...I am sure that most of you are familiar with the bright orange, get your sunglasses out, Vax carpet cleaning system. I am now on my second one having bought my first when they were the state of the art vacuum cleaner and launched into the shops some twenty years ago. Now, don?t get me wrong, I am not an obsessive cleaner, but we currently own three hoovers. Interestingly, none of them are actually made by Hoover! When we moved here my Vax gave up the ghost after years of sterling service. It was with a sense of sadness that I hurled it into the huge skip at the council tip! I then bought a Dyson upright cleaner. I do generally prefer an upright cleaner- much easier on the old back! The Dyson has been, for the most part great. Vax the way to do it!

Advantages: Simple to use, inexpensive, great results
Disadvantages: Bulky, heavy machine, difficult to store neatly

Anyone who has lived in such a property will tell you that dust and cobwebs are an occupational hazard. As it is small we bought one of those compact bagless cleaners which turned out to be a real pain in the derriere, it would fall over rather than be dragged around, the capacity was laughable and the bits would fall out of the cupboard every time we opened the door. Vax a Heavy Cleaner

Advantages: very long lead, and a big water tank
Disadvantages: heavy and bulky

...Having a 3 year old, plus 2 cats who love to leave us presents in the living room my carpet really needed a good clean. I decided to borrow my brothers Vax cleaner as it is an upright and my old vax was in the shed and I didn`t want to have to dig it out. He gave me the basic instructions on how to use it but had lost the manual so I had to figure most of it out myself! How did I clean my carpet? Vax - the Virtues and Vexations

Advantages: Great cleaning performance and good value

...the dirt carrier in a far neater arrangement and it is emptied by pulling a dinky little lever which causes the bottom to swing open! The Vax and Dyson offer all the same attachments; the crevice for corners edges and cracks, the dusting brush for delicate areas and skirting boards and the turbo tool. I do not understand the niceties of the latter but apparently it is "air driven" meaning that "the brushbar revolves at high speed" and this "combined with the bristles make it ideal for picking up pet hairs and other dust and debris from stairs, upholstery and car interiors" . I can vouch for the fact it works quite well on upholstery but, having no stairs and no car, I can't comment on its other alleged virtues! ...We initially bought this vacuum cleaner because our old one had developed a rather nasty smell and we'd managed to melt one of the pipes. (Don't ask) This was on offer at our local Argos, and we picked it up for £50 (down from over £100). I'd heard of the Vax brand name and I admit I expected good things from this cleaner. I wasn't disappointed. When you first get the cleaner it is in a large box, and needs putting together. There was one moment of confusion, where I thought we were lacking some screws (they were found partway screwed into the body of the machine), but otherwise, if you read the instructions properly, you should have a problem with putting it together. Advantages: Small, light & powerful. Great cleaning ability. Easy to empty and maintain. Six-year guarantee.
