it takes you past all the views. On a clear day, it is said you can see Leeds through binoculars. - In amongst other things, York has it's spectacular Minster wich is almost tucked away behind the main... Read review

...I spent 3 years at York University studying Computer Science and Maths between 1998 and 2002 (I know that is 4 years - I spent a year in London in between my second and third years on an industrial placement). ** Background ** York is a relatively new university founded in 1963. It has developed rapidly over the years and continues to grow and develop now. Since I first went to York in 1997 for an open day there have been some big changes in the campus and size of the University. Shortly before my arrival the Computer Science department relocated to a new purpose built building on the edge of the campus and during my time in York there were new buildings for the Biology department, some of the colleges and the building of a supermarket and shopping row on site. Advantages: No exams, modular courses, small friendly department
Disadvantages: Sometimes not enough practise rooms, no coffee machine!

...Like many sixth formers, when I was seventeen I was faced with the daunting prospect of reading a very, very thick textbook. And it wasn't for any of my A-level courses, either - it was the Big UCAS Book of Places To Spend The Next Three Years of Your Life - or, a directory of universities and courses. It was HUGE. I was TERRIFIED. Fortunately for me, I'd already pretty much established that I wanted to study music. [Most of my teachers had realised this in my GCSE years when I tended to miss their classes due to viola and piano lessons...] I had convinced myself that I wanted to stay somewhere close to home, which was in Oxford - probably on a bringing-washing-home basis, to tell the truth - so I went to look at nearby universities. Advantages: Excellent course coverage, good module options, good staff and lecturers

...I guess I am the perfect person to review this, seeing as I am currently at York Uni studying biology (well actually Ecology - but more on that later!). York was my first choice university (after I got rejected from Oxford, which was definitely a good thing in my opinion because Oxford wouldn’t have suited me at all [I know this because my girlfriend is there, and therefore I go there quite a lot, and get to experience what it's like]). Firstly, before going into any biology related drivel, I will talk about the city of York itself, then about the University campus. York: It's small, it's cold most of the time (although the weather has been quite nice recently), and there isn’t a lot to do (although it has a bit more than Cambridge which is where I come from). It is also full of American tourists in the summer which is annoying... Read review

Disadvantages: Can be seen as stuffy and old-fashioned, a lot of work, may not suit all

...Oxford University is one of the most prestigious in the world. It may be second to Cambridge in the Times league table, but really this is relatively insignificant. The truth is that there are many top quality universities, and I shall not pretend that Oxbridge is automatically superior, when in reality places like York, Durham, etc can all offer at least as good facilities in certain subjects. As a current student of Oxford University (just finished first year PPE at Jesus), however, I feel qualified to write a guide for those that may be thinking of applying, and anyone who’s just interested. I shan’t write everything here – there are separate categories on Dooyoo concerning the interview, courses, etc so I shall just try to give a broad overview here (and probably write in more detail on the other aspects later...
