...During my recent holiday to Italy Verona was one of the cities that I visited. Verona is a city in Northern Italy not far from Lake Garda. Due to its geographical position the city has frequently flooded in the past and as you travel round the city this can be noted by water markings on bridges and walls. Verona was also the town that Julius Caesar visited for his relaxing stays and features strongly in the travel diaries of Goethe. Furthermore Verona is also the town were Dante wrote the second part of his 'Divine Comedy'. Despite all of this however Verona is probably most famous for being the setting for William Shakespeare's most famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. So what can you do in Verona? Veron, Verona, wherefore art thou Verona

Advantages: Beautiful City, lots to see & do

...Walking around Verona in early June, there was a smell all over the city, not the smell of decaying rubbish as I experienced in my work trip to Naples, but the sweet smell of tree blossom, and Jasmine, even my hotel had Jasmine growing under the window! Verona Opera festival

Advantages: Culture, music and Shopping
Disadvantages: Can't think of any except perhaps the crowds at Opera time

...OK, now I know this might not be everyones idea of a great night out but if you are in or around Verona between June and August you should really try it. The Verona Opera Festival takes place every year in the open air arena in the centre of Verona this year its between 19th June and 31st August, they usually perform about 4 different operas on a rotating schedule, one of these is nearly always Aida. If thats a bit too high brow for you they also usually have one of the lighter operas such as Carmen on offer as well. The arena itself seats about 22,000 (no thats not a typo) when full which most nights it is. Unlike the atmosphere and cost of somewhere like Covent Garden, this is very much a people place. Tickets cost as little as 24Euros (thats about £17) for this you get to sit on the stone steps all the way round the arena...

...It could be said that in the past year I've gone to Verona a little too often, especially considering I don't live in Italy. That said, I'd go back tomorrow. What’s more important thought is the football in the city, never mind some old story. Tim Parks is an English author. Some years ago he went to live in Italy, just outside Verona the setting for this story. He has a strong pedigree for writing both fiction and non-fiction, his novel Europa was short listed for the Booker prize and there is an impressive list of his other works. Wow - what a city!

Advantages: Breathtaking views, bundles of romance, history and architecture
Disadvantages: Easy to get lost, no obvious hostel/travellers sites (except camping)

...Absolutely fantastic experience. I spent a brief six hours in Verona whilst touring round Italy and out of all the cities we visited, i found myself falling in love with Verona. We arrived by train from venice which is about 2 1/2 hrs away (where we were staying) and picked up 2 maps in the train station (which is advisable as it never looks the same when your walking it!) It took us about 15 minutes to get to the centre Arena, where we passed lots of interesting looking museums and shops (no time to look though). We then started at juillet's resting place which was beautiful and it made the story more poignant for us. From there we negotiated our way through the tiny streets and alleyways through many squares with fabulous examples of Italian architecture and found Juillet's balcony.   Italy For Beginners

...walls at home. When you visit the Torre Aquila you get a very good audio-guide, available also in English. Wherever you raise your eyes in Trento you see the surrounding mountains, the town lies at the bottom of a bowl so-to-speak, nice in spring when the peaks are still covered with snow and the flowers in the parks and gardens are already in full bloom, stifling hot and sultry in summer. We need about 10 minutes back to the train station, the whole tour through Trento has lasted only some hours, you can see it as a starter, an appetizer for the rest of Italy; Verona and the Lake of Garda are one hour away by train, Venice three, there you can begin the main course . . ....
