Wester Digital External Hard Drive 80GB USB 2.0
Review of Western Digital Essential External Hard Drive USB 2.0 80 GB by
blackhawk204
Advantages: Portable, easy to use, never failed on me yet!
Disadvantages: Perhaps only the disc size, but it has taken me 2 years to fill it!
...Wester Digital, a respected brand name, and i agree!
I have owned the unit now for around 2 years, and have 0 problems. My internal hard drive has died on me twice but my external one, never!
This 80gb HDD is perfect for storing large files, home movies, photo albums, music etc. It's ideal when transfering data from one place to another, simply unplug it, plug it in elsehwre and hey presto!
It supports drag & drop so moving files couldn't be easier.
Standard power adpater with 3-pin plug, and USB 2.0 connection to your pc, mac, server etc.
It is easily recognised by each operating system and i have yet to find one that doesn't support the unit. Plug it in, wait around 30secs and it's up and running.
Can be stored horizontally, and if you have 3 like me, you can stack them perfectly, or store them vertically...

Creative Nomad Jukebox 60GB version
Review of Creative Jukebox Zen Xtra 60 GB by
damionh
Advantages: Size of Hard Drive and Ease of use
Disadvantages: No Radio
...Having researched many of the mp3 players and jukeboxes out there, having tried and tested the mainstream ipod and other smaller mp3 players, i finally settled on this little beauty.
The version i finally settled on was the 60GB version which it is claimed using the average can hold 13,333 songs, but remember thats only as long as your bitrate and sample rate are at a particular strength. The player can hold many more or many less depending on the quality of your mp3 tracks.
Doubling up as an external USB 2.0 hard drive, this nifty little player sits neatly in the pocket and provides up to 14 hours (quoted manufacturers battery life time) of skip free mp3 music.
The music on the player can easily be sorted using Playlists or is automatically sorted and accessed at a press of the button\scroller into Albums, Genres and Artists...

Fantastic little drive, a little gem
Review of Western Digital Passport WDXML600UE 60 GB by
fatboyslim
Advantages: Quiet, fast, very portable, large amount of storage
Disadvantages: NONE
...I purchased one of these so that I had a large amount of backup space for various things that I have on my desktop PC and also to transport files etc between my PC and a friends PC. I paided £69 for a 60GB version of this drive, you can get cheaper drives but Western Digital are top quality ,the drive in my PC is a Western Digital and its always been very reliable, and like anything in life, you only get what you pay for, these very portable drives do work out a bit more expensive than the larger sized external hard drives.
This external hard disc drive comes with a USB cable which is around 18 inches in length, this drive makes use of the high speed USB 2, but you can use it if you have USB 1, but the drive will be slower in operation. The drive feels very solidly built, and the base of the drive is incased in a thick rubber...

Freecom 400GB external USB Hard drive
Review of Freecom Hard Drive Hard drive 400 GB by
ilaskey
Advantages: Fast, high capacity storage. Well built, looks good. 2 year warranty, No fan.
Disadvantages: No fan.
...Freecom before as they've always looked a bit cheap and nasty so this would be an interesting experience. The box did feel reassuringly heavy though, a good start.
###############
# What's in the Box?
###############
Apart from the drive, the box contained a small light external PSU, a USB lead and a CD with some backup software.
The case is made of extremly solid and heavy aluminium with a silver plastic front piece with a sexy blue '400GB' light (yes, you can have sexy lights. Really.) at the front just to prove how big it was. The finish is excellent and I have to say, if this is anything to go by, I'm converted to Freecom. Unlike the picture here, my unit has the aluminium finished in matt black which looks really nice on top of my black PC. It's also surprisingly compact - not that much bigger than a hard drive at 20x11.5x4 cms...

