Funny viking saga in the style of Python or Gilliam

Advantages: Great ensemble cast and locations
Disadvantages: Not many

...seeing the gods or Valhalla and seeing Eric vanish using The Cloak Invisible. There are so many faces to recognise and everyone does a very good job, John Cleese as Halfdan The Black (I really don't think Jack Lemmon would have done the role justice) playing the role as a favour to Terry Jones (who wrote & directed the movie & also played The King Of Hybrasil). This was never really going to be a Monty Python Film but it works very well. Not many of the cast were huge stars at the time (apart from Mickey Rooney & Eartha Kitt who were most likely the two biggest names attached to the movie) so I think that brought the budget down. It's well shot and all the location stuff (including Norway for the village scenes and Malta doubling as Hybrasil) looks stunning. For those who like Python or Terry Gilliam style films this is well worth a look...

Review of Erik The Viking (Special Edition) (DVD)

Run! It's the Vikings!

Advantages: A swashbuckling charge down memory lane!
Disadvantages: It isn't very PC and nor does it have great depth.

...'The Vikings' is a 1hr 51min movie from the 50s starring Kirk Douglas, available at a very low price on DVD. Looking back in his autobiography, 'Climbing the mountain', Kirk Douglas had a lot to say about 'Spartacus'. I can see why because it was a huge movie with lots of gladiators forming an army to challenge even the mighty Romans. However, a film of his from the 50s that I loved dearly but which he hardly mentions, was 'The Vikings''. I like it more than 'Spartacus'. Directed by Richard Fleischer, 'The Vikings' was released when I was four way back in 1958. It did the rounds of cinemas quite regularly in Birmingham in the following years which is how it was that when I was eight I found myself, wide-eyed and in awe of this movie. Why? Because the world it depicted was colourful, exciting and filled with larger than life...

Visiting Vikings

Advantages: Interesting, fun & friendly
Disadvantages: The technology can fail; a bit short on detail in places

..."You may experience a little time turbulence" we were informed. "Just a little shaking; it's nothing to be alarmed about". We were sat on benches in a small room that forms the Jorvik's equivalent of the TARDIS, as the screen in front of us scrolled back through about a thousand years of York history. Museums have clearly changed since I were a nipper. Emerging from the time capsule, we were then to be taken on another journey. Carriages slung from an overhead track, were to take us from the riverbank up through the streets of the Viking settlement of Jorvik. It was dark, and dank, and just ever so slightly smelly?no-where near as bad as I suspect it would have been, but enough for atmosphere. We hadn't expected any of this (not least because we'd been aiming for a different museum entirely, but that's another story...

Discover York's Viking past

Advantages: Lots to see
Disadvantages: Expensive, the queues

...above. Each tour consists of about 30 people and tours take place about every 10 minutes throughout the day. After a wait of only a few minutes we were greeted by a chap dressed as a Viking who invited us to follow him on a journey into the past to the year 975AD and more intriguingly to a specific date within that year. We all followed like sheep and were seated inside a small room, this room was referred to as "the time machine" and this is from where our journey began. I won't describe what happened in detail for feel of spoiling it for others but it was an interesting start to the tour. Having travelled back in time over a thousand years we were then greeted by another authentically dressed character who loaded us all into carriages which would take us on our tour of York as it would have looked all those years ago. Advantages: Interesting displays with a lot of interactive possibilities.
Disadvantages: the Journey of Yorvik streets is short and could be slower.

...We decided to have a day trip to York a few months ago as it was the school holidays, and everyone had a bit of money to spend and was looking forward to a good day out. A few days before the trip, my Mum won some tickets to get into Jorvik Viking Centre in the centre of York for free, and as it was free we decided we might as well go. We had had a nice morning in York, visiting plenty of the shops and we also went to Café Rouge for lunch. Then after lunch we thought it might be a good time to use our free tickets, thinking that everyone would be having lunch.
