(+) Some very good scenes. Ensemble cast work, and Edward Burns, especially. (-) Ultimately overdone, hyper-real; some weak dialogue; incessant music; inescapable schmaltz; unwitting propaganda. Matt Damon. (*) (On Ciao since: 06/2000)
(+) Nice camerawork, atmospheric, some good dramatic scenes (-) Maybe a bit too 'American', quite political, which may put some off, some slow-ish scenes (*) (On Ciao since: 01/2002)

Advantages: Impressive to look at ... it has the "wow" factor ! Lots of possibilities & packed with features. Disadvantages: The price ... maybe this is something for serious collectors rather than kids ???
... THAT'S NO MOON !!!
The Lego Star Wars Collector Series Death Star is an amazing set ... not only does it look fantastic but it provides endless opportunities for recreating your favourite scenes from the Original Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes 4 to 6). You can rescue Princess Leia, disable the Death Star's Tractor Beam, escape from the Trash Compactor and explore the Control Room. You can even recreate the final duel between Luke and Darth Vader in the Emperor's Throne Room.
The set is massive ... and sits on an impressive rotating base. The Death Star itself is packed with rooms, zones and hidden features ... including it's very own hangar bay with mini Tie Fighter !!!
This set also contains an impressive 24 Lego mini figures INCLUDING Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, R2-D2, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Luke...
Advantages: Great single player campaign, nice graphics, decent online experience Disadvantages: Historically innacurate at times, animation a bit clunky, addition of vehicles
...landing around you, but it is great fun nontheless.
The campaign is split into battles where you play as an American in the Pacific against the Japanese and where you play as a Russian against Germany on the Eastern Front. This works really well and provides great diversity throughout the game. Each set of missions have different characteristics, which as I say, keeps it fresh.
Graphically it's a stunning effort from Activision. The attention to detail is amazing sometimes.
Online play is hit and miss. Activision have borrowed a lot of 'Call of Duty 4's' aspects and implemented them into their game. It's not a bad idea, as Call of Duty 4 got online play arguably nearly spot on but it lacks a bit of originality and sometimes doesn't work in the World War 2 setting. The 'perks' you can choose are cluttered with perks nobody really uses and some...
Advantages: Good depth Disadvantages: Camera angles
...Star Wars Empire at War is a real time strategy game set in the Star Wars universe. The units are all Star Wars but you do not need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy this game or know anything about Star Wars.
Story
The game takes place between episode III and episode IV and follows the battle up to the eventually potential destruction of the Death Star, depending on the options you had chosen through the game. You can play as either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire.
Game play
The main game is the single player campaign game, but there is basic galactic conquest, skirmish matches and online multiplayer to chose from giving the game plenty of options to choose from.
You play as the commander of the army unit and battles are both ground side and in space so a bit of variety over tactics and units available. There is...
Advantages: Clever, Great Chemistry Between Leads, Nice Twists Disadvantages: A Little One-Sided
...Charlie Wilson is a Texan politician famed for his hard-drinking, hard-living ways; famed for getting things done in politics and desired by all the women around him. Secure in his place in the world, he focuses entirely on representing his state, with little interest in foreign politics or upsetting the order of anything. However, when he comes into contact with Joanne, a powerful and rich Southern socialite, with ideas of stopping the Russians from entering Afghanistan he gets embroiled in a race to raise arms for the Afghans. But will his political position and good name stay intact when all is said and done?
Charlie Wilson's War is a witty and sophisticated drama about war-fare and politics in the time of the Cold War. Filled with sass and smarts it successfully makes the political drama entertaining and informative with three...
Advantages: Graphics Disadvantages: Short Play Time
...Gears of War is short. I'll be perfectly honest with you on that front. It'll take you somewhere between ten to twelve hours to make it through the game on Casual, the easiest of the two diffculties available at the beginning. A third diffculty level is unlockable after completing the game. At £40, ten hours might seem like a waste, especially
with the hype juggernaut backing it up. This is the Xbox 360
game to get for Christmas, according to the hype.
The hype is true.
