Combined DVD Recorder and VCR

Advantages: Seems to do everything the maker claims
Disadvantages: hav'nt found one yet

...I have recently purchased the Toshiba D-VR16SB combo unit, and am initially very pleased with it. It is a neat looking unit, and I found the initial connecting and set up relatively easy.The unit has an auto tune facility to find the terrestial TV channels, and scart connection for satellite, and facilities are there for s video or audio/video cables if required. For DVD recording it has a choice of six modes, giving up toa max of 600 minutes on a 12cm DVD disc, down to the highest quality level of recording, giving 60 mins of very high quality.I have used the recorder on the standard setting, which gives 120 mins at a fairly good quality level. DVD-Recorder with VCR

Advantages: records straight from VHS to DVD, acutally real dual tuner!
Disadvantages: cannot edit unless you use DVD-RAM discs, not freeview

Simple to use combined DVD/VCR

Advantages: Easy to use, quick operation, good quality playback
Disadvantages: Remote control buttons small, front panel display small and basic

...The Samsung DVD-V6700S (UK version) comes in attractive silver and is quite a wide unit as it supports both DVD playing and video tape recording/playing. The unit height is low, giving a slim appearance, but make sure you have room for the width. A good number of digital/analogue I/O (including on the front panel) allows it to be connected in many combinations to other equipment. Video/sound quality is good, including tape recording/playback. The front panel display is small, making it difficult to see from across the room, though there's not much information on it. Remote control buttons are small with the legends difficult to see if your eyesight is not so good. Operation is straightforward though. Disadvantages: You can't stop it, once it has started recording on the timer.

Sony VCR SLVE710 - Not All DVD-R Yet!

Advantages: Reliable, good picture quality, ease of setting up
Disadvantages: none so far

...Those who have read my reviews on other electrical goods may recognise that I have a lot of bias towards Sony and my SLV710 video recorder (one of three I own because I edit my video shots), is no exception. DVD recording has not taken over yet. I have had this machine for about 3 years now and it has not given me a moment's problem and with its auto set-up, it is easy to install. On taking it out of the box, I plugged in the aerial lead to the aerial-in socket on the VCR. In the aerial-out socket of the VCR, I plugged in the lead supplied and from there into the area in at the back of the television. I then connected the scart lead (this machine has two scart sockets, one for in, from my other VCR and the other one to the scart at the back of the television).
