Shell Optimax unleaded
Review of Shell Optimax Petrol by
Rabid
Advantages: Higher performance, cleans fuel system as you drive
Disadvantages: None if you dont mind paying a little extra
...In the UK we currently already pay extorniate prices for our petrol so why would i recommend paying even more for what some believe to be nothing more than just advertising hype?
Well, i can only speak from my own experiences in regards to Shells Optimax unleaded but for me paying the extra 4p a litre more is a small price for a far superior product.
'What is Shell Optimax?'
Shell Optimax is a higher octane fuel available in both diesel and unleaded, standard unleaded petrol has an octane (RON) rating of 95 whereas Optimax is rated at 98 RON, basically what this translates into for you and me is that Optimax burns alot faster, cleaner and also offers a far superior performance to 'most' cars especially noticable when pulling away from lights or round-abouts whilst also offering a better mid-speed accelaration improvement.
'So...

If unleaded can be 50p per litre in Ireland....
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
ildamiano
Advantages: n/a
Disadvantages: n/a
...What has gone wrong? Ten years ago, Irish people flocked in their tens of thousands each week across the border to Northern Ireland and across the sea to Holyhead to shop for absolutely everything, because food, beer, TVs and practically everything else was about 30% cheaper. Petrol was no exception, with huge queues at filling stations just inside the Northern Irish border.
Now, unbelievably, the opposite is in evidence. Unleaded petrol is currently 50p (sterling) per litre here in the Republic, while diesel (which I believe is more expensive than petrol in the UK) is a mere 44 pence sterling. As a result, all but the most die-hard unionists are now crossing the border to fill up their tanks and do their weekly shopping, resulting in millions of pounds in lost revenue to the British Exchequer.
So what went wrong? Basically...

Great Value Sovereign Petrol Rotary Mower
Review of Sovereign Petrol Rotary Mower NG460 by
Chadderz
Advantages: Cuts the Lawn in half the time an electric mower can
Disadvantages: You have to push it
...to price ratio. The shop assistant a very helpful person informed me that the Briggs and Stratton engine was one of the best when it came to petrol mowers and the metal blade guard was preferable to a plastic as those tended to crack if hit by a stone off of the blade.
What was the experience like once I got the box in the car and home cutting the grass?
Well I just managed to squeeze the box in the car along with oil for the engine and a fuel can that I filled at the 1st petrol station I came to with unleaded petrol. Once home the box was opened and the handle and operating lever attached to the mower in about 10 minutes. You will need an adjustable spanner as there are no tools included. A quick read of the instructions informed me that I needed to fill with oil and petrol before use. I quickly topped up the oil ensuring the correct...

Most expensive part of running a car is petrol
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
christopherbrown
Advantages: The prices are comming down, protest about the prices in the correct way, not by driving slow, as you still use the fuel.
Disadvantages: Still a little more expensive than equator countries, but look at the state of ecconomy.
...I have been driving for a good few years (since November 1996 in fact) and everyone moans about the price that we pay for our fuel. In fact, I travel abroad quite often and I compare prices, and when you compare our priced petrol to somewhere like France, then you realise there is not much difference on price. At the moment, (taking into considderation of exchange rate being less than 10 francs to the pound) you will notice that we vertually pay the same price of petrol to our French counterparts to say that a year ago, there was a good 15p per litre difference for unleaded petrol. The petrol prices are still low at 75.8p for unleaded petrol (in Nottingham) in places which I do not mind paying, and this price can also be found in parts of London.
You will find that places like Spain where there price of fuel is half our price, just...

Low Sulphur Petrol Not Available in Aberdeen, Europe's Oil Capital
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
Union
Advantages: Good For Environment
Disadvantages: Missing Out on Proce Discount
...Low Sulphur Petrol is NOT Available in Aberdeen which is Europe's Oil Capial and at the petrol stations I have telephone they don't even know about this type of petrol never mind when and if it will be available so if this petrol is not available here in where a large number of the Oil Companies have there main offices in the United Kingdom. I can't say when the rest of the country will get to benefit from the 3p reduction offered over normal unleaded petrol. I do agree that this petrol will no doubt help reduce emissions produced by cars and vans but you can only use it if you can buy it...

