Advantages: Good features, VPN support, 10/100 WAN port Disadvantages: Challenging documentation
...Not so long ago, you were lucky to have broadband of any speed. Now broadband is getting faster with speeds of 8-10Mbps becoming more common and 24Mbps not so far away. As a result, the current generation of routers for the home or small office are starting to show a weakness - they only have a 10Mbit WAN port for connecting to your ADSL or Cable connection.
The Netgear FVS114 manages to bring a 10/100 Mbps WAN port equipped router to the party with a whole bunch of extra features. As the box proudly proclaims, it combines 8 VPN tunnels, a router, 4 port switch and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) Firewall in to one compact device in the familiar dark blue metal case that Netgear are famous for. With support for 253 users, there's a lot of power here for the price.
What's in the box
As well as the Netgear FVS114 itself, you get...
Advantages: Router and wireless in one package Disadvantages: VPN doesn't work as advertised!
...I purchased this router hoping that I'd be able to connect my Hx4700 pocket pc to my local Lan via VPN but unfortunately it didn't work!
As a wireless router I can't say anything wrong about the WRV54G, once you managed to set it up it works a treat. The manual is slightly out of date, with a few extra settings appearing which if set wrong can prevent the router from working properely.
One new setting is the VPN gateway function, this is not listed in the current manual. This function is so that if you have a site where all your traffic must go via a central gateway, ie you use a internet proxy, the router can send all your traffic over a vpn tunnel to that site. The problem comes if you make the mistake of thinking that this function is setting the router up as a gateway to accept VPN connections. If this function is turned...
Advantages: Great performance for wireless and wired routing. Great firewall Disadvantages: Expensive, lots of reboots for configuration, can't turn off radios.

Recently, the best innovation in networking award at Tom's Hardware Guide was awarded to the NETGEAR FWAG114 Broadband ProSafe Dual Band Wireless VPN Firewall. The majority of respondents in their recent online reader's survey chose this device for the accolade probably because it seems to be the perfect wireless router -or at least the best you can get now. So, to see what was so great about it, and because I wanted a new wireless router with more bandwidth to satisfy greater demands for multimedia streaming I chose this one. Admittedly, I had chosen this router before it got the award and had been using it for a while, but to see if it was really as good as it claims, I decided to put it...
Advantages: Good Speed, Easy Configuration, Quick Setup, Good Documentation, Integrated 4-Port Switch Disadvantages: Many configurable options, some networking knowledge required
Advantages: Reliability and value for money. Disadvantages: Operating temperature.
...In my opinion this broadband ADSL router is one of the best on the market considering its price.
I have been using this model (I've had different versions) for a number of years and never have I known one to fail; this is especially impressive considering I never turned them off when in use. I am a very heavy internet user and when configured correctly delivers on the speed that you would expect.
In terms of 'plug and play', there is very little needed to be configured on this product to start surfing away and it comes with a single quick start sheet that shows clearly how to access the configuration page through a web browser initially.
For more advanced users it is very easy to configure port-forwarding (useful when playing online games or downloading via peer-to-peer to achieve the desired connection speeds). It even supports VPN...
Advantages: Powerful, Easy to configure, Good support, Low cost Disadvantages: Needs extra 'modem' for each broadband Connection, Occasional reboots required
...DRAYTEK VIGOR 2950 ENTERPRISE FIREWALL
The Draytek Vigor 2950 Enterprise Firewall is a hardware firewall and router aimed at medium sized to large businesses. I?ve set up and am using six of these routers at a certain company with offices around London and have been using them for a few years now and was done as an upgrade from the Draytek Vigor 2600 and 2800 routers that were previously in use. The reason for the upgrade to the 2950 was due to the VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection being slow with the previous models. This was probably due to the processor in the router not being powerful enough to encrypt and decrypt the data more quickly. The 2950 has a dedicated co-processor just for the VPN, so performance would be better. It costs around £320 but price varies from supplier to supplier.

Advantages: Nice looking, quite good range, good amount of features Disadvantages: Often some connection problems, hard to set up for an average user
...encryption, and no access list, but has support for an access list, 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption, and WPA-PSK. All of these work well, though WPA is obviously recommended. The latest update also added support for VPN, which may be useful for some people. Another fault with this router however is that it is quite awkward to set up things an average user may have to use, like port forwarding - this requires making a "firewall rule" relating to the port in question, and then using this rule as a service, and specifying which WAN and LAN IPs can use it, which could be quite daunting for the average user.
The manufacturer support is poor for this model as well - the complaints on official forums about this routers connectivity problems have been mostly ignored, and this has caused more problems for NETGEAR. I have tried most things in relation...
