Reviews of war
Excellent War Classic
Review of Tora! Tora! Tora! (Wide Screen) by
Incognito
Advantages: Historically accurate, no bias, moving account
Disadvantages: None.
...Tora Tora Tora (Japanese for 'attack, attack, attack') and is the story of the Attack on Pearl Harbor. It is an unbiast, Anti- American even account, historiaclly correct, with a strong message. Unlike some war films, it is not 'US whups Japans ass' or 'Britain whups Hitlers ass', but more a moving account of the futility of war. Unusually for a war film, it has strong anti- war seams throughout, and is an excellent war film for doing so.
It stars Martin Balsam, Soh Yamamura and E G Marshall, all of whom fit their charachters perfectly. It is Yamamuras performance as the battle- weary Yamamoto which is most excellent. Yamamotos undersyanding of the futility of attacking the United States runs thourgh his performance, and we soon see he is correct.
The attack scenes are excellent for the day, and teh film is oen of my chocies...

Original war drama
Review of Glory (1989) by
JSpencer
Advantages: Very moving, powerful anti-war statement.
Disadvantages: none
...Glory must rank as one of the best war films of modern times. It is a fascinating true story of a black regiment in the American civil war and their heroic storming of a fort which cost practically all their lives. The director doesn't over dwell on the obvious racial tensions that existed but keeps it as merely part of the various dramas occuring, it is on the whole a hugely moving anti-war protest and the title is I presume meant to have an ironic sting. Denzil Washington is excellent as is the strangely, yet somehow correctly cast Matthew Broderick. The final scenes, partly in slow motion, sum up the brutality, and futility of war as much as any film....

Global Thermonuclear War
Review of War Games (1982) by
jonwhite
Advantages: easy to follow plot
Disadvantages: None I can think of
...Now this is a great Sunday afternoon family film toi sit down and watch. A story about a young boy who manages to hack into a secret government computer and accidentally trigger the beginings of a Global Thermonuclear War. Not an original concept for a film but a good solid dare I say believeable story. An anti war message film made during the cold war with Russia who are portrayed as the agressors but have nothing to do with the scenarios in the film.
Special effects are limited but the standard of acting is quite good. An enjoyable watch and a film I would be quite happy to sit down and watch again....

Factual Classic
Review of Saving Private Ryan DVD by
MByford
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: None
...Saving Private Ryan is an extremely good film that is very factual and informative about life during the war. Tom Hanks stars as a captain of a team who landed on the D day landings and are in search for a Private Ryan who has to be found and brought home after all of his brothers had been killed during previous battles in the war. This film is very in depth and detailed into life during the war for normal people who may have been presented with having to go into battle in the war.
This film contains all the triumphs, and obviously the tragic side of war and concentrates on life in the second world war. This film will make you feel very proud of the people who served for you during the war and the characters are superb in portraying the way they worked during the war. The second world war was truly a monumental moment of the 20th...

Great for the Star Wars people out there!
Review of Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer (DC) by
paul170184
Advantages: Star Wars eat ya heart out!
Disadvantages: None - unless you don't like Star Wars
...The simultaneous release of Star Wars Episode I on videotape and Star Wars Episode I:Racer for the Dreamcast was no coincidence; with Episode I merchandising for toys and other items fizzling and with Episode II still a ways off, LucasFilm and LucasArts were looking to give Episode I a much-needed shot in the arm. While the DC version of Racer is the best of the three current versions (the others were for PC and for N64), this version provides nothing new other than an online component for world rankings and game information, somewhat similar to Rayman 2; still, if you're a Star Wars fanatic or you're looking for a futuristic, fun, and flat out fast racing game, Star Wars Episode I: Racer for Dreamcast delivers in spades....

The Accidental Occupiers
Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres by
JeffSumm
Advantages: historically accurate, very funny, very sad
Disadvantages: none
...Before World War II the Greek island of Cephallonia had existed as a peaceful collection of fishing villages. On the island was a very respected doctor who had a beautiful, strong-willed daughter. She becomes engaged to a young man and everything seems to be working out towards a happy, peaceful life.
Then the war starts and the fiance goes off to fight for his king and country. The Italians come and occupy the island. They are a bumbling lot, mostly, and do not seem to want to be there. They delight in life and not in war, and the personification of this delight is Captain Corelli. He apologizes and fools his way through the war, and eventually charms the doctor's daughter. Perhaps when the war ends, they will live happily ever after.
Then the Germans come. They are ruthless and fight a war when a war is on. They destroy the Greek...

Into The North. . .
Review of Guild Wars - Eye Of The North (PC) by
thethunderboltguy
Advantages: great Graphics, easy to get into,
Disadvantages: can become impossible at times, can irritate you because you want to know more
...The first expansion pack from A-Net's Guild Wars Team, the Eye Of The North is a must have for owners of any of the three guild wars campaigns who plan to get the upcoming Guild Wars 2.
GW:EN takes you into a transition stage between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2, also acting as a medium for transporting valued items, such as minipets between the 2 games.
The first thing you notice about Eye of the North is the difference in game play, apart from the further improved graphics, there is a slight difference in the style of quests and missions as the expansion begins the transition of bringing the guild Wars franchise into a persistent world (ie. with no set towns or outposts). most players will greatly appreciate these changes as they make the game play different in some respects easier, and in others, harder, but the game play is still...

HOGS OF WAR
Review of Codemasters - Hogs of War by
JPARRY
Advantages: LOADS
Disadvantages: NONE
...Hogs of war is similar to that great game WORMS (and no I’m not being sarcastic, I really did like that game). The only real difference (if you cannot guess by the title), is that you are an army of pigs.
For those of you who are not acquainted with WORMS (where have you been!!) you are an army of pigs who have to destroy the enemy before they destroy you, using a series of weapons at your disposal.
This is an easy and at times, addictive game. Although if you already have WORMS, or WORMS II then this really not worth the £30.
Overall – Hogs of War really does bring in the bacon...

...Worthy continuation of worthy game. If you did not play in Settlers 2 that it is your mistake. The small people, build the small houses, being at war the small wars.
