Pay 'very little' as you go
Advantages: very cheap calls and texts to other virgin mobile users
Disadvantages: Zilch
...I've been with Virgin Mobile for the past three years now. My sister introduced me to them as she had been with them even longer and was amazed at how low their prices were.
I have used Pay as you go with every phone I have had as if I were to go on contract, there would be no stopping me and the bill would be a huge amount. With Pay as you go at least you can monitor your spending and stop yourself spending money you havent got (in my case anyway!).
A bit of background on Virgin
--------------------------------------
Virgin Mobile launched its operations as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in November 1999. Virgin Mobile started as a joint venture between Virgin and T-Mobile. In January 2004, Virgin purchased from T-Mobile all of the shares that T-Mobile owned in Virgin Mobile.
Within a two years of Virgins launch...

Virgin Mobile Pay as You Go - I'll be sticking with these guys
Advantages: Great network coverage, good website, easy topups, choose you tariff
Disadvantages: Not many free rewards
...I have been with virgin mobile for several years now and am very pleased with them. They have brilliant coverage, the only place I have not got a signal before was in the middle of nowhere in Wales! They provide free voicemal which few providers seem to give you on pay as you go. I have never had any problems topping up and their tariffs seem reasonable though not cheap. Something I do really like is the option to switch between different tariffs which offer you better value for money depending on what you mostly use you phone for. They have a good website allowing you to view your most recent calls, texts and topups
The only thing is that they have never seemed too keen to give out free rewards such as free minutes or texts. However, recently I think this has been improving and I just have not been topping up enough to get...

Are you still a virgin mobile virgin!?
Advantages: Cheap calls and texts to other virgin mobile users
Disadvantages: Not everyone has a virgin mobile but they should!
...for the price of one to another network!
** The phones **
Buying a phone from virgin (in the shops or online) can sometimes be cheaper and sometimes be more expensive than other networks so i recommend you do your research. Also, the range of phones virgin has to offer is not as big as some of the other networks so if you can't find the phone you want, buy it where you can for the cheapest price possible then pay £10 to have the phone unlocked so it'll be compatible with virgin sim cards - you can have this done in most mobile phone stores.
** The team **
I've had no problems with any of my virgin phones so i've had no need to contact the team (which is a good thing!) but when registering the phone, i got through to the team very quickly and they were extremely helpful and answered any questions i had.
** Checking your airtime **

Virgin Mobile
Advantages: great customer service, good call plans, free voicemail
Disadvantages: lack of different call plans
...for those who call users on the other mobile networks in the UK. The great thing about this plan is that there is a flat rate of 15p - whether it is a landline, or a mobile, of ANY UK network. With this tariff, you also get alot of free text and call time, simply for using you phone, but i'll outline that a little bit further down in the review. Infact, maybe worth mentioning just now.
Below is a short summary of the costs you can expect with this plan:
* When you send 5 texts(UK), you get 5 free texts!
*When you talk for 5 minutes, the next 5 minutes are free
* Calls to landlines, virgin mobiles, and other networks are 15p - it's a flat rate - so there is no confusion at all!
OVERALL SCORE : 9/10

Virgin mobile - fantastic!
Advantages: Great prices, service, rewards, website... and lots more!
Disadvantages: Website sometimes won't load
...out £20 when you only really wanted £5)
5) Another great way to do it is via ATM - this is a service currently available at NatWest, RBS, Lloyds TSB, Allied Irish Bank, Nationwide and Co-op ATM machines - just put your bank card in as normal then select 'top up' and enter the amount and your number - just make sure you put your mobile number in right as otherwise someone else is going to get a nice suprise at your expense - it does ask for it twice so don't worry too much, I just get my number muddled with my Dad's - something he is quite pleased about!
Their website:
Here you can do a number of things to do with your phone. Firstly basic stuff like topping up and buying bundles (as explained above) but that's not all. You can also register your Virgin phone with them (free) to get extra benefits:
1) Get your next phone £10...

