The village is bedevilled by talk and all is not as it seems in the village of Turnham Malpas ... Does pushy newcomer Venetia have her eye on Peter, the handsome rector? Is Jeremy, her husband, really making a success of the new health club? And why does Willie's new love set a vicious tongue wagging? In the Royal Oak, the usual banter has turned to bitter wrangling as the rector's wife Caroline makes a challenge over an ancient country tradition and splits the village her husband had so recently united. As the people of the village use the power of words to reconcile or divide, Peter finds it is what isn't talked about that threatens to cause madness, confusion and tragedy.

Between the mid-nineteenth century and the First World War, and especially towards the end of that period, the population of the two Rhondda valleys in the heart of the South Wales coalfield expanded faster than that of any comparable area in Britain, as thousands of men came to work in the mines. A string of new villages grew up in both valleys, which had previously been a thinly populated farming community. Thousands of new houses were put up in a very short time, together with pubs, schools, chapels and other buildings. Who built all these houses? Who decided where they were to be built? How much did it cost? What return did the builders see on their capital? How did the terraces so characteristic of the South Wales coalfield evolve? How did the internal layout of the houses differ between different streets and different communities? These and other questions are considered in this study, which includes a number of measures drawings of typical Rhondda houses. After a short account of housing before the Industrial Revolution, the book describes successive phases of their development - from early attempts by the coal owners to house their workers, through the main period of growth when most housing was provided by private investors, speculative builders and the now largely forgotten building clubs, to the various problems that emerged before the First World War. These the Local Authority sought to tackle after 1918 by the building of council houses, a logical development of their long-standing battle to improve standards of public health in the district.
