Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Disadvantages: Cheap, nasty, uninspiring movie. Only buy this if you want a cheap alternative to sleeping pills!

...~ ~ I enjoyed actor Wesley Snipes in the "Blade" series of movies, where he plays the part of a vampire hunter. The movies are stylish and action-packed, and "Blade" is probably the best role he has so far taken on in his acting career. This was the main reason that I picked up this DVD, "The Marksman", while browsing through the "Buy two previously viewed DVD's for ?15" section of my local video shop. A picture of the aforementioned Mr. Snipes in full combat gear on the cover, and a promising plot line about Chechen rebels attempting to cause an ecological disaster at a nuclear power station in Russia on the back cover. Couldn't be too bad, I thought. At least it will entertain me for a couple of hours. And at ?7.50 it was hardly going to dent the old bankroll. Bad mistake! ...Last week, I flew to Canada with my family for a break. Why I decided to watch Passenger 57 a few nights before, then, I'll never know. Probably not the best film to watch if you're about to fly! The film focuses on John Cutter (Wesley Snipes), a former International Airport Security Manager, who is coerced into coming back into the business by Tom Sizemore, now a bigwig in the antiterrorism business. Cutter finds himself on a plane when the FBI decide a last minute transfer for plane hijacker Charles Rayne (Bruce Payne). When Payne's goons end up taking over the plane mid-air, it's left to Cutter to save the day. It's a familiar storyline, or at least it was before the events of 9/11. ...Drop Zone is a harmless 1994 action film starring Wesley Snipes and Gary Busey. Snipes had a run of films in the 1990s that featured some high octane chases and extreme situations. Here, in Drop Zone, we see the art of skydiving from a competition aspect and also how it can be used for more sinister causes. Snipes plays Pete Nessip, a US Marshall who loses his brother and the computer geek they were escorting to federal prison following an attempt on his life. Mourning the death of his brother, and determined to catch his killer and rescue the computer geek Leedy (Michael Jeter), Nessip infiltrates a group of skydivers to get closer to the villains, led by Ty Moncrief (Gary Busey). ...Quite possibly the best vampire film ever????? This will put your faith your faith back in the "vampire" genre. Blade is literally the best vampire movie ever made. Rising from the ashes of the little known Marvel comic, its tells story of the "daywalker", a vampire who has no fear of sunlight (played superbly by Wesley Snipes). His mother bitten whilst pregnant with Blade, she dies giving birth to him, leaving Blade to live in an eternity of hell, stalking the world in pursuit of other vampires to end their existence. ...a refreshing change from the normal blend of rock music used in these types of film. The special effects are extremely competent - vampires despatched in the abattoir nightclub fight sequences dissolve into an ethereal green mist, as their physical bodies are decapitated, sliced in half and generally eviscerated. A fight sequence alongside a speeding subway train is frighteningly tense. The climax of the film portrays twelve vampire spirits bursting from their human hosts in a spectacular sequence. Visually, the film is stunning, and probably requires at least two or three viewings to fully appreciate some of the fastest sequences. Wesley Snipes provides an uncanny resemblance to the comic book original, and puts in a suitably unemotional performance as the half human vampire hunter. Stephen Dorff is suitably unpleasant as the vampire overlord...

Happy Sniping!

Advantages: Bullet cam, awesome sniper rifles, very realistic
Disadvantages: A touch too long given that the missions are all a bit similar

...and when you hear one of them talk (meaning the same couple of lines over and over again) just rush out and hose them down with a machine gun. Sniper Elite is far from the perfect game, but its enjoyable none the less and with it having a number of different difficulty modes (cadet, marskman, sniper elit etc) its something that you can restart over and over again to your hearts desire.