Virgin's rule breakers are the consumer champions
Advantages: Good value, particularly between Virgin customers
Disadvantages: 35p cross network rate unless you buy a bundle
...tariff can be confusing. 'Most UK calls' cost 5p per minute (great!) except the first five minutes a day which are 15p. So ten minutes in one day will cost you 80p - which is great value.
But 'most UK calls' includes calls to other Virgin customers but not to other mobiles. The latter cost 35p per minute, which is about the worst value you can buy.
It's a similar story for texts. Text a Virgin Mobile customer for 3p. Fantastic! Anyone else - 10p. Actually that's still pretty good: fair enough.
Finally - and this helps with the cross-network call problem - there are bundles starting at £7.50 a month, taken from your balance. Virgin Mobile pioneered this approach, giving pay-as-you-go customers the kind of choice and value contract customers expect. At time of writing there are five price points from £7.50 to £36, and four...

Thank you Rchard Branson
Advantages: Reliable service, no hidden charges, good reception, no pushy sales staff
Disadvantages: Limited choice of phones compared to rivals
...the chance to introduce me to the range of phones, I left the shop & visited Virgin records that had set aside an area within the shop for their new range of Virgin Mobile 'pay as you go' phones.
Things were a little different there; I asked the salesman that if I wished to buy £15.00 of talk time what I would get. He must have through I was a bit stupid & replied '£15.00 of calls sir'. 'What about the service charge' I asked. He replied 'there wasn't one'.
In fact the good thing about Virgin Mobile is that everything is transparent, no hidden costs, nice & simple, no sting in the tail. You pay for the phone, keep it as long as you want & pay lower phone costs, or at least they were at the time.
I bought a Virgin mobile phone, simple basic, black & white display, very 1999ish!! From that day on to now I have never found the need to...

Broadband on the go or at home (O2 Mobile Broadband)
Advantages: Internet without a phone line
Disadvantages: Slow, Unreliable, low data allowance
..., I?m assuming the same warning is given that you?ve 150MB left and when the allowance is used.
So am I recommending O2 Mobile Broadband? Well if, like me you have no other choice, then I suppose it does the job. It just doesn?t do it very well. Connecting to the internet can be very hit and miss and is often incredibly frustrating. The actual connection speed is normally far below that advertised, disconnections are a regular annoyance and the data allowance is pathetically small. Added to this is the fact that if you are using the Pay As You Go option then you need a credit or debit card to top-up your account, which makes life harder for the very people that PAYG is normally designed to help. But until BT either changes it?s policy on accessing broadband through their Pay & Go line or my years up and I can go on to a ?normal? telephone...

virgin on the sublime!
Advantages: good network coverages, cheap rates from virgin to virgin
Disadvantages: cant think of any!
...I have been using virgin mobile for about two years now. Having previously used Vodaphone and Orange, I have no hesitation in recommending virgin to anyone.
Calls from virgin to virgin are very cheap as are text messaging. The network coverage always seems to be good, with hardly ever any annoying breaking up. The only time it does seem to break up is when you are in a shopping centre or supermarket, although sometimes even then there can be a really good signal.
When you buy a virgin pay as you go mobile you can get some really good deals with credit, there is usually £10 top up voucher in the box, with a further £5 worth of credit when you register the phone. Last year I bought a new Nokia 7250i it actually came with £30 worth of credit and a further £5 worth of credit upon registering the phone. It pays to shop around as...

Lost my Virginity!
Advantages: Good customer service, free voicemail.
Disadvantages: Costs 10p to call customer services.
...I've been a customer of Virgin Mobile for years, since they started in fact. I don't use my phone a great deal, so don't want anything more than Pay as you Go, and I find Virgin's tariff excellent value for money. The first five minutes of calls each day cost you 15p per minute, then it goes down to 5p per minute. Text messages are 10p, or 3p to other Virgin customers. One good thing about Virgin is they don't charge you to access your voicemail, provided you have some credit on the phone. One thing that does annoy me is, that if you call customer services, there's a flat rate charge of 10p. I've only had to call them a few times while I've had the phone, but I don't see why it should cost me money to call them.
Having said that, when I have needed to call them, about a lost phone and to change my details, they were very friendly...
