Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Advantages: Great Cast, Music, Characters, Humour
Disadvantages: Ending

.... Ryder will follow his word and instantly finds a connection with Garber. The character was brilliant. Sarcastic, unpredictable and his humour is really funny. I also loved the look of Ryder, menacing features, tattoo?s up his arms, rouged look which fitted well. John plays a brilliant role in this film. I find that when he plays bad guys it is done superbly and I was laughing at his humour all the way through. The acting of John was also done to perfection and he works well with Denzel. John Travolta is well known and has a successful acting career. His previous work include films such as- the famous- ?Grease? in 1978. Notre Dame De Paris by Victor Hugo

Advantages: A beautifully real story that will rend the heart
Disadvantages: Some of the description can be a little long-winded

...Better known as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Notre Dame de Paris was written by Victor Hugo as a tribute to the Parisian cathedral and the beauty of its lost Renaissance city. The main character is Quasimodo, the grotesque hunchback and cathedral bell ringer, adopted as a baby and brought up by the serious-minded, emotionless archdeacon Claude Frollo. Both Quasimodo and Frollo find themselves driven into a passionate obsession for a young and beautiful gypsy girl - Esmerelda. But Esmerelda - kind-hearted but a little shallow - only has eyes for the handsome, vainglorious Captain Phoebus. The complex, interweaving love story is bound to end in tragedy. ...After a truly dreadful week at work I decided I needed some cheering up, so delved into my DVD collection for a suitably cheery title. Eventually I decided upon the 1982 Julie Andrews classic ?Victor Victoria.? Having bought this for £3.99 a few weeks ago on Amazon this seemed the perfect time to watch it. Any reader of my previous reviews will be aware that I am a Julie Andrews fan, but this film does not fit into the Andrews stereotype, rather breaking the mould. It does carry a 15 certificate, which does seem unusual for a musical comedy, but with issues spanning transvestism, homosexuality and sexual identity you can fully see why. ...Blake Edwards had a unique style of film; all the films seemed to have a certain atmosphere while each maintaining an individual character. Of course, Julie Andrews was a frequent actress in his films ? Edwards and Andrews are married, and have been since 1969, an astonishing longevity for Hollywood. In ?Victor/Victoria?, Edwards returns to a Parisian settings familiar to fans of his work in the Pink Panther series ? there is some minor elements of slapstick (the clutzy waiter, the bumbling detective, perhaps a nod in the direction of the Pink Panther films), but the real narrative plot is drawn along by the stylish comedy of Julie Andrews (Victoria Grant/Victor) and Robert Preston (Carroll Todd), in one of his last films. ..."Babylon" is the fifth novel by up-and-coming Russian author Victor Pelevin. I must admit that I bought this under false pretences - I was looking for another Russian science-fiction author. Buying the wrong book does not normally however affect my enjoyment of the cuckoo in the nest, and certainly does not influence my view of the usurper. It can sometimes lead to discovering a new author. Tatarksy (first name Babylen but calls himself Vladimir) is an impoverished graduate in translation with unfulfilled poetic aspirations from Generation "P" (for Pepsi). The novel starts with the narrator telling us of a generation that chose to drink Pepsi then goes on to tell us it was actually selected by party officials. What choice? He ends up working for a pittance for shady Caucasian interests as a kiosk attendant. By pure coincidence...
