...I took my partner to stay at the Westbury Mayfair as an anniversary treat, when we arrived the doorman took our car from us and parked it in the hotels secure car park (£30 a night, in addition to the £200+ a night room fee). The check in was quick and painless, then up to our "superior queen", or "standard room" in plain english, the room was nice, if a little small. There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, these were offered at an additional (undisclosed) charge. The room was however very clean, and serviced twice daily, with the Molton Brown toiletries replenished on both occassions. The choice of T.V channels was very limited, so with this and the fact that we had no access to tea and coffee in our room we spent very little time in the rather expensive room. ...I and a few friends stayed at the Westbury in recent weeks, and I must say I very much enjoyed the stay and the hospitality. The Hospitality was partly down to the fact that the Irish are a great bunch of people, despite mishaps over the centuries with the English. You enter the Westbury, and your immediatly greeted by a well dressed conceierge who will kindly take your bags and help you check into the hotel. The plush interior shines with money and old school class. They haven't opted for Uber Trendy designs that so many hotels are opting for these days, there is still a slight tradition going on here. Cardiff To Portsmouth Harbour Line

Advantages: Cheaper than a car (when you have a rail card - no need to pay over the bridge to wales)
Disadvantages: No real late running of trains (last trains about 11:30pm)

...One of the main routes i find useful is the Portsmouth Hardbour to Cardiff (okay, it ends in Swansea but i've never been that far). I live just outside bath, and often have to catch connections to London, Plymouth, Cardiff, and to the North of England. The best thing about the line is that the Bristol and Westbury stations are the main connection stations for all these places. Give yourself at least a 5 minute gap (preferably 10 mins) between trains if you are changing at Bristol. Saying that, how often do the trains run on time anyway? More than likely your first train will be late, and your second one will have gone by the time you get there. That has happened to me once or twice, but it is not normally more than an hours wait until the next train comes along. Not good if you are going to a meeting, but not so bad if you...

On the outward journey the first train broke down, although they did get a replacement relatively quickly i did end up missing my connection at westbury, and because they recently cut the number of trains going through westbury i had to wait over an hour for another train. By the time i eventually made it to Plymouth i was 2 hours late. Now I wasn't all that bitter about this, its one of those things that happens every now and again so i forgot about it, however i did make sure i gave myself a nice big 40 minute gap at Westbury on my return journey, ensuring i couldn't miss it. So on the return journey i got on my train at Plymouth, which did not have any working air conditioning (this day just happened to be about 34oC), in order to fix this problem they stopped for nearly an hour at Exeter station, meaning i somehow actually missed my...
