Far-East meets Mid-West
Advantages: Delicious Thai cuisine and traditional village pub all rolled into one
Disadvantages: Portions rather on the small side. Quite expensive.
...The Nava Thai restaurant is somewhere I've been dining at regularly for over 15 years now, and I can honesty say I've never had a bad meal there. If you're a fan of Thai cuisine, you've come to the right place, as they really do serve a rather splendid lunch or dinner.
The set up is a little odd, as the Nava Thai restaurant is actually situated within the public house of a very small village called Stedham, about two miles out of Midhurst in West Sussex. The pub, called The Hamilton Arms, is tucked away from the main roads, down a quiet country lane, and it's certainly not somewhere you'd come across by chance - you really need to have heard about it, and make a special trip there. Word of mouth has certainly done its work, as despite being so tucked away, it's a very popular pub, and the restaurant within it does a roaring trade...

A Georgian Gem
Advantages: Cathedral town/city with many historical attractions and good shops
Disadvantages: Difficult to park. Prices are on the high side.
...Having lived and worked in Chichester (or nearby) for the last 20 odd years, I think I now know the place well enough to write a half decent review on it's main sights and attractions. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Chichester is a town situated in West Sussex on the south coast of England. It's an elegant and historic town with some lovely examples of Georgian architecture and there's plenty to see and do. The main landmark is Chichester Cathedral (more on that later), which is over 1,000 years old and whose spire can be seen from many miles away.
I'd describe Chichester as a rather elegant town, but you do need to know the place fairly well in order to find all its hidden treasures. Chichester doesn't give up its secrets easily - it's full of surprises, but they're pretty well concealed and mostly unflaunted. You...

Midhurst - West Sussex - The Essentials
Advantages: Central location in the new South Downs National Park. Top hotels, good B&B's.
Disadvantages: Nothing to do on wet days. Limited number of good shops..
.... But first do your homework by exploring the section on Midhurst Pages. Cabbage White was Maison Jules - hairdressers where the bank heist was plotted. Nest door Burgage House was the Southern Bank.(2006). The Swan Inn became the main film set for 2009, and Church Cottage for scenes in both 2006 and 2009.
6. Tudor Midhurst - an Outdoor Learning Experience.
A lot of fun both with and without a camera may be had studying Tudor buildings including the Tudor Castle of Cowdray aka Cowdray House. Consult Midhurst Pages for details. Cowdray Castle is very popular with schools and parties are catered for out of season or on days when it is not open to the public.
A new website www.tudorhouses.org is to be launched in early 2010. This will focus on the Tudor old town and Cowdray. It will also include material from elsewhere in West Sussex.

One Fyne Day
Advantages: Well presented selection of fish and seafood. Terraced outside dining area. Location and views.
Disadvantages: A rather noisy venue. Expensive if you want any "extras".
...A reservation is recommended as this is a very busy restaurant. When we dined there on a Thursday evening, the restaurant was at least 90% full. The clientele seemed to be mostly made up of silver foxes (a nice way of describing affluent OAP?s!), all tucking into huge lobsters or crabs. Perhaps the credit crunch hasn?t yet hit Midhurst and their hedge funds and/or index linked pensions are all still virtually intact...

The jewel of the South Downs
Advantages: Historical town with many attractions nestling in the midst of the South Downs.
Disadvantages: Over run with tourists in the summer. Half the major attractions shut in winter.
...Arundel (pronounced ARR-n-dl (arrow), not AIR) is a small town situated in the heart of the rolling South Downs in West Sussex. If you're ever in that part of world, it's well worth spending at least half a day there, if not longer. It's a very pretty and historical town, which is dominated by the twin edifices of the Norman castle and the Gothic cathedral at the top of the hill, and the River Arun running along the bottom. The skyline does make a particularly dramatic vista if you approach it from the bottom of the hill near the river.
My association with the town probably starts from well before I can remember. My grandfather and grandmother actually lived at Arundel Castle for many, many years, and my brother and I spent many a Sunday afternoon exploring the grounds, as well as the castle. My mum and dad were married there...

Time and tide wait for no man
Advantages: Unspoilt and charming shore side village - historical sights
Disadvantages: Over run with tourists in the summer - car parking problems
...I'd like you to join me in a walk around Bosham. It won't take long and it's not very far (less than a mile), as it's only a tiny little village. We'll just do the main sights and then you can get going on your way. Bosham is a tiny fishing and sailing village near to Chichester in West Sussex. You may well have seen it in paintings or postcards, as it is always full of artists producing their version of the Saxon church tower rising up behind the waterfront and sea shore houses.
~~~ WHERE ARE WE ~~~
Bosham (pronounced Bozzum) is situated within one of the creeks of Chichester Harbour. There's no beach, so it's not ideal for swimming (unless you're a dog). Despite this, Bosham is always full of tourists, particularly in the summer, drawn by its quaint charm. The village retains its sense of history and is largely unspoilt...
HALLOWEEN Fun at A-maze-ing Tulleys.
Advantages: Great for kids and adults all year round
Disadvantages: Can be very scary at Halloween, espeically in the dark
...Tulleys Farm is a really great place in West Sussex that caters for every season exceptionally well. It's such a great day out for kids and adults alike that we have been back a few times now at different times of the year to experience the different set ups they do.
Tulleys Farm is basically a huge area that farms crops such as strawberries and other berry fruits and also squash, pumpkin and sunflowers at specific times of the year all of which you pick yourself. There is also a farm shop, which sells produce and tearooms to relax and rest after your PYO experience. Two minutes drive up the road brings you to their second area, which is the fun part and is where we usually spend most of our days. Entering the place from the road you are greeted with a massive parking area, easily enough for 300 cars with more space whenever needed...
Frankie & Benny's take all the major credit cards plus personal cheques with banker's card. Suitable for all ages. The chain seems to be mainly built all on one level so good access for the infirm and disabled. The Wilder West
Advantages: Unspoiled wilderness, fascinating sights and sites
Disadvantages: Persistent rainfall, persistent sandflies
...Having crossed the Southern Alps and reached the coast at Greymouth, you may be tempted to head south straight away. This is, after all, the direction in which the highest mountains, the deepest rainforest and the remotest tracts of wilderness are to be found. And if you haven't come to see mountains, forest and wilderness, you've come to the wrong place.
Resist the temptation. First, cross the Grey River and take a small diversion up the coast to the north, just an hour's drive to the Paparoa National Park. You will thereby ensure that your first taste of the west coast is not the relatively drab and developed stretch immediately south of Greymouth (only relatively, since nothing along this coast is drab or developed by European standards). North of the Grey River the country is hardly touched, and the drive takes you round...
A sparkling gem from West Sussex
Advantages: Luxurious, complex, novelty factor (English)
Disadvantages: Only seen at Waitrose and independent sellers
...with an English fizz you can source a bottle of Nyetimber from Waitrose supermarkets (beware demand for it is high due to reputation).
This ?Dom Perignon? of English wines originates from Nyetimber Vineyards in deepest West Sussex. It is made from a blend of the same grapes as regular Champagne (The red grapes, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white grape Chardonnay) and is made with the Champagne method i.e. ?Traditional Method? which is stated on the label. Nyetimber?s grape content and use of the ?Traditional Method? is responsible for the wine tasting very similar to Champagne. Briefly the ?Traditional Method? involves taking a blend of fermented still base wine and bottling and sealing it with some yeast and sugar. The yeast consumes the sugar and induces a secondary fermentation in the sealed bottle. This releases carbon dioxide which is...
