Nifty Little Virus Scanner UPDATED 29 01 2001

Advantages: Fast, efficient,regular updates and FREE!
Disadvantages: Not being able to schedule full virus scans other than the default daily setting

Then I discovered this little gem from www.grisoft.com. AVG is a free to download program and runs beautifully and silently in the background leaving me to get on with more important things, I don't even notice it being there! AVG can be downloaded from www.grisoft.com or drives can be checked on-line. PC-cillinl can only be used on-line. Both do not offer what they call their full service, which has to be paid for. ...I first found out about InocculateIT on a cover disk of a magazine. I installed it because it was free and gave you updates whenever you wanted it. The program is quick, easy to use, and efficient at VIRUS scanning. It deinfected a macro virus I caught from school automatically. If you want a VIRUS scanner that is free and can be updated frequently, then this is the scanner for you. The only problem with this scanner is that is does not scan the email as it arrives. Hopefully this will be fixed in a newer version....

...I have tried several competing products, but have always returned to using this. It is fast, configurable (not that it needs it), and detects very well. If you want to play the "numbers" game, it might not strictly speaking detect as many virii as some of the better known "players" in this market, but for real world detection (where it counts), this beats the others hands down. Despite the total number of viruses it will detect being lower than, say, Nortons, it has found two viruses on seperate systems that Nortons did not even pick up, despite current updates of their signature files. A quick comparison - Nortons played hell with my bootup, and it took a good 90 seconds longer than normal for a straight boot (it was locking right after it loaded the memory resident component via DOS), and it was not configurable to the same...

...to fork out £30 on Norton at all! The key feature that you are interested in with a virus scanner is does it actually protect you against viruses. I've had a few warnings from AVG, and although I obviously cannot be sure that there isn't a very cunning little beast lurking on my PC right now, I'm confident that it is protecting me. The program incorporates the standard running-in-the-background virus scanner, as well as scanning your computer as it starts up and watching your email. This email function is limited to Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express packages, and as I don't use either of these I can't comment on it.
