PS Waverley & MV Balmoral
Review of PS Waverley by  Gavita

Advantages: See the Beauty of The Coast
Disadvantages: None unless your sea sick

...The two historic vessels operated by Waverley Excursions head office in Glasgow are two of only a few remaining coastal excursion vessels within the UK. The ships themselves can carry around 800 passengers (Waverley is liscenced to carry more) to various destinations and cruises around the British coastline. Recently supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the PS Waverley (last sea going paddle steamer in the world! )has been restored to her beauty, whilest the MV balmoral has began phase one of her regeneration programme. One board both vessels, aft on the main deck there are self service restaurants with a wide variety of snacks, tea, coffee light refreshments and hot meals. Again on both ships the main bar is located forward. Plastic glasses are available if you wish to take your drinks up on deck to better enjoy the scenery... Read review

SAY HELLO, WAVERLEY GOODBYE
Review of Aquarius Waverley House Hotel, London by  LostWitness

Advantages: Central location, fair rates, decent food
Disadvantages: Room decor, basic facilities

...Finding a good hotel in London is not an easy task. You can, of course, easily find a decent hotel if you are a lottery millionaire, but for the rest of us, it can be a real struggle to find anything more than a fleapit for less than a hundred pounds. The budget hotel chains have not really made any in roads into the London accommodation scene, with only a sprinkling of Travel Inns here and there. The worst part about the Travel Inns in London is that they now charge around £80 per night, for what is a very basic level of accommodation. Fortunately, there are much better deals to be had out there, without spending millions, and being the good corporate citizen that I am, I have made it my quest to seek them out and appraise them for your information. ABOUT THE WAVERLEY HOUSE HOTEL The Aquarius Waverley House occupies a prime site... Read review

Going Native Sixty Years Hence
Review of Waverley - Walter Scott by  tyger

Advantages: Great Classic Historical Fiction
Disadvantages: My copy had very small print

...This enjoyable classic is entertaining as well as educational. Is is very easy to be carried away to another time if you have the time to lose yourself in this masterpiece of historical fiction. Plot: ********* (You've been warned, it's a long one! But this is an epic after all....) Young Edward Waverley is a dreamer and a romantic who is ready for an adventure but he has no idea what's in store for him when this novel begins. His upbringing has been shared between his Whig father and his Tory uncle who can't stand each other's politics but are united in wanting to do their best for the Waverley heir. His education has been a bit neglected and he has spent too much time on novels and poetry when he should have been working on his classics. Edward is a member of the English gentry with a nice estate to inherit and no particular... Read review

Be a Time Traveller!
Review of PS Waverley by  thecatsmother

Advantages: a wonderful journey into the past, brilliant scenery
Disadvantages: sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate!

...It's not often nowadays you get the chance to have a day out on a means of transport that has real soul. If you like steam trains and vintage cars, you will probably love the paddle steamer Waverley. Stepping aboard PS Waverley is setting foot in another era, where the pace of life was gentle and elegance was paramount. THE HISTORY Waverley is a deceptive old girl, because she's not quite as old as most people think when they first meet her. She was built on the Clyde by A&J Inglis in 1947. In those days, a fleet of paddle steamers plied their trade up and down the Clyde estuary, taking Glaswegian holidaymakers to the Clyde resorts like Dunoon, Rothesay, and Largs. In local parlance these people were going "doon the watter", and there was such fierce competition among the rival ships that there were many near collisions... Read review

Getting High in Edinburgh
Review of Edinburgh Airport (EDI) by  proxam

Advantages: Convenient location...for me
Disadvantages: Lack of destinations

...terminal building, two main runways and a large cargo operation. • HOW TO GET THERE • Edinburgh Airport lies on the western fringe of Scotland's capital, about 7 miles from the city centre, and within a mile of the Newbridge junction where the M8 to Glasgow and the M9 to Stirling and the Forth Road Bridge meet with the A8 trunk road. * By Road -- From Edinburgh take the A8 past the Gyle roundabout and follow signs to the airport. From Glasgow take the M8 to Junction 2, then take the M9 north to Junction 1 (the Newbridge roundabout), then follow the A8. Short and long term car parks are available and there are numerous car hire options in the terminal. * By Rail -- The nearest railway station is Edinburgh Waverley and trains run to and from Waverley to the rest of the UK. Buses run from Waverley Bridge (next to the train... Read review

Getting around Edinburgh - an update
Review of Getting around in Edinburgh by  khib70

