A Caribbean experience in St Vincent

Advantages: Cheap, gorgeous scenery, fantastic beaches, nice locals
Disadvantages: Few resorts, you need to know a local

...St. Vincent and the Grenadines (?SVG?) is located in the Windward Islands at the lower end of the Caribbean chain. SVG is situated between Grenada 75 miles to the south, St. Lucia 24 miles to the north and Barbados 150 miles to the east. SVG has a tropical climate that is influenced by the North East trade winds, resulting in a minimum temperature of around 28 degrees centigrade, and boy does it get hot in the summer months. St Vincent is often referred to as the ?Jewel of the Caribbean? and once you get on the island and do a bit of exploring it is easy to see why. Tourism Tourism obviously brings in money and this is something that the Government are actively trying to grow. The island of the rich and famous

Advantages: Gorgeous, quiet and un-touched beaches, some great properties
Disadvantages: Very expensive, not much to do for the day tripper

...Mustique is a 1,400 acre island located in the Southern Caribbean. This private island is owned and operated by the Mustique Company. This is an organisation which comprises of shareholders from 17 countries whose aim is to preserve the natural beauty and tranquility of the island. We flew direct to Mustique from St Vincent and I understand there are flights from other East Caribbean Islands including St Lucia and Grenada. The airport in Mustique is tiny and comprises of nothing more than a couple of small concrete runways and a wooden shack. This airport cannot cope with large aircraft and the only way of landing on this island is in very small charter planes and helicopter. ...With my 40th birthday coming up, I was given some money, which I chose to spend on buying some classic films on DVD from Amazon UK. On one of the film yahoogroups I am on, we recently discussed how good old horror movies were and I remembered especially liking two Vincent Price films ? The Fly and House of Wax. This led to my searching for his movies on Amazon and I ended up purchasing The Vincent Price Collection for £4.98. The boxset comprises three films ? House on Haunted Hill (1959), The Bat (1959) and Shock (1946). All three are black and white films which look as if they?ve just been recorded off the telly! A Last Hurrah for Quality Drama

Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some

Just recently the channel has devoted most of its resources to finding out whether Britain has got talent, although most of the money seems to have been showered on the talent-spotters themselves. This undoubtedly explains why ITV has decided to discontinue one of its best recent dramas after only two series. Vincent was a series that first aired in 2005 and starred Ray Winstone as a down-at-heel private investigator. A second series aired the following year. And a third? Not in the foreseeable future, it seems. I guess what has happened is that either Mr Winstone is too busy or too expensive, or, more likely, that ITV schedulers have decided that if the viewing masses are served gruel for long enough they may just learn to like it (it seems those schedulers...

I've glided over stunning tropical reefs in glass bottomed boats more times than I've visited the dentist in the last ten years. Admittedly, this last excursion is usually employed as an excuse to avoid the "colourful and vibrant" local market. Translation: "colourful and vibrant" means noisy, dirty, overcrowded, and full of scheming locals keen to relieve you of your holiday money. I realise, writing this, that I have had a little more experience than I first thought of boats. Meagre, perhaps above average. But nothing prepared me for 3 days on a sailing boat. Yikes, it's Vincent Price!

Advantages: Very scary!
Disadvantages: Probably not very historically accurate

...Vincent Price must be one of the scariest actors ever to have lived (he also went on to become a writer of cook books - check that fact, it's true!) and no more so than in this film where he plays Matthew Hopkins the infamous "Witch Finder General" of the 1600s. The movie is based on a novel, rather than a real biography so don't expect to learn a great deal of facts from it about the real Matthew Hopkins, even if the voice over at the start makes it sound very authoritative. Hopkins here is in his late 50s (and of course has a USA accent!) and is a greedy lawyer, motivated by sex and money and he probably doesn't even believe in witches.