One way to describe Gears of War is "focused." There is very little wasted space here. It is fairly linear, so you spend very little time running around looking for red keys to open blue doors. The main beneit to this linearity is that it gives the developers the ability to
tightly control the pacing. If you aren't shooting Locusts full of ittybitty
(or...
Advantages: Emotive storyline and great illustrations Disadvantages: not for younger readers who may not understand the message
...War and Peas
I have been doing some work on WW2, and of course, out came this well thumbed book, drawing as it does on some of the aspects of war and negotiations in a light hearted way.
STORY AND ILLUSTRATIONS
The author of this book has illustrated many books by other authors, so it's a foregone conclusion as we read through the book that the illustrations will perfectly complement the text, and will be instantly appealing to children. In fact, as the author and illustrator wrote, he draws to make things more real; not in the literal, but in the emotional sense. If we remember this, then we know the kind of pictures we will get!
The story focuses on two kingdoms, one ruled by King Lion, and the other by the Fat King. Basically, King Lion's people have no food, and when their request for help goes unnoticed, war is declared...
Advantages: Great animation, good story Disadvantages: Just feel it has gone too far
...For some reason my boys have turned into massive Star Wars fans, maybe something to do with their Dad being a massive fan and him showing them all of his figures (toys are I call them!) so inevitably they were really excited about watching the new film. Me and my hubby did watch this on our own first so we could watch it in peace with out all the ?look mom?, ?look Dad? and ?cool!? and then we all sat down again and watched it together. I have to say I was quite surprised by it.
The film starts with Anakin and Obi -Wan battling against a droid Army and Anakin receiving a shock in the form of a young girl who is to become his Padawan (the Girl he has to train in the art of the Jedi ). As the battle is going on back at the Jedi council Jabba the Hut has asked for assistance in finding his son who has been kidnapped. The Jedi think it...
Advantages: A great heart warming and emotional memoir of Pablo Mason Disadvantages: Maybe not for everybodys taste.
...This isn't my kind of book at all, but when my husband wrote a review on it for me to put on here, I thought I would give it quick going over so I could write the review properly. The book is certainly not the kind of book I would normally pick up and read, as you will know if you have read many of my other reviews of my chick lit books, and this book is much more for the male audience who enjoy reading about war and fighter jets. On saying that though the emotion is the book is heart warming, and the book can get quite sad at times!
Plot:
Pablo Mason is a Squadron Leader at the time of the first Gulf War from August 1990 to February 1991, when the world went to war with Iraq and Suddam Hussein, although everyone in the UK was against the war, they were quickly perusaded that the war was justified and that Suddam Hussein would be...
...The Simpsons - Classics - Bart Wars is a collection of four episodes from everyone's favourite yellow family, The Simpsons! The episodes included here are "Mayored to the Mob", "Dog of Death", "The Secret War of Lisa Simpson" and "Marge Not Be Proud".
"Mayored to the Mob" has Homer becoming Mayor Quimby's bodyguard after an impressive show of strength at a sci-fi convention. He soon has to fend off Fat Tony and his cronies. Packed with Star Wars references and featuring guest star Mark Hammill, this is a must see for any "Star Wars" enthusiast. Mark tells Homer to "use the forks" while appearing in a stage production of "Guys and Dolls", ad-libbing at one point about Chewbacca and Yoda. Also featuring a lot of funny moments between Homer and Quimby, they're almost like two peas on a pod really, they could both do each others jobs as...
Advantages: Fantastic gameplay and graphics Disadvantages: Limited weapons
...Gears of War (PC)
Having been released over a year ago for Xbox 360 users, Gears of War has finally been brought to the PC, which is fantastic news for PC gamers. I paid £17.90 from PlayTrade on www.play.com in January 2009, and you can now find it for £17.99 on that main Play website itself. Considering the RRP for this game and the price most high-street stores charge for this game is £34.99, play.com once again is the best place to buy games.
Gears of War is one of the best games to have hit the Xbox 360, and the same can now be said about the game on the PC. In terms of gameplay, it is the same as the Xbox version, and follows the same storyline, which in iteself is fantastic.
You are able to perform various manoeuvres such as crouching behind a wall, rolling, and hiding behind walls, which all enable you to combat...