Advantages: Plenty to see, cheap public transport, walkable
Disadvantages: traffic congestion, hills, weather

...at off peak times, and 30 mins to 1 hour during the night. As of April 2008, there is a flat single fare of £1:10 for adults, and 60p for children. An all day unlimited travel ticket costs £2:50 and is highly recommended. Buy one from the driver of the first bus you get on. Be warned, they don't give change! There are red ticket machines situated at most bus stops in the city centre. Single trip tickets can be bought from them for £1, and day tickets are also available. Like the buses, though, they don't give change. A weekly ticket costs £13, and can be bought from one of Lothian's travelshops (there's one on Waverley Bridge, just outside the railway station and one on Hanover Street, just off Princes Street.) These can also provide printed timetables and other valuable information. Most bus stops have printed timetables... Read review

Buffet Time
Review of Jimmy Chung's by  matty168

Advantages: Consistent, Good Prices
Disadvantages: Very Rushed atmosphere

...Jimmy Chungs is a well known Oriental Buffet Restaurant which have a restaurant in 5 out of the 6 Cities of Scotland. Those are Aberdeen,Dundee,Glasgow,Stirling and Inverness. There are two branches in Edinburgh City Centre, one is on Waverley Bridge and the other is in Grindlay Street. My review is based on the Waverley Bridge branch which is the first restaurant you come to once you leave Waverley Station so therefore it is probably to no surprise that is is always busy. Prices vary between £5.49 for lunch on Monday-Fridays and over £10 for Fridays and Saturdays evenings. when you come into the restaurant, a waiter or waitress will ask you how many people and then they will show you to your table and they will then immediately ask you what you'd like to drink which seems absolutely daft considering you have only just sat down... Embra the best place to be
Review of Edinburgh in general by  Squidget

Advantages: Loads to see and do
Disadvantages: Can be very cold

...Edinburgh is also known as Embra, Auld Reekie and loads of other things to name a few. Auld Reekie comes from the days of steam trains and coal chimneys, what happened was the buildings in the main town centre near the Waverley Train Station went black due to the steam and smoke, the buildings have all been cleaned in recent years and are back to the glorious original selves. Glasgow has tried to claim that it should be the capital of Scotland for a few years now, but Edinburgh is 'Miles Better' an old Glaswegian slogan. Princes Street: Princes Street itself has the glorious Scott Monument and the magnificent Edinburgh Castle in the backdrop a picture perfect postcard whatever time of day or night it is, no matter what season of the year it is! Although I must admit this year is the first year I have seen it covered in snow... Read review

RADISSON SAS EDINBURGH (Not Crowne Plaza)
Review of Crowne Plaza, Edinburgh by  newty1977

Advantages: Location, Location, Location!
Disadvantages: Can be expensive due to popularity

...away. Train - Very convenient for Edinburgh's mainline train station, Waverley Station - On leaving the station, turn right at the top of Waverley steps, take the next right on to North Bridge, and the hotel is just to the left at the traffic lights. Bus - All services arrive into St Andrews Bus Station, which is only 5 minutes from the hotel. Air - The farthest transfer on arrival into Edinburgh - Edinburgh Airport is 11.5km to the west of the city. An airport bus arrives at Waverley Bridge and the Hotel is only 2 minutes away. A taxi from the airport to the hotel will cost £15.00 - £20.00 Car - The method 3 mates and I used to travel from Derby to Edinburgh on a Friday night 3 weeks ago - 5-hour journey!! We were well ready for a drink when we got up there … more on that later! The main roads into the city centre couldn... Read review

Luxury is Paramount
Review of Marine Hotel, Troon by  SusanLesley

Advantages: Hotels with good service, good food and luxury!
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, but worth it!

...Edinburgh from the Royal Mile to Princes Street. It has 189 en suite bedrooms all with air conditioning and a leisure club complete with a crèche. You can have a meal in the Bridge Restaurant or enjoy a drink and light snack in the Bridge Bar. The Old Waverley Hotel, Edinburgh ------------------------------------------- This hotel is one of the landmark buildings in the centre of Edinburgh. It overlooks Princes Street Gardens and, like The Carlton, is just 7 miles from Edinburgh Airport, and 5 minutes walk from Waverley Railway Station. It has 66 en suite bedrooms and guests are invited to use the leisure facilities at the nearby Carlton Hotel, as described above. Meals are served in the Cranston’s Restaurant or the Waverley Lounge, both of which have lovely views over Princes Street Gardens. The Stirling Highland Hotel... Read review
