University of Wales, Aberystwyth

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing

...I have just completed my first year at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth studying Geography (Bsc) as a single subject and have enjoyed it immensely. Originally I hadn't planned on going, but it turned out to be the perfect choice, as I settled in really quickly. Aberystwyth students make up half the population therefore creating the perfect student atmosphere because everyone knows each other! Plus strangely enough, there are more English students at the Uni than Welsh. However, I personally believe that the relationship between students and locals is excellent. There is always a great atmosphere down at the local pubs when England play Wales at rugby and your never worried about showing your support for either team. The teaching at Aberystwyth as a whole is good, personally I have found the lecturers on my course very...

UWIC-University of Wales Institute Cardiff

Advantages: Own bus and nightclub. Cheap beer and excellent education.
Disadvantages: Can't think of one

...University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) has been a university since 1998. It was formerly known as Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, Llandaff Technical College and years before that it was the college for Mariners. UWIC quickly gained an award for excellence. UWIC has four sites across the city. Each campus has many different schools. Colchester Avenue- Catering and Hospitality. Howard Gardens- Art. Cyncoed- Teaching and Sport. Llandaff- Sciences, IT, Business, Design Technology, Art, Horticulture. There are about 10,000 students at UWIC across the four sites. UWIC has an active Students' Union which has its own bus service, bars and even has an interest in a night club in the city centre called Reds. Although UWIC already has an adequate provision of halls, 2005 will see the opening of brand new student...

Excellent University

Advantages: Great Location, Good Teaching, It's in Wales, Reasonably Cheap
Disadvantages: It is in the middle of nowhere

...Background: First some background, I studied Business Studies at Aberystwyth University from 1995 - 1998. Therefore I can comment on the teaching within the Economics, Accountancy and Business courses as well as some German Language and History courses that I took. I am going to break this review down into two, the university and the town life as both are as important as each other should you decide whether to spend the next 3 or 4 years of your life there.. I spent one year on Campus at the University (at the top of the hill) and two years living in the town (which is situated at the bottom of a hill). I am sure that a lot has changed since I left the University. I was however recently at the Town and nothing much seemed to have changed there since I left. I will apologise that this will probably be quite a lengthy review...

Porthmadog, Wales

Advantages: Good day out, Clean beaches
Disadvantages: Not a lot to do at night

...Porthmadog, Wales I first went there a few years ago after being recommended to go as the beach close by called Black Rock Sands would be brilliant to take the dogs on. It's brilliant as Black Rock beach is a drive on beach and dogs are welcome all year round on certain parts of the beach. It is kept clean and it's patrolled by lifeguards to looks after everyone and make sure they are safe. The waters clean for a UK beach and warm in the summer. There is a small charge for getting on the beach at holiday seasons but it isn't very much and well worth it for a day on the beach. It's also good late in the evening when everyone else has gone home to just have a drive across the beach. In the town itself there is a variety of shops, cafés and various other things to look at including the steam railway that goes across some...

My University

Advantages: It is in one of the most beautiful areas in the UK
Disadvantages: The weather can get a bit crazy

...When filling out my UCAS application form i was initially going to do medicine and added Swansea for law and psychology as my safety net. After actually visiting the campus, i completly changed my mind, scrapped the idea of doing medicine and am now in my final year at the University of Wales, Swansea. This university is a stone's throw from the beach. Swansea bay is by no means the best beach in and around Swansea but it is perfect for inbetween lectures on a sunny day, just chilling out or arranging beach parties. The uni itself has two main areas of accomedation. One is on campus, and the other is a harsh twenty minutes walk away in 'the Student Village'. However, i lived on the student village in my first year and it was an amazing experience and compared to the accomadation at other uni's (through my own open days and friend...

