Handspring Visor Edge

Advantages: Looks great, super slim
Disadvantages: A lillte old now, B/W only, no Bluetooth / WiFi

...Yes, it's another mattfantastic review of an old item. I hope you''re all picking up some great bargains on Ebay... Here are a few hardware specs for th Handspring Visor Edge PDA, check the "Product Information" tab for lots of detailed specifications. - Operating System: Palm OS version 3.5.2H - Processor: 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ - Memory: 8 MB - Display: 160x160 pixel, B&W, 16 shades of gray - Infra-Red port - Internal Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery The very sleek Edge is made of an anodized aluminum sandwich. There is a top aluminum shell, a bottom shell, and then in between is an translucent plastic body. The aluminum shells have a brushed surface that resists fingerprints and feels nice to the touch. The Edge comes in 3 color variations. Silver Metallic, Blue Metallic and Red Metallic. I picked Silver just...

Diamond review  Visor Vs Psion

Advantages: Very fast, and small
Disadvantages: Alarm could be louder!

...As you probably know the Handspring was created by the person who originally invents the Palm, so it runs the most widely support PDA operating system Palm OS (v3.5). You can tell its been well thought out and basically it gives the impression of a Palm Pilot version 2. It has all the things that 3com wished they had on their Palms. Basically your get a very fast PDA (Its faster than a Palm Pilot Vx) but you also get an expansion slot. This expansion slot is slowly coming into a world of its own, as there are a growing number of devices created for it. These range from MP3 players -> GPS -> Large Games -> Mobile Phone -> E-Books. The list just goes on. For a complete list goto www.handspring.com The Visor isn't just faster as a handheld, due to the fact that its hotsync cradle (The device you use to back it up/load software...

Visor deluxe

Advantages: Expansion of a system that already has some 75% of the pda market
Disadvantages: None significant in basic role.

...Handspring Visor deluxe PDA The world of personal digital assistants - literally, palm of the hand-sized computing devices - is growing apace. At the present time, it may be convenient to consider the options as two; those based on the Palm range and those which are not Palm. For the purposes of this review, we will assume that the reader has already chosen to go down the path marked "Palm operating systems". If undecided, there are excellent news groups on the Web and lurking on the edges of postings to these will greatly assist. The world of Palm has recently had a further split with the introduction of the Visor range manufactured by Handspring. This was a company started by the man who designed the original Palm device and who was given the right to use the Palm operating system. However, the Visor is not a Dolly-like clone...

handy handspring

Advantages: Springboard Expansion module
Disadvantages: Size in comparison to the Palm Vx

...There's not much point in harping on about the features of the Handspring Visor Deluxe, other than to say its what you'd expect from a high spec PDA. Of course, you're either smitten with Palm or Windows and thats your choice. I decided to buy mine after seeing someone with a Palm iii in a wallet and thinking "That'll be handy". So I went for the Handspring on the grounds that it's got everything the Palm Vx has got, costs less and has a useful looking expansion slot. At the same time a mate bought the Vx! So far, I've found the machine has impeccable performance - fast, effective, reliable. Everything I'd expect from a £200 piece of kit! But then again, so has my mate's Vx, which, although it cost him an extra £200, is a hell of a lot slimmer and handier for the pocket or wallet... As for the really useful expansion slot, I thought...

Review of Handspring Visor

Why I chose a Visor Deluxe

Advantages: Easy to use, good value and useful
Disadvantages: None for a sub £200 organiser

...Five or so years ago, I bought a Psion 3a - and within months I had stopped using it for good. It was a very capable machine, but it was bulky, required typing and just didnt seem vital enough to carry it around. That has all changed with the Visor Deluxe, which I have had for over a year, and am still using. The Palm OS has become the de-facto standard for organisers in the past few years, because of the small devices that it powers, and its very quick to learn handwriting recognition. The main functions revolve around the DateBook, Address, ToDo and MemoPad applications. There is also a good calculator, citytime and expense application (Though I have never got used to Expense). The organiser is supplied with a good leather slipcase, and a USB cradle, which plugs into your computer (PC or Mac), which lets you backup your...

