...I am sure that most of you are familiar with the bright orange, get your sunglasses out, Vax carpet cleaning system. I am now on my second one having bought my first when they were the state of the art vacuum cleaner and launched into the shops some twenty years ago. Now, don?t get me wrong, I am not an obsessive cleaner, but we currently own three hoovers. Interestingly, none of them are actually made by Hoover! When we moved here my Vax gave up the ghost after years of sterling service. It was with a sense of sadness that I hurled it into the huge skip at the council tip! I then bought a Dyson upright cleaner. I do generally prefer an upright cleaner- much easier on the old back! The Dyson has been, for the most part great. Vax the way to do it!

Advantages: Simple to use, inexpensive, great results
Disadvantages: Bulky, heavy machine, difficult to store neatly

...I bought my Vax 6131 back in October 2007 after my old upright vacuum cleaner finally gave up the ghost. I was searching for a new replacement upright vacuum cleaner but after stumbling across the Vax 6131 on special offer I decided a wet and dry vacuum that also shampoos carpets would be really handy, especially with a dog and cat in the house! Vax a Heavy Cleaner

Advantages: very long lead, and a big water tank

...start the vax. Then move the vax back and forward you will see the soap on the carpet, once you have done that release the trigger and move back and forward the carpet so that the dirty water gets sucked up in to the vacuum. At the base of the vax is the dirty water tank, you can actually see the water going into the tank and wow was the water dirty! Also there are 2 beater brushes which groom the pile of the carpet. To empty the tank I pressed the release button then at the same time pulled the tank tab up and it comes forward so that I could then remove the tank and empty the contents. After emptying the contents I rinsed it out with clean water and also checked that filter was not blocked. Vax V006 vacuum cleaner

Advantages: Very powerful cleaner, sturdy.

...This particular model came into our household about two years ago. If I remember, it was an early production model. My wife bought it, after a Dyson fell to pieces. My initial feelings were, that the Vax would be just another reincarnation of the Dyson, but I am pleased to say, 'I was wrong'! After owning a Dyson, the Vax is much more sturdy ,it's construction, although mainly built of plastic, is a very robust machine. VAX V006 TURBOFORCE VACUUM - A1 CLEANER

Advantages: TurboTool stair cleaner
Disadvantages: If the stair cleaner breaks it will cost £35 to replace

It has wheels on the bottom that swivel and is very easy to move around and has a great carrying handle to make it easy to lift up and down stairs. The nosal is a good length.
