Subterranian fun in Austria

Advantages: Interesting, educational and fun
Disadvantages: 9 degrees and damp

...a blanket to wrap around your shoulders and keep the chill out. Austria and in particular Vienna, is a wonderful destination for any holiday maker, the Seegrotte was only one of the many sights we managed to take in on our week away, the people are very friendly, the scenery is amazing and Vienna in particular is just brilliant, we loved it so much we are already planning a return!...

Seefeld ( Austria )

Advantages: This is a very beautiful place to be. There are flowers on every balcony which makes it look like a fairy land
Disadvantages: I found none when I was there except if you like to cycle they do it differently

...I was there when I was young, I went on a bus tour and we stopped off in Germany for the night, in the morning after breakfast, the cases got loaded into the buses, unfortunatly mine went on its merry way to Switzerland andIand I was left for four days with only the clothes I had on 'till we arrived in in Austria . Seefeld is beautiful with every house and hotel with flowers on the It is so clean and you look up to the mountains and see the snow lying, yet it is not cold. I went up in the cable car to the top and stood looking down at the wooden chalets with flower laden balconys We went to the house where the "sound of music" was played. There was entertainment in the Hotel next door where the men danced typical tyroleon dances, with leather shorts and caps. and as my clothes had not arrived from Switzerland a very nice...

The top place for Culture and Classical Music

Advantages: Class, culture and music
Disadvantages: Could be quite expensive

...This is part of my travel diary on a tour from Contiki. Berlin/Prague/Vienna tour Day 7 By late afternoon/early evening, we arrived in Vienna, capital of Austria and classical music. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Austria? Sound of Music, Viennesse Waltz, Viennesse biscuit or Arnold Schwarzenegger? Well for me it?is definitely Music!! Austria is one of the most cultured countries in Europe and Vienna being its capital is also the capital for classical music. Threfore, there is no surprise that many well-known composers or musicians and some examples are Mozart, Johann Strauss, Hadyn and Schubert. Vienna is all about classical music and beauty with a amazing collection of buildings and architecture. The city lies in the Danube Valley and has been inhibited for thousands of years...

Review of Vienna (Austria)

Not just for shopping!

Advantages: People wear traditional dress, lots to see and do, very pretty
Disadvantages: Steep cobbled streets, smoking allowed in public places

...For the benefit of anyone who still doesn't know, my partner and I bought a little flat in Maribor in Slovenia at the end of last year. Over our last few visits we have been furnishing the flat and given the abundance of retail parks in the area you might be forgiven for thinking that this would be easy. The trouble is that although there are lots of retail parks in Slovenia they all have the same limited stores and so people tend to head over the border to shop. Depending on where they live, this might be to Italy (very stylish and very pricey), Hungary (cheap but not so stylish), Croatia (so-so, good quality but not much choice) or Austria (reasonable prices, good quality and lots of choice). People in Maribor tend to go to Austria and head for Graz, just fifty or so kilometres away. There's even a song that goes something like...

Review of Graz (Austria)

Often foolishly overlooked

Advantages: Small yet lively, a variety of things to do and a great place to be based
Disadvantages: none

...Graz is Austria?s second city, with around 260,000 population, as well as 100,000 students which boost the population in term time. For a second city, that is not exactly massive, but nevertheless Graz has a certain je ne sais quoi. Having lived in Vienna for four and a half years, I have often headed down to Graz and have friends there, to revisit the city I first discovered in 1997-8 when I lived in Judenburg. Getting there: Graz is 2:30 direct by train (fahrplan.oebb.at has an online timetable) from Vienna (leaving from the Südbahnhof), with hourly trains, although every second hour you have to change in Brück an der Mur. The journey itself, over the Semmering pass, in particular the stretch between Semmering and Gloggnitz is well worth it. Unfortunately, when the Semmering tunnel is completed, some of this breathtaking journey...

From the Slopes to the Springs?Bad Kleinkirchheim

Advantages: The Best-Kept Secret In The Alps...!
Disadvantages: None!

