A truly portable data carrier with MP3 option
Review of SanDisk Cruzer Micro - USB flash drive - 512 MB by
timboid
Advantages: Most compact in its class, fast data transfer, funky looks, MP3 option
Disadvantages: Easy to misplace!
...::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: NOTE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
This is a review for the SanDisk Cruzer MICRO flash drive, not the Cruzer MINI.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
With the decline in use (and suspect reliability) of that square pancake, the floppy disk, and the rise and rise of USB-based peripherals, it was only a matter of months before another alternative method of data transportation started to hit the market.
The USB flash drive was, and still is, the perfect gadget to fulfill that role. Being more capacious (in the data sense), more robust, more portable and more reliable (due to solid state storage - i.e. no moving parts) than its 3.5" predecessor, it has quickly superceded floppy disk...

At last,a low price KVM switch with a USB platform
Review of Belkin OmniView SOHO Series 4-Port USB KVM Switch with Audio - KVM / audio switch - 4 ports by
coppinpr
Advantages: easdy to use,USB connections,up to 4 pc's
Disadvantages: not pretty,
...two).Switching between pc's is just a keystoke and its quite strange at first to instantly move between one display/audio/input and another.
This belkin switch is a big improvement on previous models but beware when buying, several Belkin KVM's have almost the same model numbers and names, make sure you get the USB model, as usual with Belkin old models hang around for ages especially when buying on line and you can easy end up with an old ps2 model some dealer is trying to off load to make way for the new style. This is not helped by the price structure,an old style switch can often come up at a hight price than the new one so take care.
Bottom line is,as usual with Belkin the product will do what is says it will and in this case better than before,if you use more than one pc on a regular basis then this is a must have...

Excellent portable music player
Review of iAUDIO X5L by
ianopolis
Advantages: UMS, good sound quality, very user friendly, good customer support
Disadvantages: relatively common phone jack problem, screen is realistically too small for movies and pictures
...I bought the iAudio X5L for a few main reasons, based on various reviews I'd found from trawling the internet. These were:
- it connects to a computer as a Universal Mass Storage device, meaning none of your annoying iPod/Sony/whatever identification issues. It's just an external hard drive that plays your music, pictures, videos, records, etc. etc.
- which leads me to the second reason: functionality. Its menus may not look pretty but it's dead easy to use, and can playback music in just about any format (including OGG and FLAC, for example, as well as your basics). Also can view movies, pictures, and text files, and you can record sound directly onto it.
- good sound quality may not be so important for a portable music player, but it's there anyway.
- ridiculously long battery life (on the X5L).
Since buying it I've also found...

Extreme USB pocket drive (for toppit users?)
Review of Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 - storage enclosure by
cport80
Advantages: Fast & Versatile
Disadvantages: Slightly large
...Everyone seems to have a tiny pocket USB drive these days, however they suffer from limited capacity and can be quite slow (especially the older USB1 type). Belkin realise there's a good market to be tapped here... via their USB2 hard drive caddy.
I can't remember the last time I was this impressed with a piece of kit. Thanks to a £20 voucher from Powergen, I picked this drive bay up for £29.99 from PC world. In went an old fujitsu 10MB drive and now it's a fantastic portable (just) storage solution.
The bay itself can accomodate both 3.5 and 5.25 inch drives to give you an idea of how big it is. Power is supplied via a normal 6A mains lead (supplied) which is identical to your computer power lead (so no problem replacing if you lose it). The drive connector inside is a standard 40-pin IDE ribbon and there's also an analog audio...

Pro Studio in your back pocket!!
Review of M-Audio Transit USB by
reviewdevil147
Advantages: supports high sample rates; ADAT i/o capabilities; too many
Disadvantages: no hardware monitoring
...FS) you will have an eight track portable recording studio... and I am definitely taking this with me when I go abroad.
*****************************************
Sample Rate: the number of audio samples taken per second (expressed in Hertz). i.e. 44.1kHz = 44100 samples per second
Bit depth: relates to the dynamic range of each sample. i.e. 16-bit = 98.08dB(FS), 24-bit = 146.24dB(FS)
dBFS = decibel Full Scale (referring to digital levels, in 16-bit 0dBFS would be the loudest/peak point and 98.08dBFS the quietest)
DAW = Digital Audio Workstation. i.e. Logic Pro 8.
*****************************************************************
It is a tiny little work of wonders, and in my opinion much better than the Digidesign MBox Micro because it gives you so much more to work with. The Mbox Micro only gives you editing options, only...

