The University of Sheffield - its brilliant!
Review of Sheffield University by  willbradley

Advantages: Nightlife, quality of teaching, student union, sheffield itself, meadowhall shopping complex, university and acomadation locations
Disadvantages: Expensive sports centre, weather

...I am currently a student at Sheffield University and I have spent 2 years in studying in Sheffield. In the first year I stayed in a large halls of residence, located in a leafy suburb (still walking distance from uni and town centre) called Ranmoor. Has great bar and is v.big, it is a great place to be in your first year and make loads of friends. Close by is Broomhill, has supermarket, hair dressers, banks take aways and lots of pubs. Broomhill is great as it is close to all the halls. The Student Union is very good and the best I have seen. Sheffield was dubbed Student Union of the year at the Club Mirror Awards 2004 and rated Excellent in the 2005 Virgin Alternative Guide. The union nights are fantastic with cheap drinks, great bars and lots of other students. The union nights cater for everyone and each night of the week... Read review

Sheffield University - Yeah, quite nice
Review of Sheffield University by  Fuzzythehedgehog

Advantages: Excellent city to be a student in.
Disadvantages: Large university and halls a long way from main campus.

...I've just finsished my first year as a Geography student at Sheffield and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Sheffield University is pretty good, but Sheffield is an excellent city to be a student in. Firstly the University itself is very large. This is good because it means that there is always lots going on, i.e. loads of societies and clubs, but it often means that you don't feel part of the community like you would at school or a smaller University. Having said that because there are so many students it means that the Union is realtively rich so can afford some quite decent acts and bands and there are some quite good club nights there. The union shop is particularly excellent selling everthing a student needs at relatively cheap prices. If you are about to start you first year you will probably be staying in halls. I didn... Sheffield Hallam - A University of 3 Halves
Review of Sheffield Hallam University by  ihatebroccoli

Advantages: Excellent facilities if you are a computing/science/english student
Disadvantages: Arts facilities are poor, Psalter library appalling

...willing to help. The only big problem I really had with my course (Film Studies) was the complete lack of teaching in relating the course and what we had learnt as part of it, to the world outside University. We were never given any careers advice, never told what options we had after leaving University. Whereas other courses such as in computing or science, students were offered work placements, given practise interviews, generally shown how to hone their skills in order to market themselves effectively and to get a job at the end of their University lives. Arts students at SHU must fend for themselves apparently! Psalter Lane aside, Sheffield is a lovely, friendly and attractive city, and the City campus is a modern and professional environment in which to study your (non-Arts) subject. Business and computing courses are very well... Read review

Ain't no party like a Sheffield Uni Party...
Review of Sheffield University by  scruff

Advantages: Small friendly City and the university departments are usually top notch
Disadvantages: Sheffield - its not exactly the Bahamas is it?

...Noticed the other day on CIAO that they were asking for reviews on Sheffield University, so as it is only a few weeks before the universities open for the new semesters I thought I`d be really helpful and crib together this article. Oh yes I was also a student there – so I do know a bit about the place (graduated in 1999 with a degree in Physics) especially the pub life… Where shall we start? Well let’s go for a review of the University itself – well you are supposed to go there to learn! Personally I can only comment on the chemistry, math’s and physics departments, as they were the only ones I ever had dealings with. The staff were all very friendly and I found they would usually go out of their way to help me with any problems. Be warned they don’t take too kindly to work handed in late…. There has been a few changes... Read review

Coming to Sheffield Uni?- READ THIS FIRST
Review of Sheffield University by  leafy81

Advantages: Good pubs, friendly people, good reputation
Disadvantages: lack of bars, poor shopping, some departmental disorganisation

...I did a posgraguate masters in biotech law and ethics here, so i knoew from the very beginning i was only going to be in sheffield for one year and I have to say i was disappointed to leave. Unfortunately, this had more to do with the amazing people and the experience i was saying goodbye to rather than any lingering affection for the university. As far as Sheffield goes it is a great city with a good public transport service in the form of buses and trams that are fairly cheap. There's an abundance of restaurants and good pubs and sheffield has some of the best gig nights at the Plug club. Unfortunately it has lost one of it's best clubs recently when Gatecrasher burnt to the ground, but expect that to be opening its doors to students once again within the next few years, and in the meantime there are other clubs in the form... Why choose Sheffield
Review of Sheffield University by  leonardholliday

Advantages: Great social life, loads of students in the city
Disadvantages: Sheffield is quite hilly and the halls of residence are pretty far away from the university.

