Good - but not the best Volvo S60
Advantages: Style, performance, comfort, good economy for performance, well built
Disadvantages: Not S60 prime model
...Right up front I am going to confess that I am writing this as a slightly frustrated non-Volvo S60 driver. Strange statement that don't you think but there we are out here in the big bad world we do not always get what we want??.
??.and we (Mrs Richada and I) really wanted a Volvo S60, but not as it happens, this the most powerful 220bhp 2.4 litre T5 Sport version. 15 years ago I would have not looked at a Volvo fullstop. However if the S60 had then been on the market, this the fastest one would have been my natural choice.
Maturity and certain financial commitments now mean that I am inclined to make far more rational choices when it comes to choosing a car, no matter if I pay for it, or is currently the case I have a free choice of company car up to a given budget.
Part of my maturity also gives me pangs of conscience...

The Volvo S60 Diesel SE
Advantages: Volvo , Great looks, Great Drive, Great Car
Disadvantages: None I Can think of
...I Took delivery of this car on the 13th Dec 2002. The car was spotless. It is a black S60 model SE.
I work as a senior ambulance officer. The car was then taken to our Ambulance Workshops. It was then fitted with Blue Lights behind the Grill Alternating Headlights that flash, rear blue and red strobes on the rear shelf and a magnetic blue lamp for the roof. It was also fitted with a hands free VHF radio and a VDO Dayton Sat Nav system. The reason for the fititng of the sat nav was that the volvo option was £3000 and the VDO was £1200. This was quite a saving so it was decided that it would be better . Finally the car was fitted with a 100 watt siren . The switched were fitted neatly below the heating controls.
The car its self also has electronic seats with memory. The seats are leather and heated. The car has automatic transmission...

Im sticking with Volvo from now on.
Advantages: Everything. Ride comfort, Economy, Brakes, Engine......
Disadvantages: Quite small rear seating area. Enough for 2 large adults, and a child
...Dont get me wrong, my father insisted that he would never get a volvo. but as it happens, this car changed it all... The Volvo S60 itself is to be honest, one of the best looking saloon cars out there, with the look of business-man about it. You turn up in this and you feel business like and most importantly in my eyes, special. When a car pulls that off, you know its good. My father previously owned a Volkswagen Bora 1.9 TDi, which in his mind was the best, most economical car going. It was one night when car shopping that I directed him towards the Volvo garage. We looked around and instantly saw the s60.
The distinctive looks struck us in the forecourt.
He sat in it, as did I and the interior is swedish perfection, it may look like plastic, but the feel about the interior is brilliant. The centre console is pointed slightly...

Volvo S50 D5 SE
Advantages: Nice Design, Great Comfort, Reliable, Economical
Disadvantages: High Insurance Group
...This is the 2.4 Litre, 5 Cylinder (Diesel) Volvo S60
My Dad owns this car but i borrowed it for a few days when i needed a car to drive around in.
I only took out a temporary insurance deal with norwich union which, for 2 weeks, cost me £71.40 which is expensive, but i only needed it for 2 weeks and i wasnt going to pay £4k for a years cover (just because im 18)
The boot space is good and is plenty for shopping, or luggage, although if you carry equipment around which is bulky, you may have a problem, because being a saloon, the boot opening is fairly small.
Although the engine has 163 Bhp which dosent sound a lot for a car this size when you see cars like my mates Renault Clio having 197 Bhp, but the car squeezes every last drop of power and the clio is no match on acceleration or top speed.
The handling round corners is...

A GREAT CAR FOR ALL SEASONS AND TASTES.
Advantages: Superb Engine. Great Looks. Sybaritic Scandanavian Interior.
Disadvantages: High List Price. Depreciation. Small Boot Opening.
...WHAT IS IT?
The Volvo S60 is Volvo's first truly modern, non-brick shape design. OK, I know that a couple of you will argue that the S80 came first by a short head, but nobody could really offer that up as a style icon. Ironically, the new S80 just launched by Volvo looks far sleeker and more S60 like - rumours are that the S60 will actually be killed off.
Since the launch of the S60, Ford have taken a majority shareholding in Volvo. Ironically, it seems to be Volvo technology which is now filtering over to Ford - especially the superb five cylinder engines which, in petrol form at least, are now to be found in the hot Focus 2.5T ST as well as the new S-Max / Galaxy people carrier duo launched last month.
Having said that, the smaller S40 and V50 models do share the latest Focus platform, the S60 bears no such commonality...