Diamond review  Tangerine Dream

Advantages: Very cheap these days
Disadvantages: Can be hard to find these days

...I love my gadgets and seldom travel without at least one piece of electronic wizardry about my person. I've fancied a PDA - Personal Digital Assistant - for some time, but they've always been just too expensive for what would really (or so I thought) be more of a toy than an essential bit of kit. Recently, though, I hit on the idea of buying a second-hand model. And I remembered that several years ago I had hankered after the Handspring Visor Deluxe. Not because it undercut and outperformed Palm's equivalent model, nor because plugin expansion packs made it infinitely adaptable, though both of these are true, but because it came in a range of translucent, iMac-style colours as well as the then-mandatory dull grey-black of other Palm systems. Ice (clear), blue and green were available, but the one I set my heart on was the orange...

An alternative to Palm

Advantages: A god cheap handheld
Disadvantages: Not widely available

..., Orange, Blue, Green, Gold and even Platinum! Features. --------- Yes it has plenty of them. It runs on a basic Palm O/S that means it is compatible with your desktop and other computer to syncronise your documents that you may have been working on. With its 8Mb of memory, it can handle complex additional programs. Those it can`t Handspring have an answer for. At the top is the Springboard Expansion slot. Simply boost your memory with an additonal 16 Mb card to give you 24Mb. Thats 8 more than Palm can offer. Rather than a push on its a slip on! You slide the expansion slot into place. This allows you to put your various peripherals onto the Visor without any worries. So you can install your Scanner, Camera or Audio device with no problems at all. Connection to other USB devices is perfected with a Single Serial USB port as well as...

BEHOLD THE COLOUR OF PRISM

Advantages: Faster processor, 16-bit colour, Springboard expansion slot, nice casing colour
Disadvantages: Screen flickers occasionally, fatter and heavier than the Visor Deluxe

...WOO-HOO! I've finally got my hands on the new Handspring Visor Prism! Luckily, Handspring has learned from its past mistakes and ordering a Visor is now quick and painless. ----------- Blue devil ----------- The first thing that hit me when I opened the Prism box was that the machine looks COOL. The Prism comes in only one colour -- Handspring calls it ``cobalt blue''. What the pictures on the Handspring website don't show clearly is that the Prism is actually a very nice dark metallic blue. The Prism also comes with a new cradle to accommodate the increased thickness. Like the Palm IIIc, the Prism's lithium ion battery is charged up when you put it on the cradle. What is interesting is that the cradle can also charge the new VisorPhone (a module that turns the Prism into a handphone) at the same time, if you have...

20th century technophile?s 'Gameboy?with attitude

Advantages: Springboard Expansion Slot, Funky transparent casing and an equally cool hotsync dock, very to use, backlight that enables use in absolute darkness, stylus has a hidden screwdriver function
Disadvantages: Tend to crash a lot which is a very bad point thus major data loss, consumes a lot of batteries, dim backlight

...I bought my first Personal Digital Assistant when I was 19, the year when I was drafted into the army, in 2000. It created a huge hype with its unique SpringBoard expansion slot. To me, it resembled a Nintendo Gameboy, except that it is much smaller, higher resolution, more functions, smarter, relatively larger memory? well, basically, a technologically advanced.adult?s ?gameboy?. I paid £120 for it at that time, but to tell you the truth, at this point in time, it is no longer in production, although Handspring does sell reconditioned Visors at about £50. My main purpose in writing this review is to show what PDAs were like 3 years ago, and how much PDAs have advanced technologically nowadays. -PRODUCT INFO- Processor : Motorola MC68EZ328 16 MHz RAM: 2 MB Display: 2 Bit (4 grey levels) Input Device: Touch screen Battery: 2 x...

Let your Hands Spring into action

It uses the Palm operating system and can accept input through the hand writing recognition system (Graffiti) or the on screen keyboard. =THE BASICS= The PDA is 125mm long, 75mm wide and 20mm in thickness, including the cover. It weighs about 300 grams. It comes with a Leather wallet and HotSync cradle. It is available in various colours (mine is translucent blue). The display screen is 60 x 60mm.
