Easy to install USB 2.0 PCI card
Advantages: Easy to install
Disadvantages: None
...I have bought this PCI card a week ago.
Reason: I have got a MSI K7T266Pro2 motherboard that only offer USB1.1 ports (1.5Mbytes/s maximum transfer rate).
Since I have got devices that uses USB2.0 and without breaking my piggy bank to upgrade my computer, the most economical way is to install a PCI card that offers USB2.0 connections (up to 480Mbits/s or 60Mbytes/s, 40X faster than USB1.1) for 1 internal port and 4 external ports.
Before you buy a USB2.0 PCI card, make sure that your motherboard got version 2.2 PCI slots which are USB2.0 compatible.
If your motherboard hasn't got version 2.2 PCI slots or higher, don't bother. You need a motherboard upgrade.
Also, your operating system needs to be windows 2000 service pack 4 or windows XP which provides appropriate drivers to support USB2.0. For the other operation systems...

USB Card Reader With Free 1GB SD Card
Advantages: 9 in 1 card reader, 1GB SD card, Compact design
Disadvantages: None
...The Kingston MobileLite 9-in-1 Card Reader is the only device you need to store, transfer and read data on any USB enabled device. As I use a variety of flash cards for mobile phone, digital camera and camcorder.
This card reader is designed with a USB 2.0 connector which is ideal to connect via you PC or laptop. It has memory expansion slots that support nine different types of SD and MMC flash memory cards. It also comes with a 1 GB SD memory card for free, what more would you want.
This device is called mobile for a reason, as its small and compact it's ideal to take with you anywhere. You won't find a smaller more compact card reader on the market which carries a respectable name as Kingston. I have another card reader which I use for my PC, I bought this because it was cheap and had free 1GB SD memory card with it. I use this...

Belkin Will Read All Your Cards
Advantages: 15 in 1 Card Reader & Writer, Small & Compact, Fast USB 2.0 & Very Easy To Use
Disadvantages: None
...The Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 15-in-1 Media Reader and Writer lets you simply drag and drop images, music and basically any files or folders to your computer from your PDA or handheld, MP3 player, digital camera, or other device which takes any of the 15 types of storage cards. This makes it very simple and easy to transfer media from one place to another, this is the reason I bought this device.
You can edit and store your files at transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps which is 40 times faster than USB 1.1 media readers. This Media Reader & Writer lets you transfer files from one media card to another and transfer files from all four media cards simultaneously. It features four dedicated slots for all popular types of media which are:
1- XD Picture Card
2- CompactFlash I
3- CompactFlash II
4- SmartMedia
5- Secure Digital
6- Mini...

Hammering home the advantage
Advantages: easy to use, lightweight, wide range of supported memory card formats, useful freebie software included
Disadvantages: none
...a memory card reader.
The advantages of the Hama 9 in 1 system are various. Firstly, as it only takes up one USB slot and can be removed when not in use you don't have to worry about connection cables ? it uses a standard USB connection, with the cable for connecting the card reader supplied. Transfer rates are quicker using the card reader than is often the case from digital cameras, and of course there is also no problem of batteries needing to be charged to access the cards in the camera.
As far as USB goes it is a USB 2.0 device, which is quicker than USB 1.1, but the device is backwardly compatible. Windows XP does tell you if you connect it to a USB 1.1 port that you could get higher speeds connecting to a USB 2.0 port if you have one. There are no drivers to install ? it presupposed that you are using Windows 98SE or later (i...

The black box
Advantages: Simple, effective, small, many more
Disadvantages: Not as cheap as others
...***** Newlink USB 2.0 7 in 1 Card Reader/Writer *****
I'm not great with technology - I can do things but it has to be simple, consistent and woe betide the electrical object should it break down.
Luckily this is the easiest piece of equipment so I'll continue to love it.
***** What's it do? *****
This is a device that you plug into your usb port in your computer. You then place your memory card/s into the designated slot on the Newlink reader and hey presto your memory card can then be read by your computer. There's no messing about loading software to recognise each different card or device since you're using the same one each time.
Let me explain:
I've got a sony ericsson phone with a usb connection - should I want to transfer photos from that I've to connect and reload the software which seems to take forever. Instead...

