...i own a 2004/04 vw sharan 1.9 tdi carat (was top of the range - over £20K new) automatic trans with climate, 6cd, alloys, leather interior bought from a vw dealer in 2005 with just 16,100 miles on the clock with FVWSH & 2 owners. now done just under 68K miles, still with Vw full history. looks good, drives & handles well, very roomy but... at approx 20K miles the water pipe that feeds the rear wash wipe decided to come away from the water pump soaking the n/side passenger front foot well. at approx 37K miles the alternator decided one night to fry itself along with the fuse box and part of the wiring loom - nearly a £800 repair with local vw dealer. at approx 67K miles the sharan decided to loss power and became dangerous to drive. the vw dealer found the problem. the air mass meter had failed - a £180 repair. 2 days later...

VW Sharan 1.9 TDI Carat 1996

Advantages: Great family car, very adaptable
Disadvantages: Interior trim easily damaged, can be costly if things go wrong

...are easily damaged as the children tend to slide in and out of the car, sliding doors would have also been nice. It is not very easy to remove the seats from the car and with it having not a lot of boot space it is fairly necessary to be able to remove them when needed, maybe this is something that has been addressed in newer models. If you suffer from poor radio reception as we did, it is probably because it uses an aerial in the rear quarter light window, we had to get an electrical device to amplify the signal, now its fine. Overall though it has been reliable, we are now up to 110,000 miles , still servicing yearly with VW with no other problems as far as reliability goes although, the starter motor is just starting to make the occasional funny noise on start up). 2002 VW Passat 1.9TDi 130bhp

Advantages: Spacious, frugal, good performance.
Disadvantages: Looks aren't very exciting.

...I drive a 2002 (52 plate) VW Passat 1.9 TDi 130bhp for work and it has been very reliable and dependable. The engine is by far the best bit about this car - over 40mpg even when driving swiftly and very quiet whether cruising on the motorway or driving around town. The model i drive is reasonably well equipped - it has a good air conditioning system, electric mirrors, windows, sunroof etc. The only extra i would have added is a factory CD player. The seats are comfortable on long motorway drives and the road holding is good for a car of this size and weight. Interior is spacious enough to accomodate 4 adults comfortably - 5 at a push. The boot is also very spacious. I have also driven the 115bhp model and would thoroughly recommend buying the 130bhp model insead. The fuel economy isn't noticably different yet the 130bhp model is far...

...I have a VW Polo 1.4tdi 06 plate Its the best car I've had, economical, practical, stylish and nippy. The boot is not huge but can fit one large suitcase and two small at a squeeze so adequate for my family of four. A full tank of deisel ( around £40) will last me two to three weeks with the everyday school and work run and weekend local roaming around. We took it to Glasgow - around 360 miles from home with a full tank on leaving, it had just under 1/4 of a tank when we got there. When pulling away it drives more like a 1.6. and will sit very comfortably at 70mph on the motorway. It feels safe and comfortable to drive, and has excellent build quality ( so my husband says lol ). We've had no mechanical problems so far. It has cheap Tax and insurance. Servicing costs £45 to change the oil for its first service...

I have to admit that my technical knowledge of cars is basic to say the least but I do drive the things, more than I want to really so I do have some experience with them which might be useful to other motorists. So here goes an 'idiots' guide to the VW Sharan Turbo Diesel multi purpose vehicle (MPV). HOW AND WHY I CAME TO OWN ONE I bought my VW Sharan two years ago second hand form a private seller. It was then about a year old and had 50,000 miles on the clock. The reason I was looking for a MPV type of car is that my family had recently expanded from 4 to 5 and since we often took foreign motoring holidays I though it would be ideal to have a car big enough to hold all the kids plus the vast amount of luggage we seem to have to carry about...

...on main beam and how often can you use main beam on our crowded roads? Additionally - much to my disgust when going abroad for the first time I discovered that it was not possible to convert them for driving on the Continent without removing half the front of the car. The local VW garage quoted £150 for performing the work! They advised that stick-on beam converters would not work due to the high temeprature of the lamps melting the glue, so I compromised by sticking duct tape over half the lamp lenses - rather defeating the purpose of having those lamps!...

Disadvantages: Not the fastest car on the road by any means.

...It took a while to locate a car with the specification I was looking for, (a Volkswagen Golf TDI SE 5 door hatch 90 bhp - in either silver or green, and within my budget of £10,500), even by using the VW website and doing whole country searches. I had already called in at all of my local dealers (Ipswich, Colchester, Stowmarket, Lowestoft) and was told that they are often sold even before they even appear on the garage forecourt or the VW website. Hearing this was rather off-putting, but I continued my search and in April 2003 a suitable car appeared on the website at Simpson's Garage, Lowestoft. ...A larger than average family saloon car with that little bit extra for the 'driver' in you! I had mine from new in December 2005 and have covered almost 75000 miles in less than 2 years. Standard equipment included 17" alloys, climate control, single cd player, dusk til down automatic lighting function and some very comfortable sports seats. I added 'cruise control' which is surprisingly not a standard option, though it is on the 'SE' and 'SEL' versions. The 2.0TDi (140bhp) engine delivers smooth, yet powerful acceleration and its 6 speed manual gearbox is fantastic as it is very close and quick to change through the gears. The car cruises on the motorway and gives in excess of 50mpg on a good run, and even through urban areas I have had no less than 40-45mpg returns. ...This was my first ever VW I bought this via an action when it was 18 months (June 2003), the car had 24,000 miles and FSH. It was around 16k new I paid around 10k for it, thought that was a good deal. Drivability is very smooth and comfortable compared to my last car, Peugeot 106. Just was I need as I drive over 500 miles a week. Fuel economy is great, I average around 60mpg if I am very sensible around 68mpg. It is still nippy enough with the ninety horses under the bonnet, when required. Insurance is reasonable enough and the tax is £120 per year Safety is well thought out with front airbags, side airbags and side impact bars the car has 4 encap safety stars.