A true audio-portable revolution
Review of Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 20 GB by
netsoldier
Advantages: A formidable capacity of 20Go; a function coder allowing to record anything, anywhere and anyhow!! And heard well, there is a dictaphone!
Disadvantages: Dimensions and a weight which remain "significant all the same"; a considerable price; an autonomy which could be more significant; accés Tuner FM or AM; and then here... I believe in can ready that one with fact the turn!!
...but for one of the florets of the portable audio technology of XXIIéme century it remains rather "imposing nevertheless"!! Too bad. Practical side, the AJR 20Go holds perfectly in a pocket [ except if you are un(e) fan(e) moulding trousers which tighten you the buttocks until dead follows from there!! ] Moreover, the blue satchel provides is reliable with the belt and thus makes it possible for the followers of the tight trousers this to walk at ease with their Mp3 walkman in all peace and any discretion!! Alléloullia
Idem that previously: the weight is not one of its assets major... it is enough consequent for a recent walkman but remains accessible for a reader Mp3. Re-damage. For admirateurs of the light behaviours [ I hears the bare minimum or almost: very short shorts, a Tee-shirt or a shirt, etc ], the transport of the AJR 20Go...

A TV TV!
Review of Hauppauge WinTV USB by
ben-lloyd
Advantages: Portable(ish), cheap, good value
Disadvantages: Needs an external aerial, viewing software is buggy
...
The Unit - Overview & Appearance
Built by probably the best known PC TV tuner producer, the Hauppauge WinTV USB is essentially a glasses-case sized box of magic which allows you to transform your PC or laptop into a TV.. Executed in translucent turquoise plastic, the unit features a 2 foot long USB lead at one end for connection to your computer and a standard coaxial port for connection to an external aerial at the other. On the side of the box are three further ports; two 3.5mm audio jacks for connecting external audio sources and an S-Video port for connecting a video recorder or DVD player or the like. There is also the mandatory red LED to indicate power set into the plastic on the upper face of the unit.

Portable storage with no limits.
Review of Freecom Classic Mobile 2.5" Hard Drive USB-2 120 GB by
Mr_Gamgee
Advantages: Small, easy to use, upgradable, decently priced
Disadvantages: Check - You may need 2 USB ports
...I bought one of these devices a couple of years ago and it worked excellently. I was very satisfied with the ease of use - you simply plug in the wires and away you go. No need for driver installation etc (on modern operating systems). I used it for over a year for photography and general backup with no problems at all.
Essentially, the Freecom device is simply a laptop drive in a little black box. This is good because laptop hard drives are built with portability in mind. So when I wanted to upgrade the hard drive in my laptop the Freecom was easily unscrewed and upgraded too (bear in mind mine was out of warranty at this stage).
----- First Impressions -----
First impressions were good. To have all that storage space in something small and portable was great. The unit is made of metal so has a decent feel to it although I...

In Kingston town.. the place I long to USB
Review of Kingston DataTraveler 100 - USB flash drive - 4 GB by
1st2thebar
Advantages: 4 GB of data storage
Disadvantages: lacks innovation in design
...new heights - The 4.34 Bn dollar sales is the highest attained in its 20-year history -
-I welcome you to the Data Traveler 100 USB Flash Drive 4 GB (DT100)
- What is an USB? -
USB - Stands for Universal Serial Bus - This is a standard port for computer components to be connected using a single standardised interface socket. Every computer has these ports to improve plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be connected and disconnected without restarting the computer, therefore saving time and losing any information through the rebooting process. USB ports are used by external devices such as digital camera's, printers, hubs, extra storage/CD/DVD drives etc.
- The portable USB Flash Drive 4GB -
The external portable drive is also known as a key or a stick as seen above in the title. The length is 2 inches long...
