...*~*~Introduction~*~* This review is based on my experience of using the Vauxhall Astra each week for regular motorway journeys down South every week for work. Advantages: goodlooking, sexy, excellent ride ;-)

...not quite so positive. The Rover wins. Gearbox and Clutch. The Rover box is five speed, it is slick and easy to use and the clutch is easy to use but is quite heavy to use, however the gearbox falls down in use due to its inability to go straight into reverse gear from a forward gear. Rover recommends that you wait 20 seconds before engaging reverse gear after coming to a halt. Now that?s quite a wait in traffic believe me. Try engaging it any sooner and unless you are lucky you will get a violent grating noise, which can do a lot of damage over a period of time. The Astra suffers no such problems but the gear change is not quite so slick. The gear change seems to drag, whether or not this is unique to this particular car I don?t know. The clutch is as light as a feather but it has a very high biting point, which has taken me...

Advantages: Safety ,Comfort reasonably low insurance and running costs
Disadvantages: Rear folding split seat does not fold flat Space save wheel spare of limited use

...I have owned this car for just over 12 months and was bought with 17K on the clock. It is a 1.6 v developing a useful 105bhp and can deliver a top speed of 115mph (though not on UK roads) from the 1598cc engine with a 5 speed manual transmission and runs on unleaded fuel which is held in a 52L tank The body shape is a 5 door hatch and is solidly built which is fairly standard for the Vauxhall range it is this combined with the abs braking system and in my version six airbags which help contribute to its excellent NCAPS 5 star rating The driving position is comfortable the seats are firm and offer good support the driving seat is adjustable for height and backrest position. I didn't think i'd like it as i'd seen pictures and wasn't keen on the back end... thought it looked a little like a Megan... and i hate those cars! ...What can I say about the Vauxhall Astra estate? : Wonderfull, fantastic a stunning little car with the build quality of a Volvo. From the moment you get in and hear that sound of the solid door clunk as it closes you know you're in a good car. This car has fantastic build quality for medium range family car everything on the car is built to last. Comfort is good to as the seats are strong and comfortable and very adjustable. I have the automatic version and it really is a pleasure to drive,its smooth,and responsive when you need to put your foot down and is has to be said it's no slouch, when that kick down, kicks in, you start movin'! Astra-nomical? Not really!

Advantages: Cheap insurance, handling, speed
Disadvantages: ride comfort, fuel economy

...it is bearable. The kick down feature on the accelerator pedal is overkill and drops the gears and revs far too high. This is not a sports car like the VXR so it shouldn't really be treated like one unless you are going to replace it in 3 months! Fuel Economy and Costs The Good Only on insurance, 3 of us are insured on this car for about £400 so not bad. Should be a good car for young drivers who want a bit of oomph with their drive! Falls under the cheaper tax bands as well The Bad Fuel Economy is terrible for this type of car. Bearing in mind it's a 1.8 automatic, the guage drops very quickly and I'd be surprised if I got 250 miles on a tank. To put this into perspective, I used to have a Seat Leon 1.8 turbo Cupra manual producing 180bhp and the fuel econmy was vastly better than the Astra...

Advantages: Air conditioning as standard; Remote central locking; Power assisted steering; electric front windows, large boot/trunk space; room for three across the back with s/belts; no middle headrest so better visibility
Disadvantages: No electric wing mirror option; not a great range of colours available or trims.

...I have just ordered a new Astra 1/6i Club from my local dealership. Having trawled around other car dealers, it was a pleasure to visit the Vauxhall dealer, who was friendly and courteous and offered advice. He sat down with me and helped me choose the best value for money regarding specifications - electric sunroof; ABS; etc On the test drive, the car was light to manouevre, with good visibility and the gears were much easier than my older Astra. The shape is similar to a 1990's Ford Escort, but still different from most of the new cars on the road. The boot/trunk is large enough to fill with the supermarket shop for a family of 5/6 or with family sized suitcases. 10.3.03 - I have now taken delivery of the car - yippee. Advantages: Space age looks (New Model 2004) Great Engine. Quality interior. Equipment

At around 1350kg unladen, this is a heavy, modern car so 100bhp, it is not going to give it brilliant performance away from the traffic lights, although as already mentioned that 177lbs ft torque should prove very useful. Let us take to the driver's seat and find out. Firstly before you can give of your best as a driver, or come to that obtain the best from a car you need to find a comfortable driving position.
