A nice country park in West Yorkshire
Advantages: Free access, good quality footpaths, an old mill and boathouse
Disadvantages: Messy paths after rainfall
...Newmillerdam Country Park lies adjacent to the main A61 Barnsley to Wakefield road in West Yorkshire. I have driven past here many times and I have always made a mental note to pay it a visit but it was only very recently that I finally got the chance to stop and have a look around.
The country park is located approximately 5 kilometres south of Wakefield and covers an area of 237 acres. It consists of mixed broadleaf woodland centred around a large lake. When I visited here in early November the trees were lovely shades of golden brown. There is a large car park (pay and display) and a footpath goes all of the way around the lake. There are smaller footpaths that extend into the woodland and these are all popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
The earliest reference to this area date back 1285 when the area was known...

Pontefract Castle, West Yorkshire
Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Mainly ruins
...Pontefract Castle lies high above the West Yorkshire Town of Pontefract. Today it is a popular tourist attraction in the area and it is a place that I recently visited with my Brother, who lives nearby.
There is not a great deal that remains of this Castle above ground but what sets this place apart from many other similar places that I have visited are its underground tunnels and its incredibly well preserved central Tower, known as the Keep, which once formed the main central structure of the Castle.
It is completely free to visit Pontefract Castle and you can also visit the maze of underground tunnels which have been carved out of the rocks. This was a truly fascinating experience, wandering around the narrow tunnels and seeing the names of Civil War Prisoners that had been carved into the solid rock walls.
This Castle was...

A House of Lancaster castle in Yorkshire
Advantages: Free admission. Full of historical information.
Disadvantages: Scant remains. Poor visitor centre.
...-sided A4 information leaflet, available from the castle visitor centre or Pontefract museum, which enables visitors to guide themselves around the castle, provides a potted history of the castle and its past inhabitants.
Just to explain the title of this review: Pontefract castle is located in Pontefract in West Yorkshire but is owned by the Queen in her rights of the Duchy of Lancaster!! Therefore a permanent Red Rose presence in a land of white, but more of this later in the review.
~~~Getting to the Castle~~~
Free parking is available to the south east of the castle including spaces for disabled. There is a short but steep walk upwards to the castle accessible through one gate only. It is wheelchair accessible but this would be difficult. The walk upwards from the car park is alongside the outer bailey wall of the castle (some 100...
Ahhh! Yorkshire
Advantages: Can use just one. Authentic taste
Disadvantages: Not really big enough for my liking and not the same as home-made!
...Having a fussy eater as a son means that I've become a little more "experimental" in the food that's available in the house. In desperation I've tried products that I wouldn't have dreamed of buying before having children. Sometimes this is just to offer variety, other times it's for convenience.
Yorkshire puds have to be one of the easiest things to make. There's nothing fancy in the batter and, when you're cooking a roast it's no hassle to slip a tray in the top oven. However, upon discovering that my son actually liked these and having had little success in freezing home-made pies I decided to try some of the ready-made versions so that, when offering my son a roast mid-week (made from a roast that my husband and I have most likely shared the night before) I can also offer a pud alongside.
The Forbidden Corner; Disneyland, Yorkshire
Advantages: Lots of fun and adventure
Disadvantages: could be in trouble if you have a week bladder
...***Please note my review is of a specific attraction "The Forbidden Corner" in North Yorkshire and not a review on Yorkshire as a whole. I have posted the review here for now as there seems to be a hitch with the product listing***
I was first made aware of The Forbidden Corner after my brother and his girlfriend returned following a visit one day this summer. They seemed incredibly mesmerised by the place, however, upon probing them for a detailed explanation of exactly what The Forbidden Corner was I was delivered only excited remarks about clues & riddles, secret passages and sleeping giants. The word enchanting was overused to an unnatural extent in their accounts, and after both failing miserably to provide me with a concrete answer they just suggested it was probably best if I visit the place for myself.
West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds
Advantages: bright and airy inside, very good view of stage from seats, good shows, friendly staff
Disadvantages: not right in the centre of town -across a very busy main road, lots of bushes for muggers to hide bahind at night , expensive bar
...We went to West Yorkshire Playhouse yesterday afternoon to see a matinee performance of Bad Girls, the Musical. We had a fantastic time. The play was absolutely first class- so if you get chance to go and you know anything at all about bad girls, you will be in heaven!
I had ordered my tickets via an online ticket provider and they came within a couple of days-just what I had ordered and no fuss at all. We got two of the best seats in the house for 15 pounds each.
The good thing about the WY playhouse is that the prices are very good for excellent productions, compared to London theatres, anyway!
It's a bit tricky to get to, so you need your wits about you- see the directions to follow...
Culture in Yorkshire
Advantages: Good exhibits, easy to get to
Disadvantages: None
...When we went to visit friends in Yorkshire in the summer we stopped of at the Yorkshire sculpture park. We have meant to visit before, but somehow never have.
This park was founded 1977 at, West Bretton, Wakefield. Originally a large house on a parkland of some 500 acres This Park is very easy to get to as it is only one mile from junction 38 of the M1. There was quite a lot of parking which costs £2.00 entrance to the park itself is free.
We got there after taking 5 hours to get there from near Lupton it usually takes about 3, So were tired and in need of a cup of tea so we went into the café / restaurant.
The tea was good about the same price you pay anywhere and there was a terrific view over the parkland with the hills as a backdrop .The restaurant was on the first floor and there was an outside balcony you could sit on if...
A nice Yorkshire beach
Advantages: Good quality bathing
Disadvantages: No facilities on beach
...Filey Beach stretches for 10 kilometres and sits within a natural bay on the rugged east cost of Yorkshire. To the north of the beach lie steep sandstone cliffs whilst to the south there are sheer limestone cliffs. These white limestone cliffs extend south to Flamborough Head and onto Bempton Cliffs, the highest sea cliffs in England. During the summer months these cliffs are home to many thousands of breeding seabirds; predominantly guillemots, razorbills, puffins, kittiwakes and fulmars.
Filey is an ancient fishing village that grew up around the bay. It has a rich history with the sea and everywhere you look there are references to it. At the side of the jetty there is a RNLI lifeboat station that has saved dozens of lives over the years. Whilst at the side of this there are a few café's and gift shops but it is a lot smaller...
