NLY 300 PIECES WORLDWIDE ALL TRACKS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED - EXCELLENT SOUND QUALITY This release presents a complete never before released 1976 performance by the
Gil Evans Orchestra in Dortmund, Germany, with excellent sound quality. It marks Evans' only known encounter with celebrated reedman Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Other noteworthy soloists on this set include tenor saxophonist George Adams and trumpet player John Faddis. It also contains Kirk's only known version of Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning" and
Gil Evans' only known version of Kirk's "Theme for the Eulipions", but perhaps the most interesting piece is Evans' arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom". Hendrix was scheduled to record with
Gil but died in 1970 before the session. In 1974 Evans recorded a number of Hendrix's songs on
Gil Evans Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix, but "Freedom" wasn't part of the studio album and no other reading by Evans seems to exist apart from this long Dortmund reading. THE
