Simple, Basic, Easy-to-Use Card Reader
Review of SanDisk ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer by
kamnet
Advantages: Simple, basic, USB 2.0 High-Speed port is FAST!
Disadvantages: C'mon, what do you expect out of a card reader, a genie?!?
...who gave me $18 worth of those, and I immediately knew what I wanted. I wanted an external USB 2.0 media reader to make my experience sing.
The media reader I settled on was a SanDisk SD/MMC USB 2.0 Media Card Reader. It was on special for $19.95 S/H. After applying my free bucks, I ended up paying about $9 for it to be shipped to my home over Christmas. I knew I wouldn't get it before Christmas, but I was very excited nontheless to receive it.
It's a basic, no-frills media reader. You hook it up via your USB port. If you run WinME/2K/XP or MacOS 9/X or Linux then this thing will instantly configure for you, it's ready to rock. If you run Win98/98SE (Win95b/c has inadequate and incomplete USB support, Win95a & NT has NO support), then you need to install the included driver, which takes just seconds. After that, you just stick...

USB Card Reader With Free 1GB SD Card
Review of Kingston MobileLite 9-in-1 Reader by
Surj1
Advantages: 9 in 1 card reader, 1GB SD card, Compact design
Disadvantages: None
...The Kingston MobileLite 9-in-1 Card Reader is the only device you need to store, transfer and read data on any USB enabled device. As I use a variety of flash cards for mobile phone, digital camera and camcorder.
This card reader is designed with a USB 2.0 connector which is ideal to connect via you PC or laptop. It has memory expansion slots that support nine different types of SD and MMC flash memory cards. It also comes with a 1 GB SD memory card for free, what more would you want.
This device is called mobile for a reason, as its small and compact it's ideal to take with you anywhere. You won't find a smaller more compact card reader on the market which carries a respectable name as Kingston. I have another card reader which I use for my PC, I bought this because it was cheap and had free 1GB SD memory card with it. I use...

Jessops USB Smartmedia Card reader - Serial Killer
Review of Memory Card Readers by
SimonM
Advantages: Upload Speed, Increased Battery Life
Disadvantages: None
...I've been putting up with slow upload on my Olympus C2020Z digital camera for over a year, but when I got a 32Mb card it was painfully slow - like watching paint dry. So I finally bought a Jessops USB Smartmedia Card Reader and it's great.
The installation on a Windows 98 PC is simple, the card comes with a CD with the appropriate drivers, and has bundled Piccolo thumbnail software for viewing and sending files to Jessops over the internet for printing, though I've not tried that service yet.
The USB Card reader is powered via the USB port, and comes with an extension cable which makes it easy to connect to a desktop PC. Once installed and with a Smartmedia card inserted, it appears as a new removable drive. Piccolo will automatically catalogue all your pictures on your PC, and a thumbnail viewer will launch. I close them down...

Trust my Card Reader
Review of Trust EasyConnect 42-in-1 USB2 Card Reader CR-1420p by
fightgear
Advantages: reliable, USB2, vista compat, 42 different formats, lively lighty up bits
Disadvantages: bit boring to look at
...I bought this card reader at that famous hit-tech computer store ;) Tesco. So I didn't expect that much especially at the price but it was going to be better than my ultra cheap no name card reader it replaced.
I've been using this card reader now for about 9 months. It cost £9.00 when I bought it so I didn't expect too much. But it surpassed my expectations and has beaten off my attempts to replace it with newer more modern units (usually ones advertising it will read 99 different card types and ones which are much much prettier).
The Trust EasyConnect Card Reader is a USB 2 device which does its job without fuss or fault. It accepts cards via the front panel or the back panel and handles (amongst othersCompact Flash, Mini Drive, SMC, XD (for Fuji and Olympus), MS, MMC, and SD cards. Basically, if you have a memory card for your...

A Card Reader Don't Arf Save Yer Batteries
Review of Sandisk Imagemate compact flash USB reader/writer by
BNibbles
Advantages: One bit of kit allows both mp3 player and camera to upload/download
Disadvantages: Oh no, there goes my last USB port!
...READER.
This is a small, rather mouse-like shell, with a slot to take the CF2-shaped modules, including IBM Microdrives.
It needs no external power source and takes up one USB port on your PC. Since it can accept the memory both for my camera and my mp3 player, it can become a permanent fixture, without any further scrambling behind the machine (until the next gadget, that is!).
Because this also means that my MP3 player now only gets used for playing music, the batteries last longer.
All that is needed in the case of music downloads or photo uploads is that I remove the module from the device in question and pop it into the slot on the reader.
The driver software ensure that when a module (CF2 or IBM) is inserted, the PC sees it as a removable drive, allowing the transfer of files through Windows Explorer or My Computer...

Reading Between the Lines...
Review of Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 15-in-1 Media Reader & Writer Card reader by
Radical-Machine
Advantages: Good Looking, Lots of options
Disadvantages: Could be a touch cheaper...
....
*********************************************************
But why not just transfer using the camera over USB?
*********************************************************
Up to this point, it's why I haven't bought a card reader - what's the point when you can just hook up your camera and go? Well, now we all have our own cards, it's become simpler to leave the camera in our living area and just pop in our own card when we're taking it out. As the camera now remains in the living area (OK, I'm being pretentious: the lounge), I can just pop out the card and click it into the card reader when I'm ready to upload the day's snappings!
Also, it's more convenient, as the card reader remains permanently plugged into a USB port and sits unassumingly on my desk (see attached photo!) All I do is plug a card into the right slot and my computer sees it. No fiddling about round the back with USB leads...