Good university

Advantages: Small campus and classes
Disadvantages: Can be very quiet on weekends, bit remote

...I am now in my second year at Newport. As it has in the last couple of years been made a full fledged University of Wales I have recently had a lot of people that my parents know asking me what the uni is like so that they can tell their sons or daughters. I have to mention that Newport wasn't one of my UCAS choices, but all of the universities that I applied for offered me conditional places that I didn't get the grades for. I went through clearing and was offered the choice of Truro or Newport, and as Cardiff was my first choice, it made sense to go there. When I first went to look around it I had no expectations of the place at all really (though this could be because I went two days after I came back from V festival and was really ill, so wasn't taking a whole lot in!!). The university is spread over two sites (soon to be three...

Holidaying in North Wales

Advantages: Beautiful location, fantastic cottages with all amenities
Disadvantages: Just that you need some form of transport

...My mum and her partner have spent a couple of holidays now at a location near Bala in North Wales - the location in question, Pen Cefn, boasts four properties for rent, each of differing proportions. This year, mum decided to treat me (because I reached the big 40) and my sister and her family to a week long holiday in one of the properties. Having had a superb time, I thought it was time to pass the news on to others. Address and location "Pen Cefn" Sarnau Bala Gwynedd LL23 7LG Tel: 01678 530481 or 530413 E-mail: bevianna@btinternet.com Website: www.pencefn.com Proprietors' names: Ian and Bev Moss, Anna Hayward The nearest town, about five miles away, is Bala (which is just inside the Snowdonia National Park), which is on the A494 road. Pen Cefn, which is a smallhold, plus the cottages, is just above a small hamlet...

Welcome to Wales

Advantages: plenty to do in Summer
Disadvantages: less to do in Spring or Autumn

...NAME OF LOCATION: Llandudno, North Wales BACKGROUND Gee Vee Travel were doing a March trip to Llandudno and my mother decided to book this particular holiday for her, my father, and myself. Although I have visited Llandudno many times, they have usually been day trips from home (Chesterfield) or from other North Wales destinations that we have stayed at, so staying in Llandudno would be a great change. I read several Ciao reviews on the topic so that I knew what was available in March - not a lot, most things open from Easter to October, and Easter was 3 weeks after my trip! Typical. However, do not be despondent as we found plenty to do in and around Llandudno. Our Driver took us out on 2-day trips but we had plenty of time to explore Llandudno itself on the first evening and all day Thursday. We also had time after our...

Fun and lively campus-based uni

Advantages: Lots to do, Swansea's a very student-focused place
Disadvantages: Not the most attractive location, bad weather

...I've been studying at Swansea University for two years now on a business management course. I never intended to actually come here, and just put it down on my UCAS application form because I had an extra space, but when I first visited the university on an open day there was something about it that convinced me I had to go there. First opinions of the uni might not be very good. The town needs a bit of a facelift, you have to cross a busy road to get to the uni, it will probably be raining when you get there, and the uni itself has a few too many unattractive grey concrete buildings and tower block-style accomodation. You shouldn't however judge the university on first appearances. The facilities are very good, with a large library and lots of computer rooms. The uni's been going through a bit of a facelift and a lot of the old...

My first opinion on Swansea Uni

Advantages: Friendly, relaxed, lots of students.
Disadvantages: Not as big as Cardiff, not all courses.

...I've been at Swansea Uni for three years now and I've had a great time. I don't know of anyone that's come to Swansea and not liked it here. The university itself is a relaxed, friendly kind of place. The campus is compact and attractive and has plenty of bars and cafes for meeting friends etc. Library facilities are good - it's sometimes hard to get a PC at peak times e.g. lunchtimes but in the evenings it's much easier. The city itself is not huge and lacks the facilities of, say, Cardiff, but there's a good range of shops, pubs and clubs and plenty of student hangouts. Good places for students to go include Uplands Tavern, Pool Sanctuary, Spoofers and most of the pubs along Wind Street. Out on Gower, the scenery is lovely with plenty of sandy beaches and great surfing and summer barbecues and beach parties are popular...