...I'm a first year journalism studies student at Sheffield University and to be honest the choice of Sheffield was based purely on the courses excellnt repuatation and took little interest in the city and university itself. I did not expect to get grades good enough to attend so I reluctantly made it my first choice and was surprised and a little daunted when I actually got accepted. However upon arriving here I have been overwhelemd by how fantastic this university is. The students union, voted best in the country by Virign University Guides last year, is helpful and gives students a wide range of services and events that I have enjoyed over the past year. Accomodation here can be hit or miss, as a self-catering house student, rented from the university's extensive amount of property situated very close to the union and town centre, i... Read review

Universal University
Review of Sheffield University by  Eudora

Advantages: Friendly, Highly Rated, Cheaper in the North, Lots Happening.
Disadvantages: It's colder than in the South!

...After experiencing a very unhappy time at Bristol University, I think I have become more critical and analytical about universities in general. I am currently studying at Sheffield and I can honestly say that there is not one thing that I'd change about the place, except maybe the cold in the winter! Unlike Bristol, Sheffield has a rich diversity of people - with representations from most cultures - which gives the place a very "international" feel. There is also so much happening here, not just in the city centre with all the pubs and clubs, but in the university itself. There's a night event organised by the union every night - each being fun and inexpensive. Academically, the university has an excellent repuatation. As student welfare is at the heart of the union, students are generally happier and more able to cope... Read review

OH LOVELY SHEFFIELD
Review of Sheffield University by  IMPUDICUS

Advantages: size, nightlife, good Union
Disadvantages: HILLS!university run housing,size

...Having read the opinions of my fellow students, I felt compelled to write my own. I'm a second year Biology student, and chose to come to Sheffield due to the excellent reputation of my chosen department, and overall I'm happy I made that choice. Though not a campus based uni, most of the buildings are based around Western Bank, close to the Union (but I would love to know why they've put us up in the Arts Tower this year for most lectures....I study science!). The university is one of the biggest and best in the country, but to be honest it was the city of Sheffield itself which swayed me to have sheffield as my first UCAS choice....I love the place! The uni itself is close to West Street, which takes you into the city centre, with the fantastic Division Street leading off it(alternative shops galore), and all the main banks... Read review

sheffield great student city
Review of Sheffield University by  laline72

Advantages: nightlife
Disadvantages: not many

...i have been in sheffield for three years, both the universities are highly rated in all aspects, i want to tell you a little about the city itself. Sheffield is located in the heart of Britain, right on the M1 easy to get to from both north and south. It has a large city centre with excellent shops including a tram system. The centre also contains Ponds Forge the international standard sports centre and The Crucible theatre. There are a multitude of cinemas including a new Virgin entertainment centre on the outskirts. For shopoholics there is also the meadowhall shopping centre. There is a tremendous nightclub scene, including the infamous Gatecrasher at the Republic nightclub other student venues include club Wow, The Leadmill and Kingdom. Accommodation is cheap averaging about 30 pounds per week and the city is less crime ridden... Read review

Love SheffieldUni
Review of Sheffield University by  cathpye85

Advantages: nice location, great friendliness
Disadvantages: Hilly, dear halls

...Loved it, loved it, loved it. The best three years of my life so far were spent doing my degree in the Steel City. It is a red-brick uni that dates back to 1905, but experienced massive development in the late 50\'s and 60\'s. It is part of the Russell Group of universities - the league of the best unis in the country- and regularly ranks in the top 15 uni\'s in the UK. It specialises in engineering and medicine, but received a good rating in all of the subjects in recent assessments. There has been a new-wave of building and expansion recently, meaning that new facilities are replacing some older and hotch-potch teaching areas (for example, the English department used to be housed in a church, old houses and generally begged and borrowed lecture theatres from other departments, but now it has its own specialist buildings...
