Advantages: One of all the time great satires, very underrated...with a terrific soundtrack
Disadvantages: many will probably disagree with me when I say it's the one cult film that is better than Rocky Horror

...For those of you who don't remember the novel Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann it became a runaway bestseller in the 1960s, and was eventually adapted to the screen in 1967---and was hailed as one of the decades' worst films. Twentieth Century Fox, who no doubt got quite embarrassed after releasing it, decided to turn to a struggling filmmaker named Russ Meyer, who directed a shocking film in 1966 called FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!, to do a semi-spoof of it. The script was written by---of all people---Roger Ebert and in 1970, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF DOLLS was released and caused a small, but loyal, crowd of fans, and was named by two prominant critics as of the best films of the decade (1968-1978). Advantages: Excellent hard hitting read
Disadvantages: Bit slow to start

...i have read this book twice, it is so good that I have it in what I call my "permenant collection". These are books that i feel are classics, and can be read over and over again. Valley of the Dolls was written in the 1960's. It features themes and issues true to that period of time, glitz and glamour of actors and actresses, sex drugs and rock and roll. It is very cleverly written, spanning over decades, showing the charecters develope and grow(or in some cases self destruct!) and gives the reader a complete picture. She focuses on 3 charecters, Anne, Jennifer and Neely and their subsequent freindships and heartaches. It is slow to start, but once underway becomes unputdownable! It is interesting to see how addictions take over and corrupt the girls, how they come to depend on drugs and adapt their lifestyles. I find... Read review

...'Valley of the Dolls', the atrocious movie based on the outstanding book by Jacqueline Susann is here bundled together with the camp/cult classic 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls', an over the top sex & violence film typical of Russ Meyer. I was first introduced to 'Valley of the Dolls' when I read the novel about two years ago. Not much later this DVD was released and I got to see the film for the first time. And what a travesty it is. Unfortunately everything that made the book so fantastic is missing from this movie, and the characters bear no similarity to themselves in book form. For instance, in the book the main character Anne Wells is a naïve woman from a small town who is too modest and willful to be initially taken in by the glamour of it all, despite constant pleas from all around her due to her natural, stunning... ...Valley of the Dolls is one of those books which you could say describes the common Hollywood/rich people/famous people syndrome : now that you have what you wanted , what do you do? Do some drugs and start drinking and watch your great successful life go down the toilet. And then trying again. As basically this is what this book is about. In a nutshell. The book has 3 main characters - Anne, Jennifer and Neelly and takes place in 1940's - 1960's New York and Hollywood and couple of other places. It's divided into chapters titled with the main characters names so we kind of go back and forth between the girls' lives. ...As I was walking through choices, I found the movie Isn’t She Great, which is a semi-autobiographical account of Jacqueline Susan’s life. She was a failed actress with one hell of a personality, who caused a huge amount of controversy with this her debut novel, Valley of the dolls a no holds bar look into the immensely interesting and not to mentioned drug and sex fueled worlds, of the glamorous lives of the showbiz elite. Plot: I am going to be quite loose on the plot description as I have a tendency to use spoilers to much. Anne Wells has just moved from the sticks to the vibrant and modern city of New York. She has no qualifications and only two friends, but loves it. Advantages: Low in fat, low in food miles, and its organic too!
Disadvantages: Runnier and less tasty than the full fat version
