VW Mk2 Golf GTi

...The Mk2 Golf GTi is an iconic eighties hatchback. The model I have been driving for the last year is an 1989 8 valve GTi and is a car that has been a pleasure to own and drive. The handling is remarkably deft and capable considering the age of the car and handles as well as, if not better than, many modern hatchbacks. The car is also surprisingly powerful, with far greater acceleration than than many of the sporty new little corsas and clios etc. Most of these Golfs now have very high mileage but that is famously not much of a problem with these cars, many of which have been able to pick up an astronomical mileage. My own has covered nearly 100,000 miles which is actually quite low compared to most mk2 golfs around. ...When my brother in law offered me his 1999 Golf MkIV GTI with only 34,000 miles on the clock I had to jump at the chance. I had only been in it previously as a passenger, but I found the seats extremely comfortable and supportive, the interior was very high quality with none of the cheap plastic I was used to in my previous cars! As my brother in law lives in London, the Golf was used very little, averaging around 4200 miles a year. In fact, when I checked the service history, it had only done 2,400 miles since the year before! Once I had taken delivery of it, I found it very smooth, the steering and pedals give a good amount of feedback (which I fine crucial to enjoyable driving) and the brakes are sharp and precise. It is solidly built, and so much bigger than the last car I had (renault 5) that I feel as if I am driving...

Golf GTI

Advantages: Smooth handling, reliable.
Disadvantages: Boring, has little character, expensive price and insurance.

The gearbox is smooth, as is the power steering. The controls are user-friendly and accessible. The pedals are very responsive ? I would say that the breaks, in my car at least, are just a touch too sharp. The clutch pedal throbs just a tiny bit, not enough to be noticeable or off-putting but enough to appreciate the engine. VW MK5 Polo GTI 2000 - 2001

Advantages: Small, nice to drive, nippy
Disadvantages: expensive to buy, hard to find, poor gearboxes

...Ive saddly just got rid of my golf. What can i say these thins are reliable and i mean reliable mine had over 200,000 miles on the clock yet went like it had only 20,000. The great thin about the 8 valver sis there amazing low down power put your foot down in any gear and they just pull like a train whats more they are smooth and refined with it they sound pretty mean too. Comfort the standard fitment recaroes are a gem better than any other car ive tried (and ive tried a few) they have both great support and comfort. Handling well they're a cult car for a good reason though paus em beyound there traction limits especially in the wet and it can get scary bearing in mind they're a heavey car. Mind you heavy is good these thing's are built lioke a sherman tank. Space is good with good stowage space and a decent size boot. Fuel economy is...

MK2 Golf GTI's - Built to last!

Advantages: Fast, Solid, Reliable, Built to last, Cheap for Parts now
Disadvantages: Getting old, hard to find a perfect example

...Well what can I say about the MK2 Golf? especially the GTI model imparticular? I have owned 11 MK2's with 7 of them being the GTI model. They are very solid, realiable and will run forever! Not only being very quick, they are excellent to 'mod'. There are many things that you can do to a GTI to suit your style, add rims, adjustable suspensions or even VR6 conversions. If you are interested in this, there are many enthusiast clubs along with shows up and down the country. Be careful when buying your golf as some may have been thrashed, sills may be rusted or clutches may be on there way out. As when buying any car, check all points thoroughly and take a look at a few. Although parts may not be expensive, problems that may exist may end up costing $$$ (e.g. if the bottom of the door is shot, you may need to get another door...

VW Polo GTi as a 2nd hand Car

Advantages: Nippy for a small engine size, good handling, good build quality, tons of equipment!
Disadvantages: Gearbox bearings can wear between 60 and 80k, pedal box recall, bbs alloys corrode easily.

...for sale which are missing the xenon headlight washers. This could be due to a front impact or could mean the car has not always been a GTI. An HPI check should show up anything like this. Check that both electric windows are in working order and that the rear washer and headlight washers all spray sufficiently. Please note that if the washer tank has less than 1ltr of fluid left, the headlight washers will not operate. Other pointers: The heated wing mirrors will operate when the rear screen heater button is pressed. The fuel tank does not have a locking cap, instead the fuel flap locks with the central locking. ...I owned a 1987 VW Golf Gti 16V for around 2 years until I had to sell it recently. Although they are becoming rare, and any good ones that are left are quire expensive, this is a very good car. A lot of motoring enthusiasts agree that the mk II Gti was the last tru Golf Gti until the mk V came along. The mk III and IV are far too heavy for the power that their engines produce nad this weight affects the handling too. The 16V mk II has 137bhp as standard and the engine revs to 7500rpm, making it very rapid - 0-60 in under 8 seconds and a top speed of around 130mph. You have to drive this car to appreciate the handling compared to newer Gtis - it is very sure-footed and agile, and never understeers unless it is on a very wet, slow corner. Maintenance is also far simpler compared to most modern cars as all parts are readily available...