Better than you think
Advantages: General loveliness.
Disadvantages: Fiddley to replace headlamp bulbs.
...I've owned this car for a year now (2006 model). The S60 is a nice looking and car still looks good although it's been around a while, especially in black. Nice coupe look to it even though a four door.
The interior has a nice unpretentious quality about it and the seats are wonderful - I believe one car mag survey voted them best seasts of any car in the world.
Exterior is typical volvo quality somehow manages to look a cut above mid-range cars.
The 2.4 D5 diesel engine is an absolute gem (at least so far). Nice sound to it ;hard to believe it's a diesel. It's truly punchy and can surprise you with its acceleration and eats up motorway miles easily. (0-60 approx 8.0secs. Top speed 143mph)
The best thing for me is the fuel consumption I regularly get 41 - 43 in general driving. But most remarkably on a recent motorway drive from...

the acer s60
Advantages: colour screen
Disadvantages: heavy
...Features:
4,096 colour screen
16MB memory
downloadable games
Sound recording
Photo handler
Clock
Calculator
Address book
Memo pad
MP3 handler
Infrared
The PDA?s (personal digital assistant ) are organisers and are built to replace information on paper. Most modern PDA?s have colour screens, but few come with camera?s. (The XDA II has a camera but you can make calls on it , so its more like a phone). PDA?s are for business but you can use them for other things e.g. playing games, downloading and editing pictures and playing and recording music.
Advantages:
The acer s60 has a 4,096 colour which is better than some phones and has free downloadable games that you download from the PC-CDROM. It also has the ability to record sound and handle MP3?s. The acer s60 has infrared which is found in most PDA?s and is used to...

How Good Is This
Advantages: Very well made car, super brakes, good performance
Disadvantages: Ride and handling not perfect
...The morning mail brought the usual clutter of junk, I seem to get offered a credit card and more home insurance every day. Just before Easter though I got a letter from Volvo offering me a test drive in the new Volvo S60. As an encouragement to do so they said I could have a remote controlled S60 free for doing so. So a chance had fallen upon me to drive the new Volvo and satisfy the inner child with a toy one. Not exactly test one get one free but its probably as near as I will get.
I booked my test drive through Volvo and duly arrived at the showroom at the appointed hour to drive it. The sales manager was very courteous and everything was ready. Now I have owned a Volvo before and you can read my review of the S40 I had. My experience with that car was not good. I have also provided test reports on the S70 which is an excellent car...

Fabulous all round car
Advantages: Punchy, characterful engine, refinement, comfort, build quality, equipment, value for money
Disadvantages: Poor turning circle, poor rear legroom, numb steering
...The S60 wasn't on the radar as a replacement car, until my old Mondeo (reviewed elsewhere on this site) began to run into age/reliability related problems, and this came up for sale from a good friend. I knew the history and the condition, so I bought it.
Normally I wouldn't be too keen to buy a 120,000 mile car, especially as I do quite high mileage myself, but this is a Volvo, and Volvo build quality is legendary with tales of 350,000 mile cars still running fine, and the Volvo owners club having several 500,000 milers still registered as running. Whilst I can't vouch for that, I can say that the S60 shrugs off 120,000 miles like most cars shrug off half that. I have never driven a car with mileage like this that feels so new. The doors still close with a well damped clunk, absolutely everything works, there are no interior rattles...

XC90 T6 Exec. MPV = More Please, Volvo!
Advantages: Most stylish 4X4, hugely roomy, very comfortable, good value for money
Disadvantages: Expensive second hand, needs bigger engine, may not fit your garage
...I am very much aware that my wife is by a long way NOT alone in being a fan of this particular car. A good couple of years after its launch Volvo still have a healthy waiting list for them. That means two things;
1) Volvo actually under-priced this car when they launched it and;
2) that of all the 4X4's on the market the XC90 makes by far the most sound financial sense, its' residual (second hand) value is second to none.
Volvo were undoubtedly surprised by the runaway success of their very first entry into the proper 4x4, or as the Americans would call it SUV, Sport Utility Vehicle, market. Sure, they had dabbled with four wheel drive versions of the V70 Estate, but this was a totally new departure for this ultra conservative Swedish firm. However with Fords financing and marketing know how, Volvo have powered from strength to...
