Wester Digital External Hard Drive 80GB USB 2.0
Advantages: Portable, easy to use, never failed on me yet!
Disadvantages: Perhaps only the disc size, but it has taken me 2 years to fill it!
...Wester Digital, a respected brand name, and i agree!
I have owned the unit now for around 2 years, and have 0 problems. My internal hard drive has died on me twice but my external one, never!
This 80gb HDD is perfect for storing large files, home movies, photo albums, music etc. It's ideal when transfering data from one place to another, simply unplug it, plug it in elsehwre and hey presto!
It supports drag & drop so moving files couldn't be easier.
Standard power adpater with 3-pin plug, and USB 2.0 connection to your pc, mac, server etc.
It is easily recognised by each operating system and i have yet to find one that doesn't support the unit. Plug it in, wait around 30secs and it's up and running.
Can be stored horizontally, and if you have 3 like me, you can stack them perfectly, or store them vertically...

Freecom 400GB external USB Hard drive
Advantages: Fast, high capacity storage. Well built, looks good. 2 year warranty, No fan.
Disadvantages: No fan.
...and certainly smaller than my other two external hard drives by quite a margin.
The back has sockets for power, USB 2.0 and an on/off switch which is also feels nice when flicked on/off, nothing half baked there. Unlike some units, this one has no fan, both a blessing and a curse. More on that later.
So, connect it to a spare USB 2.0 socket on the PC, plug in the power supply and switch on...

I used it on an XP based PC and one with Vista. In both cases it was recognised correctly as a Freecom external hard drive and appeared as a new drive in Windows Explorer. No drivers needed, just Plug and Play, working as it should.
Due to the lack of fan, it is extremely quiet. I was very pleased to see that inside, it used a Samsung hard drive. Having used various different makes over...

External Hard Drive Fun
Advantages: Size, Easy to Use, Quick, Simple
Disadvantages: Could be a little bigger in capacity
...from the device.
Width - 4.8cm
Depth - 4.4cm
Height - 1.4cm
Weight - 40g
Once again this like some of the flash drives that are going around at the moment this hard drive is also plug and play with most operating systems however encase it doesn't install automatically a driver is included in the package but I haven't really had to use this very often at all unless your using an old operating system like Windows 98 which was well before this time of hard drive or portable device.

No Fuss, No Click Backup Hard Drive
Advantages: Easy to use even for beginners.
Disadvantages: None that I have found.
...Having experienced one or two fatal computer crashes in the past and lost every single file on my hard drive and on the first occasion without a back-up, I have been very careful about backing up my files to DVD disks since, but it was quite a slow and laborious task waiting for those disks to burn, and then on some occasions I would get that dreaded message, "back-up failed!" appear on the screen and have to start all over again!
Watching the QVC shopping channel one Sunday morning, I noticed that they were demonstrating the ClickFree external hard drive, and all you had to do was to plug it in to your USB port and wait. It would search and back-up every file on your hard drive without you having to click or do anything, and then once it had done its job, all you had to do was simply unplug it and put it away. This was something that...

Review of Clickfree 120GB USB Integrated External Hard Drive

Best external USB hard drive.
Advantages: Fast, super-stylish and near-silent.
Disadvantages: Difficult to detect activity.
...I have owned this drive for a few months and have found it to be excellent. But I disagree with a previous review in several areas.
This is the most stylish external hard drive I have seen. It is also one of the cheapest per GB, currently available for just £93 at Misco.co.uk, for example.
It works with Macs and PCs and is almost silent. It comes with a USB cable and a driver CD for old Windows operating systems. The external design is superb minimalism and looks like it could have been designed by Apple themselves. The case is all aluminium except the front and back. The front face is black except for the capacity indicator of ?500GB? which lights up in blue and flickers during activity. The rear has the power and USB ports and a small power switch.
The 500GB box value translates to 465GB under Windows due to the differing ways...

External Hard-drive fit for rugged adventures
Advantages: Fast transfer speed, protection from knocks and drops
Disadvantages: Fairly high price
....
Now, leaving the memory capacity of the hard-drive and moving onto other areas of the LaCie hard-drive. This particular hard-drive has a USB 2.0 interface, which is basically the type of connection the hard-drive uses in order to connect to an external device, usually a desktop PC or laptop. A USB 2.0 interface means that the transfer of all files to and from the hard-drive will be fairly quick. Another factor, which speeds up the transfer of files is the buffer size. Buffer size put into simple terms is a region in the hard-drive where data is held temporarily, before permanently entering the hard-disk memory. The buffer size of the LaCie external hard-drive is 8 MB, this means that a maximum of 8 MB of data is temporarily held before being fully transferred into the hard-drive. The buffering process means that data is transferred...

IOMEGA 500GB EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE
Advantages: Easy installation, looks good, ease of use
Disadvantages: None found
...2.0 are never going to set the world on fire, it's more than acceptable for storing and replaying your films on as I'm doing.
The case does get relatively warm in use, but with no internal fan I guess this is how it dissipates the heat generated by the drive.
Highly recommended!...

Toshiba 1TB Desktop Hard Drive (USB)
Advantages: Value for money, massive storage, great design, decent speeds!
Disadvantages: Bright flasing blue/red/purple light on the front.
...My laptop is fairly old but has served me very well (it's a Toshiba incidentaly) , it has about 27GB of storage space which nowdays isn't enough for all my work as well as movies and music.
I decided to look at some external hard drives so I could store everything that I wanted and more. This particular model appealed to me, not just because it was the cheapest, but because it had very good specs (1TB of storage to say the least) and was a Toshiba. A very good brand that I trust.
So I forked out the cash and had it delivered to my door. Opening the box, I saw that it was slightly longer but overall smaller than it had apeared online. This was fine as I am not bothered about space.
It comes supplied with everything you need to get it running and took me about 2 mins to read the quick start guide and get it going. I then decided to...

Freecome DVD RW Recorder USB 2.0
Advantages: ummmmm
Disadvantages: Doesn't work very well, slow, intermitently recognises disks, poor back up service, need I go on?
...I ordered my Freecom DVD Recorder LS USB 2.0 after my CD/DVD drive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task that previously took about 30 minutes, this recorder produced a disc that no dvd player in my home recognised (and I have 4). I found the user interface very unfriendly and it simply didn't work. Needles to say, I'll be getting a refund!...

Seagate External Hard Drive 120GB
Advantages: Great invention, reasonable price, large capacity
Disadvantages: Bulky, noisy
...I store a lot of photos, music and documents on my laptop and was finding I was needing to delete documents or put things on cds to enable me to save more data on my laptop. This was getting to be a pain, so I took a trip to PC World to see what options there were. I spoke to an advisor and on special offer was this Seagate External Hard drive, instead of the RRP of £120 I got this hard drive for £70. I thought it would be really useful and this has proved true. The hard drive also came with a 1 year guarenteed warranty.
The hard drive is grey and black and looks quite bulky, especially when plugged into a laptop. It has a USB cable which connects into the USB port in your computer or laptop and a cable which is plugged into the mains. When the hard drive is on, a small green light is displayed on the top. The hard drive is...
