Just bought my Golf a few days ago and from what I had read, it is a very good car - but now I have it, it is fantastic! It is quick without being too fast, its refined without feeling like a cruiser and its reliable but without the really expensive services - it has no cambelt so the most expensive service is £275, and £75 of that is the titanium plugs they put in them... ...great all round. I liked it mostly because it looks a little like your standard cars and not even the badge gives much of an idea what the car is really like... And the engine sounds fantastic with a meaty V5 rumble! And there are bargains to be had! If you are to buy one try get Pre 2001 as this entitles you to cheaper tax rather then been 180ish its 110 for the year. If I could recommend a model I would go for the GT TDI130 but always stay with the PD engine as the are the best PD’s are the 100,115,130,150 BHP models produced 2000 onwards not so many 2000 so watch out for the people selling the 110BHP GT TDI as this ... Advantages: reliable well manafactured car. No major problems will occur if serviced yearly. Nice smooth ride, quite engine.
Disadvantages: Expensive to repair asparts are expensive. Suspension is prone to easy wear and tear.

Well from my own experiance having a this car myself it is the first car i have ever owned which i have never experienced any problems with. I ahve had this car a year an never had any problems atall which is a relief as we all know that cars are expensive things to maintain. Its a smooth ride , quiete engine and pretty nippy aswell. Id rather pay that little extra for a good reliable car and that is what i got :) However parts can be expensive on the rare occasion youre car may need work, but if serviced regulary i can gaurentee that this car wil most likely out live you!.
