...High Force and also Low Force Waterfalls are places I have visited many times over the years. Situated in Middleton-in-Teesdale, not far from both Raby or Barnard Castle, the waterfalls are a great place to visit for a day out, or as part of a drive through the stunning countryside in the area. High Force is without a doubt one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. The River Tees has been plunging into this gorge for thousands of years, but the rocks it reveals are even older, and date back over 300 million years! You will find High Force located along the B6277, 4 miles from Middleton-in -Teesdale. It is well signposted, just follow the brown tourist signs. Bullet the Blue Sky

Advantages: Comparatively easy, a fine viewpoint
Disadvantages: Not a place to seek solitude

Falling for Wales

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, great fun for the kids, lovely walks, magnificent falls.
Disadvantages: Not always doggy friendly. A bit steep to get to the first waterfall. No hook-ups

...~~ Nantcol Waterfalls ~~ We had a lovely week away camping in North Wales; it's what we call our Doggy holiday as we take the dogs to the seaside. This year we took Chloe our 4 year old Golden Retriever and we left Jessie the puppy with our daughter. At the beginning of the week I popped into information and picked up loads of tourist leaflets and the one for Nantcol Waterfalls caught my eye and it was Dog friendly, a bonus. The leaflet told me that the natural waterfalls are on privately owned farmland which has beautiful woodland and falls. The owners have created four different walks and opened the land to the public at a small charge. Not only do they have these walks, they also hire out holiday cottages and a static caravan and they allow camping on site too. Before I tell you about our experience here, I will tell you...

Advantages: A natural wonder worthy of the title

..., the whole rhyme smacks of being the product of a Victorian day trip around a bit of North Wales, which it most likely is. But with the Pistyll Rhaeadr, the author was onto something. What? Where? Formalities first: pronounce it 'Pist-ith rye-adder'. 'Pistyll' technically translates as the spout of a waterfall: 'Rhaeadr' means waterfall...such tautological japery is only to be expected in the land of Max Boyce and actresses who marry actors 400 years older than them. Let's say it's 'spring of the waterfall' in English for argument's sake. So, obviously it's a waterfall then. Falling a total of 240ft, the falls are (depending on definition, of which more later) the highest in England and Wales. Pistyll Rhaeadr is situated quite close to the Wales/England divide, on the border between the counties of Clwyd and Powys: as such...

Ingleton Waterfalls Walk

Advantages: Nice scenery, a gentle introduction to the outdoors
Disadvantages: Is having to walk a bit a disadvantage?

...I have a thing for waterfalls. Not quite as big as my thing for mountains, it must be said, but when it comes to the power and chaotic design of nature, they are one of the most gorgeous expressions. Nestling in the folds of the Yorkshire Dales is England's pre-eminent waterfalls walk (very easily found by the copious signposts off the A65 between Kirkby Lonsdale and Settle). There are other, (sometimes substantially) larger cataracts elsewhere (some, in fact, within reasonable driving distance of Ingleton), but nowhere with quite such an extensive collection. The walk covers 4.5 miles on clear paths, very well (and quite sensitively) maintained, with about 600ft of ascent (none of it particularly steep, and much of it stepped). Purists such as I might have the slight feeling that this is a bit of a Diet Coke Break excursion into...

As the latter reaches south-east, into the mountains, it becomes the bay of Loch Beag, into which debouches the considerable river of the Abhainn an Loch Bhig. This drains a dramatic glacial valley, and roaring down from its south-western lip over the cliffs of Leitir Dhubh is a prodigious plume of white water: the Eas a'Chual Aluinn (or Eas Coul Aulin, to give the slightly Anglicised version). At 660ft high this 'splendid waterfall of Coul' is comfortably the tallest in the British Isles. Opinions differ as to how the falls were formed.
