Advantages: compact, light, good features, reasonably priced Disadvantages: colours can appear dull, especially in low light conditions
...I recently went in search of a digital camera that I will not hesitate to take along with me every time I go out. My current DSLR tends to be left behind a lot, as my back is finally rebelling after years of abuse!
Two reasons for looking at a compact, rather than a lighter, newer SLR is that until manufacturers have solved the dust problem with SLR, I will stay away from the DSLR market (a problem not much talked about but which is extremely common!)
Before getting on to the review of the Olympus SP-560 UZ, let me give this advice to anyone considering treating themselves this Christmas: buy a compact, as the fixed lens does not allow particles of dust to get onto the CCD, unlike with SLR, a very costly problem!
So, there I went, in search of a potential replacement for my DSLR; the first camera I checked out was the...

Review of Olympus SP-560 UZ
Advantages: Good features and functions and of course a long zoom. Disadvantages: Poor image qulaity at high zoom and terrible battery life amongst others.
...completely unnoticeable, they are now fighting over who has the longest zoom.
With DSLR`s you simply buy the zoom lens you choose to put on it and this can leave basically any option open to you as long as you have the funds but with compacts or bridge cameras you are stuck with the built in zoom the lens has. We have recently been watching the zoom functions go up like the megapixels did, the typical compact used to have a 3x optical zoom which has gone up to 5x and the bridge cameras used to have around a 7x optical zoom which in some units has climbed to an impressive 18x, now welcome the Olympus SP-590 UZ with its staggering 26x optical zoom.
To put this into perspective you are talking about a range of 26-676mm with a single lens, to buy lens`s for a DSLR to cover this type of range you would realistically be looking at two or as I...

Review of Olympus SP-590 UZ
Advantages: Incredible zoom, macro mode and very easy to use Disadvantages: No rechargeable batteries and uninspiring LCD screen.
...As I opened the box the first thing that struck me was how small this camera is. Expecting something almost the size of an slr, I was pleasantly surprised. This fits comfortably in my hands and by no means needs the neck strap provided with it.
Why did I buy this?
Well, the zoom primarily. At 20x optical zoom, giving an equivalent of 26-520mm this was far cheaper than buying lenses to fit my dslr covering this zoom range. The zoom range itself is incredible. Although the sp590 uz boasts a 26x optical zoom, for all intensive purposes the 20x provided by the sp570 is more than enough for the ordinary shooter, or even a would be paparazzi. Performance at the end of the telephoto range (full zoom) wasn't great, but still perfectly usable. Image quality in general is very impressive for a non dslr camera, easily beating any...

Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ
Advantages: I know of no other in its class that offers that zoom range Disadvantages: SP-570 UZ RAW (ORF) Files are unsupported by Photoshop CS3
...Being an 'Oly' fan since the legendary OM1/OM2n film cams of the 60's, the last Olympus digital compact camera I bought was the C-5050UZ (2002) with it's peerless f/1.8 aspherical lens that is among the best cameras of dozens that I've owned since I was a shutterbug in my youth, and later as a professional wedding photographer - 'until death do us part!'
Six years down the track I've developed an interest in bird photography (as distinct from brides) and having switched to digital completely, I bought an SP-570 UZ last week, but returned it for refund within 7 days (as AU consumer protection laws allow).
During my brief possession of the camera I tested it intensively over several days in various shooting and lighting situations at appropriate but variable "MyMode" settings that I had selected. Dawn light landscapes at iso200...

Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ
Advantages: long zoom, high resolution Disadvantages: fails to deliver and very dissapointing
...Upgrading from an existing superzoom, the Sony H2 6MP, 12x optical zoom which was given a highly recommended rating at www.dpreview.com, I was rightly looking for quality and performance in my next camera. I knew I wanted at least 10 megapixels as I wanted to blow up large prints. The 12x zoom on my Sony has been a real boon and has enabled me to take so many shots that would have otherwise been impossible. So I was after at least the same again.
Zoom range is something of a taboo in the digital photography world at the moment. to fit these large zooms in compact cameras like the Olympus SP-570 UZ, a certain amount of quality is lost in the image. But with the 12x Zoom on my Sony, this was hardly noticable and more than compensated with by the increased versatility.
However, the above is not true of the OlympusSP-570 UZ. In short...

Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ
Advantages: Great Quality Images, Price, Features Disadvantages: Have to buy additional accessories to use effectively
...Olympus SP570 UZ 10mp digital camera
Price: £235-£380 (Price runner winner on price - Camerabox limited)
Olympus digital cameras are such a good choice I have had the pleasure of sampling a couple this being one along with the E-510 and again to be honest very similar in deed & the quality of the images is superb so for those of you on a budget (I'm a photographer on a budget (very tight) & this camera is on par with those that cost over a grand - £235 yes please
This is a great camera for both amateur & professional photographers, for those who like quality & variety at a great price then you can't go wrong with this piece of kit which is not only functional but is very easy to use.
You can use this camera straight from the box, it took me about half an hour to become familiar with the many functions & settings but...

Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ
...Unbelievable! This camera is probably the best camera on the market for under £300. 10 Megapixels and an amazing 20x optical zoom - that's right - 20X OPTICAL ZOOM. Stunning clarity both long and short range - seriously breathtaking close ups. With a built-in dual image stabiliser, all blur associated with camera shake is eliminated to give extremely clear images.
Zoom
Unique moments can be caught from anywhere... the range is just class. You virtually become close enough to touch things which are metres away from you. Even when you have zoomed to the max. the pictures are still crystal clear due to the image stabilisation incorporated - therefore can be used for sporting events etc.
Close-ups
The Super Macro mode of the SP-570 UZ allows you to take pictures of things that are only 1cm away.
Look...

Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ
Advantages: Robust, plenty of features Disadvantages: Focusing problems, complicated
..., especially in poor light and/or when on full zoom. Indeed, full zoom is really only worth using in very good lighting conditions. This can be frustrating at times!
And although there are settings for up to 6400 ISO, it's not really worth going above 400 ISO unless you like grainy, noise filled photos ....
Battery life is very good and since it uses AA batteries there's no worry about being away from home for a few days and not being able to replace a dead battery set.
I primarily use the camera for landscape photography in the Scottish hills and have been generally pleased with the results, though I wouldn't say they are always outstanding and certainly not a patch on the results you'd expect from a full SLR. But the SP560uz is a lot cheaper - and lighter - than an SLR (albeit both bigger and heavier than most compact digitals). It...

Review of Olympus SP-560 UZ
Advantages: Great Zoom, Manual Shooting, Range of Shooting Modes Disadvantages: Bulky, Battery Powered
...The Olympus SP-550 UZ has an impressive 18x optical zoom, one of the biggest zooms on a non-SLR camera. Combined with "Dual Image Stabilization" it is very good for taking close-ups without the need for a tri-pod.
The 7.1 megapixels produce high resolution pictures and the camera's ability to shoot in RAW mode allows for extensive manipulation in the editing studio.
The camera can be manipulated to shoot manual photo's, giving far more control than usual on a "point-and-click" digital camera. The aperture values range from f 2.8- f 8.0, and the shutter speeds range from 1/2000-15seconds. There is also a "Bulb" setting which leaves the shutter open for as long as the shutter button is pressed. The ISO can also be changed, with values from 50-5000.
For people who are beginning to expand their digital photography ability the SP-550 has...
Advantages: Superb zoom, Loads of features for price, Records movies with sound. Disadvantages: Option menus not very intuative. Slightly too big to be called 'pocket' sized
...WHY DID I BUY THIS CAMERA?
I had a budget of £250 to buy my first digital camera.
As this was my first purchase I had no idea what to expect for the money and so spent hours reading reviews on the net. I live on a Scottish island and it is not easy touring camera shops trying out the different cameras.
Eventually I narrowed the choice down to the Olympus 765uz. Why? - Excellent value for a 4 megapixel camera with high grade 10x optical zoom lense, highly rated picture quality, and functions/options which were always rated as better than similar offerings by other manufacturers.
I was lucky enough to find a brand new 765uz for sale on ebay and paid £163 but would still have paid the going internet price at the time.
AM I GLAD I BOUGHT THIS CAMERA?
Yes. It is lovely piece of kit. "It does exactly what it says on the tin...