Freecome DVD RW Recorder USB 2.0
Advantages: ummmmm
Disadvantages: Doesn't work very well, slow, intermitently recognises disks, poor back up service, need I go on?
...I ordered my Freecom DVD Recorder LS USB 2.0 after my CD/DVD drive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task that previously took about 30 minutes, this recorder produced a disc that no dvd player in my home recognised (and I have 4). I found the user interface very unfriendly and it simply didn't work. Needles to say, I'll be getting a refund!...

Trust my Card Reader
Advantages: reliable, USB2, vista compat, 42 different formats, lively lighty up bits
Disadvantages: bit boring to look at
...I bought this card reader at that famous hit-tech computer store ;) Tesco. So I didn't expect that much especially at the price but it was going to be better than my ultra cheap no name card reader it replaced.
I've been using this card reader now for about 9 months. It cost £9.00 when I bought it so I didn't expect too much. But it surpassed my expectations and has beaten off my attempts to replace it with newer more modern units (usually ones advertising it will read 99 different card types and ones which are much much prettier).
The Trust EasyConnect Card Reader is a USB 2 device which does its job without fuss or fault. It accepts cards via the front panel or the back panel and handles (amongst othersCompact Flash, Mini Drive, SMC, XD (for Fuji and Olympus), MS, MMC, and SD cards. Basically, if you have a memory card for your...

Belkin Powered Hi-Speed USB 2.0 7-port Hub
Advantages: Fast USB 2 Hub, Ports well spaced out
Disadvantages: Only for Desktop PC's really, Must have adequate PSU
...It should first be stated that this product is intended for use with a desktop computer and indeed it would only be practical to use it in such a manner.
The hub comes with an AC adapter which has a good length cable to reach the mains socket. A USB cable is also included to connect the hub to your computer. The hubs cannot function without the AC power.
There is nothing more frustrating than ports or sockets being too close together, meaning that large or bulky adapters or plugs can't fit in next to each other. This problem is avoided by the Belkin 7-port hub as the ports are well spaced out with four on one side and three on the other. There is an indicator light for each port to indicate whether it is working or not (on or off). There is no switch to turn off the hub - this would have to be done by disconnecting it from...

Bet you didn't know you needed one of these.
Advantages: small, quick, cheap, does the job
Disadvantages: none that I know of
...the computer that will need anything extra installed.
Are you with me so far? What this means, is that if I want to transfer photos from my camera to my laptop, I can't do it without an application to IT helpdesk in triplicate, a three week wait and a £25 call out charge on my cost centre.
So the solution they proposed was the Belkin gizmo - to give it its full name the 'High speed USB 2.0 15-in-1 Media Reader and Writer'.
What is it?
***********
It's a little box with four differently shaped slots in the front and a cable running out the back with a USB fixture on the end. You just plug it into your USB port on your computer, put your memory card from your camera into the appropriate slot and 'hey presto' download/upload your photos and transfer the files. Dead simple. Presumably, you can also use it to put photos back onto your stick as...

Jessops USB Smartmedia Card reader - Serial Killer
Advantages: Upload Speed, Increased Battery Life
Disadvantages: None
...I've been putting up with slow upload on my Olympus C2020Z digital camera for over a year, but when I got a 32Mb card it was painfully slow - like watching paint dry. So I finally bought a Jessops USB Smartmedia Card Reader and it's great.
The installation on a Windows 98 PC is simple, the card comes with a CD with the appropriate drivers, and has bundled Piccolo thumbnail software for viewing and sending files to Jessops over the internet for printing, though I've not tried that service yet.
The USB Card reader is powered via the USB port, and comes with an extension cable which makes it easy to connect to a desktop PC. Once installed and with a Smartmedia card inserted, it appears as a new removable drive. Piccolo will automatically catalogue all your pictures on your PC, and a thumbnail viewer will launch. I close them down...
