THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS
Review of I, Robot - Isaac Asimov by
Mauri
Advantages: Great ideas and imagination
Disadvantages: none
...future a journalist interviews one of the head scientists (robopsychologist) of US Robotics and Mechanical Men Inc. the largest and most powerful manufacturer of robots in the world. Susan Calvin in her role as a robopsychologist watched the development of robot throughout her long career. Now 75 years of age she is about to retire and in the interview she gives the journalist an overview of robot development by relating a number of tales (the stories) that describe the problems and issues that the existence of robots have highlighted.
The stories are as follows
Robbie
Runaround
Reason
Catch That Rabbit
Liar!
Little Lost Robot
Escape!
Evidence
The Evitable Conflict
In the course of reading these stories we are presented with many scenarios that all seem to contradict the Laws of Robotics thus represent a problem or even...

I liked I ROBOT, but I didn't quite love it.
Review of I, Robot DVD by
Gamedude
Advantages: Special effects, action
Disadvantages: Derivative story and spoiled twists.
...Will Smith plays a chicago cop in the year 2035 in the hyped sci-fi thriller "I, Robot".
I Robot is a surprising smash hit and a pretty interesting but derivative sci-fi thriller. The movie has you guessing for the first moments of the film but then ends up spoiling the movie by revealing surprise twists to early and the movie from then on has no choice but to bombard you with the usual standard action stuff.
The movie is about Smith playing a cop investigating the murder of a high profiled doctor working for US Robotics a man named Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell). It seems Detective Spooner has a real dislike for living in the future and most specifically the robots designed by US Robotics who are now populating Chicago.
If you never seen any of Will Smith's movies you be put of by his constant sarcasm and somewhat lame...

Don't think I'll be wanting a Robot helper...
Review of I, Robot DVD by
karenes
Advantages: action packed, intriguing
Disadvantages: none I can think of
...I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and write a review of I, Robot, the adaptation of Isaac Asimov's classic collection of stories.
I have seen plenty of previews and read plenty of reviews, so I was expecting action, action and more action and, well, I got it.
The scene is set, Chicago - 2035. US Robotics is the producer of utility robots, meant to make human's lives easier by running errands, cleaning and doing all the rubbish jobs we dont want.
We are introduced to Detective Spooner (Will Smith) as he wakes from a nightmare in which he sees a young girl apparently about to drown in a car which has crashed into a lake/river (the significance of this is not shown until later).
He receives a call to the offices of US Robotics (whose skyscraper dominates the city skyline) in response to the apparent suicide of Dr Lanning...

I Robot - be afraid, be very afraid!
Review of I, Robot DVD by
yummy.mummy
Advantages: You can pause on the Will Smith shower scene!
Disadvantages: None -it's a great film!
.... Lanning worked for the US Robotics Headquarters, helping to design robots intended to help humans with day to day tasks. He is requested personally by Lanning through a holographic message he left before his death. He is immediately suspicious of the death, and declares it not to be a suicide.
Whilst investigating Lannings laboratory, which is where he jumped from, a robot launches itself at him and jumps through the broken window, running away with Spooner in hot pursuit. He is eventually captured and taken into custody, where Spooner wishes to question him, but is denied it as the owners of US Robotic Headquarters take the robot away to be assimilated.
But before they take him away the robot talks to Spooner and displays characteristics that are in contrast to a robots normal functions and ways. He is highly charismatic and is named...

The first rule of Robot Club is...
Review of I, Robot DVD by
Zoe
Advantages: A superior sci-fi blockbuster
Disadvantages: It won't be winning any oscars
...before a mass distribution by the largest robotics company in the world (US Robotics) which will see the ratio of robots to humans rise to 1:5, Spooner is called to an apparent suicide of (wouldn’t you know it) the inventor of the three laws of robotics. The irony just won’t stop as Dr. Alfred Lanning’s (James Cromwell) suicide starts to look like it could be the work of a robot. The trouble is this isn’t some post apocalyptic terminator filled universe, this is a perfect utopia where robots are man’s faithful servants and the perfect circle of the three laws of robotics (hard wired into every robot) prevent a robot from harming any human…or is it?
So then, have Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman (previously responsible for such crimes against sci-fi as ‘Batman and Robin’ and the risible ‘Lost in Space’) sucked the brains right out of Asimov...

Robots, robots and more robots
Review of I, Robot DVD by
Estelle999
Advantages: Will Smith naked
Disadvantages: Not enough of Will Smith naked
...The movie is set in the year 2035 where there are robots everywhere. The robots are here to help us human and to ensure that they help us and don't start taking over the world 3 laws are downloaded on their hardware:
First Law: A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law: A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Detective Spooner is called to investigate the apparent suicide of Dr. Lanning. It soon becomes clear that he has actually been murdered and Spooner suspects a robot (Sonny). The problem of course is that if Sonny killed Dr. Lanning that means that he has broken...

I, Robot You, Will Smith
Review of I, Robot DVD by
afy9mab
Advantages: Intelligent story-telling with high production values
Disadvantages: Really obvious product placement
...Technophobe Detective Del Spooner lives in a near future where robots are as common as kettles. But when Alfred Lanning, the father of robotics apparently commits suicide, Spooner believes he has been murdered and that the murderer may be a robot named Sonny, who has somehow managed to break his programming. Spooner’s biggest problem is how to get anyone else to believe him. Especially as mega-corporation US Robotics is about to release its latest robot; the NS-5, whose introduction will increase the number of robots to one for every five humans.
Director Alex Proyas has never been one to shy away from a challenge. After dealing with a star dying on set in “The Crow” and a film that existed in eternal night in the aptly named “Dark City”, he decided to take a crack at the heretofore unfilmable work of physicist turned futurist Isaac...

Ohh no, Robots are taking over!
Review of I, Robot DVD by
michelleb3210
Advantages: Special Effects, Future World Specs
Disadvantages: Not the best acting from everyone
...It's set in 2035, ooh how the technology has moved on.
It's the robot era, almost every person has a robot helping them with everyday chores. If you didn't have one, you were frowned upon.
Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner's (Smith) pet hate was these robots. It was his phobia, the thought they were a danger to everyone and everything.
Det. Spooner was on an investigation to solve Dr Alfred Lanning's (Cromwell) death. Dr Lanning worked for U.S. Robotics, where sonny, the newest model of robot, was born. However, Sonny was found at the scene of the crime, if it was Sonny it would of meant violating the Three Laws of Robotics, which Scientists say was impossible as they are programmed machines, not living entities. I can tell you the Three Laws as it might reveal the whole plot of the story.
If robots broke them laws...