...here, it is part of a much broader experience. It is precisely this that makes skiing in Austria such a pleasure, and in my opinion, Bad Kleinkircheim is one resort that exemplifies all that is wonderful about Austrian skiing. LOCATED in the midst of the Carinthian Alps near Austria's southern border, the thermal baths at Bad Kleinkirchheim have a long history, even pre-dating roman times. Indeed, the earliest traces of human settlement in this part of Carinthia date from the Neolithic period (3500-1800BC). A Roman road (known locally as the "Römerweg") runs through the area. This is an ancient track cut deep into the rock and is one of the most important of the old routes leading from Italy into the eastern Alpine region. Whilst other thermal spas in Austria, such as that at Bad Ischgl, began to attract tourists as early as the 16th...

The Stunning City Of Salzburg

Advantages: beautiful scenery, superb transport system, lots of things to see
Disadvantages: restaurants close quite early, not much veggie food

...My boyfriend Jamie and I have just got back from a 5 day trip to Salzburg in Austria. I bought Jamie the trip to Austria as a present for his last birthday. Here I am reviewing the city of Salzburg. Getting there I booked my flights with Ryanair through the website which I found fairly easy to use. Baring in mind I actually booked the tickets in July 2006 so that prices may have changed since then, but I paid £87.02 for both of us for return flight which I thought was very reasonable. We flew from London Stansted and the flight took an hour and forty minutes. Accommodation We stayed at Hotel Plainbrucke which is located about 15 minute drive from the airport and a ten minute bus journey from the main town. When I was looking to book a hotel online there were lots to choose from so I can't see anyone having a problem trying...

The Heart of Europe

Advantages: spectacular scenery, history and culture, great people, good food
Disadvantages: crowded in July and August, in winter during X-mas

...Everybody has heard of the pop-stars Falco and DJ Ötzi, the great composers Mozart and Haydn, has seen the film on the Trapp family, "The Sound of Music", has seen the great mountainside when skiing in winter or hiking in summer, everybody has his clichés on this small country in the heart of Europe… Yes, I do know, that there was this governor of the province of Carinthia by the name of J. Haider, whose racist comments have found their way into all of Europes principal media. But his fame was declining fast and the party which he used to lead has proven that they can do without him when looking back at almost two years of successful political work in a coalition with the conservatives. So, what else is there about Austria: well, lots of history and I mean it. The Hapsburgs have ruled it for six centuries and influenced...

Vienna All Style and Grace

Advantages: Style and Grace
Disadvantages: None really

...Vienna - the capital of Austria and the home of the Habsberg empire - was not my first choice as a holiday destination. In fact we got there a little by mistake. We wanted to go to Venice but my dyslexia got the better of the travel agent and we wound up there. We were so glad. It truly is a magnificent city. Vienna was the headquarters of Europes longest lasting Empire. The Habsbergs ruled over the Hungarian Austrian empire for 600 years and finally lost Austria to the republicans early in the 20th century. Why am I telling you this, well the Habsbergs admired beauty, music and architecture and that is what Virnna is all about. The first thing that strikes you is the architecture. Vienna is the home of Baroque and Rococco styles of building and was largely spared (or restored after)by countless wars over the centuries and walking...

The Perfect Weekend Break

Advantages: A very nice place with friendly people
Disadvantages: You have to come home again

...I visited Vienna in March 2001 and have to say this was one of my most favourite places I have visited on a short City break. We flew with Buzz from Stansted that took about 1 hour 40 minutes flying time. The Airport is connected well to the City Centre with a twice-hourly service that takes about 20 minutes. We stayed in The Renaissance Penta hotel that I will recommend and Ive written a separate opinion on this lovely hotel. Vienna, which is the capital of Austria, is such a beautiful place, with its excellent breath taking architecture, which you can find, throughout the city. I find Vienna like an updated similar version of Prague, except that Vienna is a lot more expensive. Vienna is a city that I did feel threaten to be in. The people are friendly, the streets are clean and to be honest I had a totally stress free holiday...