VAST, RELIABLE STORAGE - QDISK
Review of Archos QDisk Hard drive 60 GB by
janemenagh
Advantages: FAST, RELIABLE, AND SECURE WITH LOADS OF SPACE.
Disadvantages: COMES WITH VERY SHORT USB CABLE.
...I purchased my Archos QDISK about 12 months ago from a well known TV Shopping Channel, since then its price has fallen somewhat.
This portable hard drive requires no driver for Windows XP or Windows 2000/ME. You simply plug the USB cable into your PC and away you go, it acts just as your local hard drive in that it appears as a Hard Disk Drive with a drive letter when you go to "My Computer".
You can store absolutely anything on this portable hard drive and it seems as though you never run out of space, I am yet to use half of the 60 Gigabytes because there are no operating system files etc.
The QDISK is also great for laptop computer users as it can fit into a laptop case, depending on your case size. However you will probably need some means of strapping to keep it secure.
I take my QDISK on Holiday with my laptop...

A very reliable storage device
Review of LaCie Mobile Hard Drive Design by F.A. Porsche USB 2.0 60 GB by
alimason
Advantages: reliable, quick to use
Disadvantages: A bit large for day to day use
...I have had this hard-drive for a far while now and i must say that i have been very happy with it. It isn't anything special and there aren't really any advantages over other portable hard-drives. However it's main asset is it's reliabilty.
This relaiblity is what makes me reccommend this hard-drive to potential buyers. For me it is better to have a storage device that will work everytime you connect it to the computer rather than something flashy which looks stylish - not to say that the lacie is hideous.
In terms of performance the lacie ticks all the boxes again. It is quickly found by the computer as soo as its connected and then its very easy to find in the 'My Computer' folder. Conncetion is done by either/both wires which are both USB compatible, on older computers i found i had to connect both wires but on my relatively...

Best external USB hard drive.
Review of Freecom Hard Drive Hard drive 500 GB by
ruggero
Advantages: Fast, super-stylish and near-silent.
Disadvantages: Difficult to detect activity.
...I have owned this drive for a few months and have found it to be excellent. But I disagree with a previous review in several areas.
This is the most stylish external hard drive I have seen. It is also one of the cheapest per GB, currently available for just £93 at Misco.co.uk, for example.
It works with Macs and PCs and is almost silent. It comes with a USB cable and a driver CD for old Windows operating systems. The external design is superb minimalism and looks like it could have been designed by Apple themselves. The case is all aluminium except the front and back. The front face is black except for the capacity indicator of ‘500GB’ which lights up in blue and flickers during activity. The rear has the power and USB ports and a small power switch.
The 500GB box value translates to 465GB under Windows due to the differing ways...

External Hard Drive Fun
Review of Archos ARCDisk Hard Drive USB Key 4 GB by
burns2007
Advantages: Size, Easy to Use, Quick, Simple
Disadvantages: Could be a little bigger in capacity
...from the device.
Width - 4.8cm
Depth - 4.4cm
Height - 1.4cm
Weight - 40g
Once again this like some of the flash drives that are going around at the moment this hard drive is also plug and play with most operating systems however encase it doesn't install automatically a driver is included in the package but I haven't really had to use this very often at all unless your using an old operating system like Windows 98 which was well before this time of hard drive or portable device.
Specifications
*****************
Capacity - 4GB
Interface - USB 2.0
OS Required - Apple MacOS X 10.2.4 or later, Microsoft Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP/VISTA
System Requirements - 64MB RAM
Conclusion
**************
I would definitely recommend this external hard drive to anyone that need to carry files around with them for things like work purposes...

IOMEGA 500GB EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE
Review of Iomega Desktop Hard Drive Value Series Hard drive 500 GB by
mrjwood
Advantages: Easy installation, looks good, ease of use
Disadvantages: None found
...I've bought two of these drives now and am very impressed. On opening the box you'll find the following: The drive itself, power supply, USB cable and an instruction leaflet.
The drive feels solid and well built, although the aluminium case does have some sharp edges near the front where it joins the plastic bezel.
The drive comes formatted to FAT32, but this is easily changed to NTFS.
Being a curious sort, I took one apart to find out the manufacturer of the actual drive inside and was happy to find a Seagate Barracuda, not the bottom of the range drive I was expecting!
Installation under Windows XP/Vista is a doddle, just plug in the power cable, plug in the USB cable, switch it on and it's automatically detected and ready to go.
In use, both drives have proved very reliable, and although transfer speeds over USB...