Boycott petrol, buy LPG
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
madwolf
Advantages: Clean, cheap
Disadvantages: Expensive conversion, not available everywhere yet
...I had my 1967 Land Rover converted to run on LPG a year ago.
Since then, the £850 conversion has paid for itself.
The differential between LPG and petrol is getting wider; when I had the conversion done, LPG was 36p a litre, and Unleaded was 69.9p. Now I pay 38p a litre for LPG and have seen Unleaded for as much as 86.9p.
The gap has widened by an astonishing 15p!
It's not cheap to convert cars, and there is the problem of where to put the extra tank, but it is definitely worth considering, provided there is somewhere near you where you can fill up. This is going to get easier soon as more and more forecourts get LPG pumps. BP is committed to installing them in hundreds of stations.
There is also the advantage that as LPG (which is just Propane) burns more cleanly than petrol it means your oil lasts longer without changing...

Just how much tax do we pay on petrol
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
northernalex
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: loads
...You'd be suprised to know that two thirds of the cost of petrol is tax going straight to our government. That means that id you fill up your car with unleaded at you local filling station and it costs you £30 then you are only buying about £10 worth of petrol. The problem will only get worse in the future because when the price per litre goes over 99.9p then all the petrol stations will have to change their signs resulting on the costs being passed onto us.
But is boycotting the pumps the answer?? I'm my oppinion it not really an answer but it will help to show the government that we, as consumers, really mean business. True if we dont fill up on the 1st of August (which i wont) then we'll have to fill up on the 2nd (or 3rd) because we all need car juice.
I think the answer to this problem lies in repeated boycots e.g the first...

The Coleman Peak 1 Petrol Stove
Review of Coleman Peak 1 Petrol Camping Stove by
Longshanx
Advantages: Small, portable, high heat (but controllable), reliable
Disadvantages: Price of fuel
...I purchased a Coleman Peak 1 camping stove about 12 years ago, when I embarked on an expedition to walk the Penine Way.
The stove is lightweight, portable, and best of all - reliable. It gives a good heat, boiling 2 pints of water in less than 5 minutes (try doing that with your standard Calor Gaz stove!).
Although the power output is high, it is also very controllable. There is a small lever to adjust the flame, and it can be lowered to a simmer if that is all that you need.
Safety has also been taken into consideration such that, even though the stove is fuelled with petrol, it can be tilted, turned, and even inverted without flaring up in your face.
The fuel made by Coleman is rather expensive (around 9 pounds for a 1 litre tin), although the newer models can now use standard unleaded fuel of the type you put in your car...

Save money on fuel
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
ScottishWestie
Advantages: Simple steps, money to be saved
Disadvantages: Some effort required
..., making some basic sensible changes will see great savings and give you the incentive to save even more.
Look at prices at the pumps locally; there are a number of web sites that compare prices in your area such as www.petrolgauge.com & www.whatprice.co.uk/local-petrol-prices .
Supermarkets often do promotions, spend a set sum of money on your weekly shopping and get 5p a litre off fuel, that is a big offer and on an average car could save you about £4.00 filing your tank.
Why pay extra for super unleaded when normal unleaded will do? Oil companies can give ample evidence of the improvements to your engine that super unleaded will provide. However, with the majority of cars on the roads you will see no difference at all. Why waste your money? Some people will tell you that their car runs better on super unleaded than normal unleaded...

Liquid Gold-in more ways than one
Review of Shell Optimax Petrol by
peterkinxl5
Advantages: Increased performance(esp mid range) and economy, quieter and smoother idling
Disadvantages: Cost 89.9p per litre eye-wateringly expensive (at time of writing) availability-not too many Shell stations around these days, may need a couple of tankfulls to be effective, benefits only for those with performance cars/modded engines
...I started driving back in 1999 when I purchased a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 to commute to Telford and as the Shell station on the Tettenhall Rd, Wolverhampton and filled it with Shell Regular Unleaded-nothing unusual about that.
Well it was about that time, I started to notice a premium grade of Petrol called Optimax. I asked my best friend about it who told me not to bother because the benefits were only noticable in higher performance cars. Well I changed cars and upgraded to a Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S-a bit more of a performance car. After tanking it up with the regular unleaded to see what it was usually like, I then used Optimax on my next visit. About £5 more than normal to fill the tank and I was expecting it to turn into a Ferrari. No such luck, no difference at all in my experience. All I'd done is waste a fiver.
But again, life...
